Dean Park Model Railway 301 | Accurascale's MGR Under Close Inspection
They are here! - the eagerly anticipated Accurascale MGR HAA coal hoppers arrive at Dean Park. I take a closer look at these all new model railway wagons, comparing it against the Hornby MGR which dates back to 2003. My video includes real video clips, used with kind permission of fellow youtuber Hughesy.

Thank you for another informative video, it seems Accurascale makes very good models, whatever they do. Hornby and Bachmann need to watch out.

Great review Dave. Thanks very much I worked for Trainload Coal for two years in the 1990s before the Trainload operation was reorganised into TLF-W etc, so am very acquainted with these wagons. One distinctive memory is of MGRs passing over jointed track with the consisted thud thud thud thud noise. Thay was captured very well with your blue 37 passing back and fore over the crossovers in your video. Accurascale are most definitely a really great model manufacturer and I have Coil As, 21 tonners and 24 tonners from them, and look forward to my Manor and class 31 in the next year or two. Not wishing to criticise Hornby too much but your mention of prices tells us all.

Those look awesome. The lack of a decent HAA in OO was one of the key reasons I changed to N, but if Accurascale had been around back then I suspect I never would have switched!

Really nice looking hoppers, will look better with some weathering. At the moment they look like they do at the end of the factory production line, not been anywhere yet. On a coal based theme, though non railway related. The last 2 mining equipment factories in the UK will be shutting in the next couple of years. The Joy mining factories in both Manchester and Worcester. I know the Worcester factory was the only place bombed in the city during world war 2, and one person killed. Keep up the good work Dave

Fitting a load under these crossbars is going to be tricky. I wonder if the bars would release if some solvent was applied. I suppose it depends on the glue that was used. Another option might be to use real coal, finely crushed, with some "padding" underneath but making such a load removable is going to be a challenge. I wonder, given the excellent internal detailing, how many will run them as weathered empties.
@DeanPark

I run 30 of the Hornby ones so doubt I will replace them although these look superb. You could buy half a rake of them, I remember somewhere they used to run the train in two halves with a class 26 to a yard where both halves were joined, also some Scottish ones had a blue frame.

Odd - ! - that the designers of the original wagons hadn't anticipated the cross-members being damaged. They are certainly big, almost make the Loco look out of scale - which obviously isn't the case. Thanks for the review.

I've got 3 hornby HBAs with canopy in original bauxite livery, which I got at GETS 2021 (I hadn't realised the tooling dated from 2003 though). I'm gonna order a trio of Accurascale HCAs and Cavalex HFAs (I think) to match, then buy more of them to make up a full train once I have a better overview of the different versions. I also have 30 of the old hornby HAAs in various liveries, which have all had 10g of weight added, original wheels replaced with new metal ones including reaming out the bearings to reduce drag, and parkside plastic loads added. I will be adding crushed coal to the top of the plastic loads to make a more realistic load yet still being easily removable, and also using card or something to jam the bogies stiff (because this is the main source of derailments, always on points and crossovers).

There will always be a market for Hornby ones. The average modeller won’t mind the inaccuracies, they buy Hornby as they know Hornby as a brand. A lot of people won’t have heard of the newer companies.

It’s funny I got 15 from modelfair a sadly missed on line store from urmston ,with coal load thrown in they were unboxed split from sets £20 for all 15,ok they were the 1979 release but wow I got one of the new 2003 hoppers for £6 2004 just shows the prices ,but those hoppers are superb but for 30 plus wagons nearly £800 ouch mate ,I wouldn’t have the heart to weather them either hehe ,great video Dave ,Mark 😊👍🏻

Hi Dave, Out of curiosity could a mix of both Hornby & Accurascale MGR wagons be run in a single rake with the Hornby one’s not looking out of place? Appreciate your feedback on this as potentially once both variants are all weathered this may disguise any differences.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. I’d have to try that. But you can tell who’s is who side by side. I’d imagine the forthcoming Cavalex one and accurascale ones will Look right at home next to each other, but maybe not the Hornby… if they were weathered up, yes you might get away with it :-)

I'd have to red card all those new HAAs as the door safety catches are off on the right hand end. Are they movable at all?

Are you sure? They match any photo I’ve ever seen?
@davidfurmage618
@davidfurmage618 2 жыл бұрын
@@mccarronfamily Yes I'm sure. I spent enough time working with these wagons both as a C&W examiner and a driver to know what I'm talking about. The safety catches, the three white painted 2 pronged gizmos just below the solebar between the wheels, must be in the on position for the wagon to be safe to travel. In most of the shots in the video the two catches on the left and centre are in this position, sloping down from left to right. The right hand catch is in the off position sloping down from right to left. Knowing how Accurascale build their wagons I would guess it should be easy enough to rotate the right hand clip to match the other two if that sort of thing bothers you.

Good video Dave. I'll not be changing my 35 hornby HAAs. The thing that annoys me about Accurascale is they seem to make things in small batches. I bought the outer pack of PTA ore tipplers and have tried for well over a year now to get the inner wagons. I even asked them at model rail and they couldn't really give an answer.
@PatrickConboy1982

Our runs are far from limited, to be honest, and tend to equal or exceed production numbers for similar items produced by other manufacturers. It's not clear what question you asked which you feel we didn't answer, but let me know here and I'll be happy to reply...
@stevehirst536
@stevehirst536 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they make small batches, it's more the sheer popularity of their products so they sell out so fast that it makes it appear that way. Depending on which livery your after there's still a few inner packs floating around online

@@PatrickConboy1982 Hi ,thanks for the quick reply. I'm looking for a pack of the inner PTA wagons in the orange and grey livery to represent the Ravenscraig fleet. I'm just wondering when will they be available. I keep checking ebay and there never seems to be any sign of them.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers. The hornby is not a bad model, if I had 35 like you I’d prob be the same! The tipplers sold out like sh*t off a shovel! Keep the faith, as they’ll do more…. They’ve done second runs of most of their other wagons. So I’m sure these will be the same. :-)
@PatrickConboy1982

@@craigymac5386 We don't provide details of future plans ahead of future announcements but there will definitely be further production runs, so look out for something within the next 18-24 months. The first production was far from a limited run; in addition to the stock we sold directly via our website, our retail network (100+ stores) ordered adequate stock levels to meet their needs at the time. I guess the lack of second-hand examples appearing on the market shows the pent-up demand which existed for those items and that those who bought them have been happy enough with their quality to keep them in their collections...

Thanks for this review. Unlike my CIE A42 that has a handrail missing and the nearside grill that is loose (I did a review lover a week ago on it). I am pleased to hear that your wagons have no issues. I did pre-order a Class 92 in December but I am debating on if to cancel my pre-order of the Class 92 and wait for the reviews first. As its Q3 for release, I think I will avoid pre-ordering from Accurascale in the future because had I known that is was going to be Q3, I wouldn't have pre-ordered. Lessons learned and the likes of Hornby and Accurascale/IRM could learn a lot from Atlas and ScaleTrains when it comes to doing quality and clarity on release dates.
