God bless Dean. I was privileged to be one of 8 backup singers on his TV show for 6 wonderful years. He was so delightful to work with, just a great guy, no star ego. I miss those years and have wonderful memories. RIP, Boss.

I really became a Dean fan when I found out he stood up for Marilyn Monroe during her troubles while they were shooting her last movie together, Something's Got To Give. He threatened to bail on the project if they replaced her. That made me appreciate the humanity of the guy.

You can see how Dean Paul's death affected Dean Martin. What a parent goes through is something no one can know but the parent. I loved Dean Martin because he loved his family so much and was such a consummate performer. We miss you, Dean

Dean Martin was an incredibly generous man. I know people in upstate New York that knew him, and they told me of his generosity. He came from humble beginnings, achieved great success and never let it get to his head.

Excellent job by the interviewer. She asked interesting questions and then let Dean answer without interrupting. Not easy for most ego driven talk hosts. RIP Dean

I was a student pilot at Williams AFB in Arizona when Dean Paul was going through training. Even though he was the son of Dean Martin, he was not conceited or arrogant or stuck up in any way. He was a very nice personable guy like his Dad. It was a tragedy when he was killed and IMHO Dean never got over it.

One can never say enough on how Dino made each one of us feel. I feel we were blessed to have him on this great earth! His wit, his charm, his ease of delivery, his charisma always will give me ( and I'm sure all of you) immense pleasure listening to him. Long live the aura of Dean Martin!

I had never seen this guy serious for 2 seconds, but here with this sincere interviewer and with more gravity in his personal life, Dean really opened up and was sober minded.

He looks much more than his 70 years here - clearly devastated by his son's death.

There was a moment on one of his Christmas specials when he hugged Dean Paul, and you could tell he just adored that kid. He was sweet with all of kids on the show, but it seemed to me that there was a special attachment to Dean Paul, and his father's pain about his death is painful to witness here. He's clearly gutted, even if he says he's a fatalist, the poor man.

What a sweetheart. God bless him and rest his soul. Hope he's up there singing happily with his son for all eternity. There will never again be anyone to even come close to the likes of him gracing this world again. RIP Dean Martin.

People say Sinatra was the best singer but I think Dean had the better voice by far. His natural vibrato and smooth sound was beautiful...so melodic. I loved him in Rio Bravo and the songs he sang in it. Yes, to me, he was the better of the two.

Always loved Dean and his show in the '60's. He was simply the coolest guy on TV at the time. He would open his show sliding down that Fireman's pole, and inevitably make a self-deprecating joke about reading the cue cards. Dean had the best entertainers in the world as his guests, and always signed off with that friendly, "keep those cards and letters coming in..." From the time I was 7 years old, I always wanted a Ferrari because I'd heard that's what Dean drove. Great guy!

Such a sweet gentle man

I'm from Philly, but Dean and my paths crossed once. On July 22, 1985, I was preparing to tee off at Riviera C.C. in L.A. Three men were playing a scramble and their last hole was the first. My two playing partners and I allowed them to play through. It was then that I saw a frail man getting out of the golf cart was Dean. He was my mother's favorite and I was going to ask if I could get a picture with him for my mom. But I didn't. He was so frail. It would have hurt my mom to see him looking like that. He still had a beautiful golf swing. My playing partners knew Dean as a member of the club and said Dean preferred Riviera over Bel Air as all the celebrities were at the latter, and Dean preferred to play with regular people. Classy.

Dino said it himself in this interview. When a death happens close to home ... "It eats you up"! I truly believe he could not get over the death of his son and honestly believe he grieved himself to death. He was a great entertainer and he has been sorely missed and will continue to be.

He was never the same after his son died really sad.

Dean was one of the greatest of all entertainers and from this time (1987) one of the saddest. To lose a child is unimaginably appalling. And you can see it in his face. So sad. Still, we have the performances to remind us of a supremely talented man and yes that was his own unique hairstyle not a wig as someone wrote. We miss you Dean.

Dean really began to go down hill after his son's tragic and untimely death. He was for nearly 50 years A GREAT, GREAT performer. He had style and lots of talent. rest in peace, weary warrior.

Dean was always so gracious and a class act.

I had a crush on Dean Paul from about age eleven onward. I was driving to the grocery store when his death was announced on the radio. I had to pull over and stop because I'd begun to cry. My three little kids were in the car and were naturally enough frightened I'd begun crying for no apparent reason. I just told them I'd heard on the radio an old friend had died. This was accepted and we went to the store. But, I still miss him.

His talking voice here, the tone, word pace...as he spoke...he sounds like Groucho Marx when they would interview Groucho in his later years. I closed my ears and listened to Dean and I "heard" Groucho. Can't explain it. Even at the end when he was telling the interviewer it was one of the best interviews he ever had -- that deep gravel voice. Spooky. I feel sorry for Dean because he was always so enthusiastic, full of life and that was his style and approach almost throughout his career. This is interview is about eight years before his death. He seems out of it. The personality that was, wasn't there just the respectful man he was showed up. I believe the death of his son Dino changed Dean profoundly. Dean speaks like a man far older than 70. The soul is drained. He talks about the death of his son & Dean is being polite because he's a professional. But you can see that he is uncomfortable. I sincerely believe Dean "died" the day they told him his son was killed. I was always sad for him during this period. Concerned when he did disappear from the public eye. Always liked Dean even though he's not my generation. He was the epitome of cool...not the Beat Generation people. He had this confidence, the swagger, and humor. He knew it was all farce. never took it seriously. Dean Martin was and always will be...cool. I can't think of anyone in entertainment today who even comes close to this man's personality and style. None. RIP Dino...thanks a million for your variety show, your many roasts and your surprise walk-outs on Johnny Carson. I forgive you for putting your cigarette ashes into George Gobel's drink on one show. But that was one of the greatest unrehearsed bits I ever witnessed.

What a singer he was on his day! And he was a good actor! To my recollection he was nominated once for a Supporting Actor award for his performance as a drunk cowboy with John Wayne in a movie Rio Bravo a Western. I miss his TV program on the 70's. He used to bring the best singers, actors of that time. I miss him very much!

He was only 70 years old here, but sadly he seems more like 85.

Dean never got over his son's premature passing. This interview shows that... and how he went downhill afterwards. He was not the same guy. Humble, yes he was. He was always Steubenville, Ohio.

Grief is a terrible hole one can't get out of: this man lost his parents and his brother in the span of 18 months and the death of his son really finished him off. He was a born entertainer and an incredible singer with a voice that will forever be a reminder of his greatness. When I die I will go looking for him to give him a hug

Great interview by perhaps the most courteous interviewer I've ever watched, as she actually let him speak and finish his thoughts. Any Dean fans that haven't read 'Dino' by Nick Tasches should do so...it's a bit dark, but gives a good inside look at the real Dean Martin. By the point of this interview in '87, he was 70 and having some memory problems, and I'm sure his son's death didn't help. The fact that the interviewer was so patient with him made him at ease and willing to share. Even his ex-wife Jeanne claimed very few people got to know the real Dean, but this charming interviewer certainly shed some light on the "real Dean."

The grief and emotion in his voice and his facial expression is so evident in this interview. Such a lovely interview, it made me cry. My mother was a fan of Dean, I grew up with his music, and I was a huge fan of Dean-Paul and his band Dino, Desi and Billy in the 60‘s. I still love to listen to both the band and Dean. His son Ricci, who later took Dean-Paul‘s place in the revived band, died in 2016, followed very closely by his mother Jeanne. All of them gone, but never forgotten.

Deans first language was Italian, like my family. Loved him, had a huge crush when I was a kid. ♥️

Where are the Dean Martin's of today....nowhere, I'm afraid....

Poor Dino....I can only imagine what he must have felt when his son died. My wife & I lost our child last year, she died at birth. It really hurt us then & it still hurts us now. We find ways to cope but time doesn't heal these sort of wounds....it sort of just dulls the sharp pains they create ....it dulls them just a little bit....I can only imagine the pain Dean & his wife & his family felt because Dean Paul was an adult & they had decades of memories. RIP to Dean, Dean Paul, & Ricci Martin.

Dean Martin was absolutely likable. No, I didn't know the man personally, but I didn't have to , to be able to see it. He was a great talent and will never and can never, be replaced.

It shows on him that he is devastated , I’m relieved he wasn’t alive when he lost all his kids with Jeannie, the one girl passed if breast cancer and his other son was found dead in his early sixties , the cause was never revealed, Jeannie died three weeks after her others in died, it was a tragic ending, mind you we all die from old age, but dean and his children with Jeannie had such a sad ending
