Thank you for your clear demonstration and information on this controller. I am just starting out (again) after many years of not having the time or space for a layout. Retirement and a vacant loft giving me ideas now. I am totally new to digital, so this was really helpful. Instructions? what instructions? hahaha (They are only for when you are really stuck!). Stay warm in that attic and enjoy your hobby. Best wishes from a wet and windy Scotland.

I'll concur the Elite is a good controller as I use one on my layout without any issues. As mentioned, the dials are a bit strange on responsiveness but altering the speed steps on the CVs can help. The other weird design feature is you have to click the dial of the loco you want to control before adjusting the speed (in other words you can't actually turn the two dials simultaneously to adjust loco speeds at the same time). Clicking a dial makes that dial active for speed control. I have partly solved this by adding a Hornby Select unit as a slave control. I can now control 2 loco speeds simultaneously, one via the Select dial and one via an active dial on the Elite.

Hi, I thought I had them at the same speed, or acceleration speeds anyway! But thanks for that advice, I will try again. Yeah as soon as I had finished the video I remembered the ACC was for accessories lol, I have my point motors controlled by dc just now. Thanks again for your comments and advice

Hi, I have so much insulation to keep the heat in my house that the loft suffers lol... due to the size of the loft it will cost me a fortune to insulate the roof...but I will look into it if the winters here keep getting worse year on year! cheers.

Coming quite late to the party here, but just to clear up for anyone who is wondering, the on / off button toggles the last function that was activated / deactivated on the loco (it's essentially just a shortcut so you don't need to go into the function menu each time if you just have one function!)

Hi, the Elite is a user friendly, easy to understand controller. The Elite allows many trains to be controller at once, but you have to switch between them on your controller, which can be a heart racing task when you have 5 trains + on the move and you need to act quickly lol. If you are controlling only 1 loco at a time then it will serve you well, but to save money you could just go for the Select, or have a look at Bachmann Dynamics stuff? Lenz are also good, but can get expensive! Cheers

I have and Elite and it is fine...... but, I have Railmaster Pro which takes the thing to a whole new level. I urge you to get it. I got mine for £5 from Hattons and then upgraded direct from Hornby for £30. The upgrade gives you more options including adding your phone as a walkabout and I am about to try the voice control facility!

Too late now mate, I have just paid for the Hornby lol. It'll do me to get started. I will hopefully post more videos when I have some more point motors wired up and show the Hornby elite working some more. Doing that over the next couple of weeks along with some scalescenes platform building....its taking me ages :-), but I aint rushing it as I want it done right.

i have the elite its a great controller you have to use the same kind of loco for double heading otherwise they run and keep uncoupling :) but it is simple to use 160pound well spent and also the on off button on mine is for my lights :)

as it is DCC you have to wait for the signal to the decoder to be accepted that is why there is a delay. This is the case with any DCC controller.

Dave please explain how you enable sound functions beyond F9. As F10 onwards requires you to use three fingers on the controller. I use a Select. Is that just a limitation of the select or am I miss something? Some decoders give you another 9 or 10 functions after F9. Thanks.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, on the elite you just press the function key again and it takes you to the f10-19, then again for f20 onwards. That's how the elite works.

Is the Select a nightmare or is it a good controller? I'm constructing a TMD style layout will a Select do me okay or will I need an Elite? It's unlikely I'll be using more than one loco at a time, but what all the DCC features with lighting and movement. Many Thanks, Dave

ACC is for controlling accessories. I use the dcc controller from platform four model railway controls. At £55 it does most of what a select does but at a fraction of the price.
@TotallyScaleModels
@TotallyScaleModels 11 жыл бұрын
You might want to put a Capacity Discharge unit between your power supply and the point motors. Hattons do them, you should only need one. The Bachman Dynamis does Seem easier to use and is wireless, but once you get used to the elite it can do so much more.
@TotallyScaleModels

The speed steps set up from manufactures are often different for each loco. I also have my points on DC control as its a lot easier rather than faffing with the DCC controller.once you upgrade the software on it you can have a Loco with a Hornby 21 pin saphire chip in it you can set it up on a shuttle mode from point to point. check out ay76 he has a vid on it and is very good with the Elite.

Yeah I've spent a couple of £k already and have not even really started on my layout! That roco system does sound good, but one problem for me....I dont own a tablet lol, so would need more £££ to get one of those, cant see my wife agreeing lol.

the ACC button is for when you are using accessories such as point motors. If you want to double head you need to have the locos with the same speed steps. Dont know about the clock, i dont use it.

Hi Dave, four years on do you still recommend the Elite or do you have an urge to upgrade? Cheers Richard
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 6 жыл бұрын
Well, thats an interesting question lol. The answer is yes I do still recommend the Elite. It is easy to use and understand. It works well with the Railmaster software (which I have to admit I dont use all the time - even when I bought a laptop especially for the running of railmaster). The Railamaster software is good, but to operate lots of train simultaneously can be a bit of hassle. If you are running more than 2 trains at a time there is a bit of clicking, selecting, re selections, pressing of buttons etc to keep everything on the move (especially when you're using lots of function on the sound locos etc). Am I tempted to upgrade to the ECOS system at arounf £600?.....yes. But not for a while. The ECOS is the "rolls royce" of systems. And you can use it with your smart phone just like the Railmaster system. Will I upgrade at some point, yes. Am I still currently happy with the Hornby elite, most definitely. What do you use? Cheers Dave

Hi I am just starting up my sons train experience, His granddad got him hornby great western spirit set. Please could you tell me does the track differ from analogue to digital or is it just the controller? Thank you
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 9 жыл бұрын
Amanda Gilchrist Hi, its just the controller that is different, you can still use the same track and points. When it gets to wiring up the points for point motors etc it gets more complex. I assume you are just using the track from the train set pack?, if so all instructions will show you how to deal with points if using DCC should be there (like fitting small Hornby Digital Electric Point Clips - R8232 if required) to the points to make them work better in DCC.I hope this is helpful?, it shouldn't be difficult to get up and running and if there is anything you need to know Hornby are always good with customer help. Or just ask me or others on you tube!Hope your son loves his train set....its a wonderful hobby.CheersDave

I have the Elite controller running my layout and it is essentially all you need to get started with DCC operation. It's not like other systems that come with several components, e.g. a hand-held throttle/contoller and then a base power/hub unit. The Elite is all contained within the one unit. I personally wouldn't pay full price for the Elite, I picked mine up secondhand for $300NZD (approx £150).

@DeanPark
@DeanPark 7 жыл бұрын
simply put go for DCC! DCC allows you to control more than one train on each track, gives more lighting, sound options, allows you to drive the trains more realistically. It allows you a lot more than traditional dc. DC is the old way to control trains, you can control the acceleration, deceleration and lighting at the touch of a button. dc needs track isolation sections to allow trains to run on the same track at the same time. Simply put, DC is the past. DCC is the future. Honestly, it allows so much more for you to get involved with. Its easy to set up and use. I was new to it back in 2012 and went straight into DCC. Read plenty of magazines, check out the Hornby website, RMWEB etc. Just look and listen to what I say I this video. If it doesn't sell you on DCC I will be surprised lol. Dave

Just wanted to add from hearing your video about the clock, it resets every time because it's only used for example running to a timetable and can use a real time ratio of 1:1 or a speeded up scale of time up to 1:10 ratio. But I still think no one is ever going to use this function-Hope this was helpful.
