So trains are running between Dean Park and Everard Junction, perhaps via Tony North Easton, then across to Dragons Junction, down to Milden Hall and Volmer and District, then westwards towards Chadwick Model Railway, and back via Mackinley, and Lake Side, and across to Jenny Kurt.

I always enjoy your videos Dave, and Dean Park takes me back to an era when I still had an interest in the real railways. Your occasional 'how to' features are always interesting (as are Richard's EJ tutorials and improvements), so I can learn from them and see other ways of doing things. There's no doubt both of you have some superb skills and a big following. On a slightly minus note, and I hope you don't mind me commenting.... those mark 1 coaches really shouldn't have the end steps, and also the brake ends shouldn't have a handle and rail on the roof. With all the fine detail and weathering carried out, those fictional fittings stick out like a sore thumb to me. Keep up the great presentations and I look forward to the next one.

Hornby have been putting out some great models, if they can solve their qc issues and develop some metal pantograph they would be highly praised and congratulated. As it is they're just managing to trip over their own feet too many times and someone there really needs to make some changes or they will not be able to survive in the current market with strong competitors coming into the market and likely more to come over the coming years.

They are nice. But if you go for a swallow livery one check it carefully. As most of them either have some scuffs/marks (caused by packaging), rippled/orange peel paint finish on the dark grey or marks on the yellow strip under the cab window where it has been removed from the sprue during assembly. In contrast the LNER and GNER ones are beautiful. Stunning.

Great video there Dave, some great content covered in this video, I do like the new 91 from hornby and will definitely be considering picking up the loco and the DVT in swallow livery, I won’t be getting the new mk4s because I already have 8 of the original mk4 coaches and from what I have heard the liveries of both the new 91 in swallow and the old mk4 coaches do match each other so if I do get the new 91 it won’t stick out like a sore thumb when paired with my older mk4 coaching stock, the 800 in LNER does look good and the model as a whole is one of hornbys best, as an owner of the GWR version from the first release and it is very good, I do think the light bleed issue is only on the LNER ones, some brilliant work on the wall Dave and that tunnel entrance looked really good, some great work from Richard as well, overall great update Dave keep up the good work.

Looking great, as always. I'm tempted by a new 91. However, I have the original rake with 91014 and mk4s in Swallow livery plus the more recent 91120 and East Coast grey mk4s. The GNER 91 released so far is post-refurbishment, so not really suitable for swallow, and there's not been a plain Virgin East Coast one announced yet (which could run with the EC mk4s) so I'd be limited to 91111 with virgin branding (which I'm not keen on after seeing how speckled the prints look) or 110 in BBMF livery (which is based on the East Coast grey, can't find if there was specific East Coast branding on it). Or, 002 in swallow livery, but that'd probs look out of place with the older coaches in the same livery (unless I stick it on mk3s and get a surrogate DVT as here). I'm gonna go for the mk4s in TfW livery, and get a super detailed 67 to match, at some point. Can't justify a 3rd IC225 set. I should really get weathering more of my 00 stock, and my 3 0 gauge mk1s. I should also get my airbrush working, as I've had it over a year and not yet used it (and one of the pipes is broken). I also need hunt couplings for my new accurascale IIA biomass hoppers, my new JNA falcons, and more.

It's a shame quality control seems largely none existent these days and not only on Hornbys models, having said that I am glad you are pleased with your 91's and did not feel the 10 year wait a let down. Nothing wrong with a bit of modellers licence, I run 70's to around 80's but could not resist an Inter7City HST for my collection and have a few other out of time locos that are mostly for display but do run from time to time. 91's sadly only get as far as York these days but hopefully you will be able to have another trip South and get one. Looking forward to seeing your weathered coaches running, they will look a lot better than the factory finish, I doubt you will give the Azuma any treatment but I noticed the pantograph cars rooves are a different colour to the other cars when I was out filming the other week.
@philnewstead5388
@philnewstead5388 2 жыл бұрын
As always an interesting and varied video but I do think that when we are being asked for such big money for these models things like light bleed, paint imperfections and cheap pantographes is unacceptable, that Azuma is nearly £500 full retail and if you're prepared to spend that sort of money surely you would be prepared to pay a few pence more to not have these faults.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
I’d certainly not be paying £500 for it! It’s simply not worth that. If you don’t run it in the dark (and who does anyway?) it’s nice. But that doesn’t excuse the light bleed. The pantograph bothers me more!… really is a stupid cheap and plasticy design.

Class 800 in diesel would be a good idea maybe get the hst to be pulled by a loco and have say a maintenance team meaning the wires as there down or out could be an excuse to get some network vans Crain and that as if there reattaching the wires. Would be good as most layouts run as a good day no delays or issues. You could change that maybe lots a HSTs at station waiting for the pilots locos to take them past the damages wires queuing outside the station for platforms and allow for maintenance trains to come bast to mend it. Would look good as a story style running season like as the start of vid with hst news article or what Everard dose so well. Could even model customers awaiting rail replacements for closed lines due to the wires been down. Would love to see it

Great blog - for some reason the Class 91 Electra didn't hit me in same way as Intercity 125 or the 3 I travelled most to See Gran at Preston from SouthCoast BR Intercity XC - class 47,86 and 87's. Got the earlier Class 91 train pack GNER 2nd hand about 6 years ago - keeping this but not seeing the Standout moment for me in new Class 91; looks fine model but still don't like the Pantograph and the big increase of costs with Hornby; finished with buying hornby > £30 due to my QC issues I've had on the Class 82 DVT - light bleed being main one; especially for £77

Buying hornby is always a nerve racking experience. As you just do not know what you’ll get when you open the box. Which is poor. I am happy with the GNER, LNER and for the fallen (livery isn’t perfect!) but the swallow is just not good enough. Wonky lines, marks caused by packaging, poor assembly. I got one that was fine, but not one I have handled… well over a dozen now. Is free from imperfections. Which again, is poor.

It is nice to see and hear that Hornby has nearly got something right. The Azuma does look very nice and then you look at the 91 and it is back to square one again. Quality Control Hornby get a grip on it. Nobody likes knocking the same company time after time. I guess when China send over the painted supplies for approval they take that extra care to get them right, We are all blaming Hornby, but they are made in China and I would guess that they are hearing the same from Hornby. The IC swallow 91..... So near, yet so far. There are a few things that jump out at me as immediately wrong - The front windscreens lack any kind of framing around the edges and top which just looks wrong, made worse by the lack of black edging which you pointed out. The colours look about right but the upswept black swooshes from the cab side look a little rough and the angle of each striple including the main grey and red ones and the curved black part on the roof all seem to be at slightly different angles to each other. They got the design of the wipers right for the period, but then they spoiled that by fitting the un-prototypical camera.... UGh! And then there are the issues with paint finish quality as pointed out. That is so typical Hornby - They do the basic design stuff really well, they let it all down with dodgy paint/livery application. Despite all those little niggles, I would still like one, but not at the circa £200 they will be asking for a new one. I will wait a while until they become available second hand and hopefully the issues can be modified with reasonable ease. The GNER version seems to side-step many of those issue to some degree but the issue with the windows remains. They came SO close to getting it right :-/

I’ll prob add more rakes of swallow ones as I’ll be adding more swallow class 91’s as and when they are released. But I like collecting the celebrity livery machines.

I assume the metal strips on the archway are part of tying it all together but being able to take it apart for access? Looks very crisp. Time for a display case for your 21st Century purchases! I'm one to talk. I have four Class 31s on my Scottish layout - my layout, my rules! ;-)
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers. The metal strip is to strengthen the arches as due to the clearance for the upper boards space is tight so the top of the additional arch pieces is thin. So a 0.5mm piece of aluminum just stiffens them up. Once glued to tunnel inside it’s very strong anyway. But I prefer the belt and braces approach. Dave

Random question… i notice on the shots of your HST inaugurating the new tunnel portal (and even the Class 91 and its rake) that your buffet coach seems to be wrong way round? If you look at the flow of the train, you have 2 first class coaches then the seating area of the buffet car before the actual ‘serving area’…. Wouldnt that seating area be standard class seating? And then theres no separation between the first class and standard class… however if the buffet coach was swapped end for end (like on the HST shown in the Everard junction section of the video)…….. then the actual serving area becomes the “separation” between the standard and first class… just curious if this is an over active imagination on my part of not….
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. My buffet is the correct way around for this train. Most of the time this is how it was configured. The seating area in the buffet/restaurant car was usually set up for meals, so not just a normal seating area. There are also instances of it being the other way around. But this is less common. That is how Everard has configured it. The ones on the east coast were configured how I run them. As with everything there were always instances of things being different. It was after all British rail 😆

Excellent as usual! I wonder - I do not know the answer - if you removed all your 80's/90's rolling stock and road vehicles, and replaced them with modern versions, would the rest of the layout be 'correct' ? I guess maybe the signage and the advertisements might be wrong, but otherwise? Not suggesting you do this as it would cost you a fortune in new stuff.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would get away with it, but some infrastructure and details would still be 80’s/90’s relevant. I’d get away running GNER without any changes but for LNER more changes would need to be made. But that doesn’t bother me. I enjoy a LNER modern day running session from time to time regardless :-)

Hi. When hornby first moved to China the stuff they were producing was amazing, they used a factory/company called sanda-kan (correct spelling?!!) that produced first class flawlessly finished models. Sadly that factory was apparently bought over by a rival and hornby had to find other factories to build their stuff. Then that’s when things started to get dodgey. There are good favorites and not so good favorites. It depends which factory hornby use for a particular model that seems to effect the quality!

I know Hornby has come in for a lot of criticism off late , and quite rightly so, however my I suggest you have a look on KZfaq at Hornby beyond the buffers. They talk with the main designer, and gives you a good insight on the difficulties in trying to produce a model as realistic, and true model as possible, like the 91, while trying to keep the manufacturing costs down. The next time you review a mew item, might pay you to look at the other side. No criticism of your review, but sometimes I think your reviews your Expectations are to high. Love your videos

Hi, thanks. I’m hope you enjoyed watching. My expectations are high. And at £200+ for a model, so they should be! My reviews are generally very constructive and balanced…where there is a balance to be struck. I too saw/listened to this enjoyable podcast and it was great to hear from the designer of the 91. I was interested in him talking about how they found the loco wobbled while testing and how he solved the issue. Sadly, he should have tested it some more as the models have a tendency to wobble! Bachmann and Heljan manage to produce flawless running AC locos. So I can’t accept that Hornby have started lagging behind in this area. The finish of the paint on the swallow livery is frankly shocking in some areas! Rippled, orange peel appearance on the dark grey, scuffs caused by the flimsy plastic used in the packaging allowing it to twist and move too much, scuffing the paint on the sides of the loco’s. That’s not a Hornby design issue. That’s down to the Chinese factory. All of the major issues have come from poor assembly and painting. I think my review was fair and I carefully consider the language and tone I use. I’m a fan of Hornby, I really like their new 91. However it’s let itself down in a few areas.

I advise of caution, be very careful of the pantographs as they are plastic and break very easy and do not stay up in position

These panto are ok in comparison to the apt. They feel much more robust and stay up without having to cast a spell on them :-)

@@DeanPark I’ve had both a class 87 and a class 91 from Hornby and in both instances the pantograph have become detached from the locos and trying to reattach them they break compared to the old metal Hornby pantographs which where operational

A bit too forgiving considering the $$$ Hornby is asking.

It depends on your outlook, and how much you want the model. But the swallow one is frustrating.

I thought I’d removed some of the mid rolls ads as I watched it and got p***ed off with them too. I’ll check this again. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. KZfaq automatically flood videos and you have to go back in and manage them.
