Dean is literally one of the most damaged/traumatized characters of all time. Poor Sam doesn't know what to say. Also can we talk about how this is such a truly terrifying depiction of hell?

This scene is so hard to watch because I start to cry every time I see it. Jensen put his heart and soul into his job and it shows. He makes this scene look so real? To me that is a sign of a great actor.

30 years is insane, but Alister mentions he tortured their father for close to a CENTURY and he never broke. That is unfathomable and inconceivable.

He said at a con that when they shot this scene, he actually started crying and couldn't stop. He ended up having to walk it off. I don't know if that's the take they used, but it really made me respect him more as an actor.

"You held out for 30 years. That's longer than anyone else would have." Must have really messed him up to learn that dad held out the whole time.

if anyone every doubts that Jensen has amazing talent and an ability to truly sink into a character, they need to watch this.

Back in 2010, when this episode aired, I watched this clip. Did not know the show, plot or actors and this clip just made me feel so bad for this man. This single clip, convinced me to start watching the show. To this day I thank Eric Kripke, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki for creating this amazing show with so much emotion but also horror and comedy. So sad the show isnt what it used to be but still, this will always be one of the best shows in my eyes. And may I say, possibly one of the greatest acting moments on TV? I mean, this is what actors should live up to, the heartbreak you can hear in his voice, the pain in his eyes, I bow down to this man.

This one is truly impressive, this way of playing their role shows their involvement in their respective character, that's why this series is able to reach the tenth season, thanks to their ability to remain great. Maybe one of the best crying scenes in the cinema. Heartbreaking and sumptuous.

Maybe it's because I'm an older sibling. But I've always found Dean's story harder to take, more heart breaking. He's the character that I relate to, the one I always want to be okay and the one who can help me if I'm ever down. I adore him, and his mental health issues (cause there are some) and his drinking, his violent nature should 100% be focused on more. His constant protective nature is something that I am in awe of and also completely understand. He has given up so so much of himself and let go of many opportunities to save so many people and it breaks my heart. His mother has never been a mother, his father is more like a commanding officer than a parent and Sam does seem to be John's favorite, Sam got protected and Dean got punished for wanting a little space. Dean had to look after Sam constantly and when he didn't he was told he failed, and that has stuck with him through his whole life. Deny it all you want but in season 8 Sam abandoned Dean and the people he left behind (Kevin), he didn't try to save him, didn't look for him and kept a promise that was made to be broken, I was not a fan of that story line, because although Sam would sacrifice himself, you saw that when he got freedom, he put himself first, when Sammy went to hell dean would try anything, he would still try to hunt and still try to keep an ear out for anything supernatural. Dean is the strongest and best character is this show for me because of his sacrifices and his never ending loyalty to his family (not just Sammy but Jodie, Cas etc) He is flawed and doesn't always do the right thing for the right reason but that makes him human and that makes him better than a lot of other TV show characters because you see what someone who has no options would do to save the people he loves. I adore Sammy but again i have this connection with dean that is what makes the show special, along with the sibling bond and J2.

This was the scene that solidified for me that Dean was truly a good man in his heart. He went through something most souls don't come back from, and he came out the other side human. I don't know of any others who remained human. They all chose to become demons. The very fact that this is tearing him up is proof of his loving nature. Someone who truly resented the world coming through the other side of that wouldn't feel this way. Yes, he hates what happened, but he wants to be better. He could have become a demon back in season 4 and nobody in hell would've been surprised. He came out the other side human, and stronger because of his experiences.

Knowing that Jensen had to walk off all the emotions he was portraying in this scene makes it so much more powerful to watch

The little hesitation Dean has when he says “carved” is one of my favorite parts of the scene for some reason.

one of the exact moments I knew that I was completely in love with dean. although I find him completely hilarious before this. it's one of the rare times you see that Dean really struggles. Jensen is amazing and really should get an Oscar or the tv equivalent. His portrayal of Demon Dean is amazing too.

i feel this scene is probably the best scene to date that supernatural has ever produced and its all down to jensen and sam. The depiction of the suffering and torment Deans soul underwent during that time in hell is truly scary and heartbreaking to hear at the same time. Solidified Dean as my favorite character in this show too.

That's some truly traumatizing shit. Spending 40 years in hell being tortured over and over again, literally begging to die and not feel anything at all and then you come out and realise that on earth, it was only a few months. Time has barely passed whilst the torture felt like an eternity. I'm surprised Dean isn't more fucked up than he already is

It makes sense that he would be so broken. The one thing he wanted to destroy, he turned into, for 10 full years. He and family's creed and pride to him was trampled on. And besides the constant torment for 30 years, it hurt surely hurt him more that he turned towards to evil during that last stretch in hell. Jensen definitely sold that scene.

Why this man hasn't been awarded with an Emmy is beyond me. Jensen Ackles and the show deserves it! Supernatural is a rare show with really good acting, writing, storytelling and it pulls of a unique mix with drama, comedy and horror. This show deserves recognition. In my opinion, it's the best show on TV.

Poor Dean. The sad thing here is that while Castiel & many angels layed siege in Hell in order to rescue Dean, they managed to pull him out & being him back to life but weren’t able to really save him. The damage was already done and he can never forget that.

He said it in an interview, that this was real, that the emotions came and his body reacted with shaking and he couldn't stop crying.. I think this is what makes all of us wanna cry with him xD and it makes it a much more sadder to watch

This is why the _real_ show was seasons 1-5. I still enjoyed the later seasons most of the time, but personally, I regard seasons 6-15 as apocryphal tales, and the "real" story ends with the conclusion of season 5. Here, Hell is HELL, and even a soul lucky enough to escape it is left permanently scarred by having been there. Contrast that with later seasons where it's just a place, and doesn't seem particularly scary, and the brothers could just pop in and out with a handy spell (like they did in season 15 episodes 8 AND 13). The difference in quality between those first five seasons, and all the rest that came after was night and day.

An emmy or an Oscar....these men are so amazing, and their show is so underrated - it should be one of the hottest shows - if not THE hottest show - in the world!

Damn good acting by Jensen. Normally he plays the role of the goofy/chill older brother, but when he's sad/distressed we all feel it. He can play any emotion perfectly.

The worst part of it all is that he got to hell even tho he didnt deserve, jusr bc he taught he needed to bring sam back to life, not only bc he was depressed and lost over his death, but bc he spent his entire life thinking that was his job to save him, and even after that too, dean was always the guy who would always come back to hunting bc he felt like it was his job to save people, to save the world, bc he felt guilt not doing so, it really hurts seeing such a good man having so much guilt over ahit aint even his fault.

Hug him, Saaam. What's wrong with you?? Honestly this and when Dean confessed about his guilt toward John's death, he looked desperate for something, some word or comfort from Sam. And Sam is just standing there dying in silence in a loss of what to do.

This was by far most heart wrenching scene the whole show. To see Dean break down like that is really hard to watch. Watching Jensen pain on his face seem so real. So I cant imagine much he had to throw himself in to that scene to give that performace but it was fantastic.

Thats some incredible acting. Summoning that emotion and then controlling it? That is not easy.
