Catastrophic? Not! Listen to the audience, they liked it. Dean and Jerry were very funny.

@5.58 the street sign says ‘Martin & Lewis Street’ I wonder if that street is still called that all these years after their heyday, or if it has now been changed to something else?

You can see that Jerry was alone on the submarine ; Jerry said in his book "Dean and Me " that Dean stayed away from the sub, he said, "you can see the problem ", and I don't blame him. Dean's kinda claustrophobic, like I am.

Jerry was offended that Bing fled from the stage & never returned. He & Crosby never spoke to one another ever again.

kathleen bohannon I can see where you would maybe think that from this clip but the narrator doesn’t tell the full story. Apparently, after seeing how Jerry jumped all over Bob, Bing was afraid that he would do the same thing to him, and pull his toupee off, which is why he disappeared off stage. Jerry always denied that he would have done that, and took great umbrage that Bing thought that he would, but the incident still causes controversy to this day with many people believing that it was just the sort of crazy and disrespectful stunt that Jerry would have pulled.

Good because Jerry Lewis was a ass- hole ipacrte. Couldn't join the Rat Pack because Frank Sinatra hated him.

Funny thing. It was always Lewis and Martin. Not the other way around.

I have heard, and I don't recall where, that Bing exited so abruptly because he was afraid Jerry Lewis was going to pull off his toupee. Can't say I blame him I guess, but still.

Lewis was simply out of control. Bing was a more professional guy. What guy, other than Lewis, would jump on another man' and kiss him like that?! Only Lewis. To a guy like Bing, Lewis' behavior was embarrassing.

I read the story about the toupee as well. I believe it was told by Lewis who was hurt that Crosby thought he would do something to hurt Crosby’simage. Hope & Crosby had to know what they were in for when they booked Martin & Lewis. I mean, this IS what they were known for! They turned a two minute spot into 20 minutes of pure gold. And for charity! A top notch act keeping the pledge phones ringing.

Jerry Lewis did hurt his back when he fell

Yes, Jerry has actually said this himself about Bing leaving abruptly for that reason. He probably thought that, because Jerry jumped on Bob Hope and was messing with his hair when he and Dean came out onstage. Bing obviously didn't want to take the chance of him doing the same to him, even though Jerry says he would never have down that to Bing.

givethechanceakid What do you think? He just did it to Bob. Bing was next
@givethechanceakid3 жыл бұрын
@@rickrick5041 Possibly. But Jerry knew Bob didn't wear a toupee, and Bing did. Jerry always said he never would have, but another time he said jokingly he might have. Who knows?

I've seen the Crosby/Hope telethon footage and it was complete insanity. Hilarious but insanity. I understand Bing being afraid that Jerry would rip off his hairpiece, but he was supposed to be half of a comedic team, he should have stayed on stage and rolled with the punches. I also had no idea they were only supposed to do 2 mins, but it makes sense when you hear about club acts they did that ran for 2 hours because the audience wanted them to keep going.

Makes me want to 'pig out' on a lot of Jerry lewis movies. Sea monster. Hilarious. And the mopping, genius. Good old days when laughing at a consequential idiot was permissable. Even when comics wrote that themselves. Wondering who wrote these movies now. Genius.

Weird narration. "One without the other would never have worked." Actually it did, for both of them.

I don’t think that they were wildly successful before they teamed up in 1946. By the time of their split in 1956, they were each well known for this work that they did together. They had phenomenal solo careers after the split.
