There are options and I think we should opt to reduce petroleum based plastics as much as possible and at the same time invest in recycling infrastructure because we are growing as a population of users. Your point about the "green energy" angle: While it's obviously critical to switch to sustainable energy production, also increasing efficiency is still in our best interest. Doing so reduces the amount of supporting infrastructure we need (fewer wind turbines needed for example) and the stresses put on that infrastructure are lessened. For instance, a compostable version of these flexible packages could reduce the strain on transportation networks by reducing the number of vehicles needed to move goods, and by also reducing the amount of energy they need to run, besides human factors like reducing the weight handled by employees, etc. If we have inefficient systems run by "clean" energy, we will be wasting time and resources maintaining those extra windmills, fixing roads that are more heavily traveled, and so on. Regardless if the energy is "clean".

I don't watch all her content, therefore had no idea about this partnership and...dang that's sad 😖Something I've always appreciated about you, Coco, is that you embody nuance while also taking a hard stance on issues such as the fossil fuel industry. As far as we're concerned, I think the climate movement needs to say, yes, we are a part of this system with a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, therefore we must partake in their use to some degree (i.e. transportation of ourselves and products we use, heating our households, etc.). However, I think it's absolutely essential for us as a society to move away from fossil fuels toward renewables and biodegradable/compostable packaging without exception. I just think there's a new emphasis in the "sustainable movement" on what the individual can NOT do, but if that's the case, then why is a plastics company paying (probably a lot) of money to a sustainable creator to convince people that plastics are okay?? This is such a great video from you, and I really appreciate how thorough you are, especially in addressing media literacy. Many people don't know, it is essential to research WHO funded the study!! I just really appreciate you holding her accountable and talking about this not in a way to cancel anyone, but in a way to hold the movement itself accountable.👏🙌 This makes me even more excited to participate in #lettersforchange!!

To add on to this, when you mentioned your comment being deleted, even after she stated that she wanted the convo to continue in the comments, I have witnessed this first hand from sooo many big KZfaqrs - e.g. (no hate to this creator, I really enjoy his content) but Jarvis Johnson had a sponsored post from this 'orbeez' type water gun brand, and he never mentioned anything about the waste, so I made a comment along with a few others, and when I checked back a few days later... the comments were all gone! I also thought the title was very misleading…I think she titled it this way based on algorithm? As for the constant glass example I think she used it because it’s the most common sustainable item people use.. I had conflicting feelings watching the video too. What didn’t sit home with me is like you mentioned, she knows how bad plastic is hurting our environment regardless if it’s virgin or recycled plastic but she chose to be sponsored by a brand that promotes plastic use…
@CocoShin
@CocoShin 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, especially virgin plastic use. I didn't see any recycled plastic on the perfect packaging IG account. I think recycled plastic is okay because it doesn't benefit the fossil fuel industry as much (I think there still needs to be some virgin plastic mixed in with recycled plastic to make it usable) and it turns the plastic waste into a valuable resource, keeping it out of our natural environments. And yes, I am sure the title and thumbnail were for the algorithm and clicks, but that's why it was shady. The majority of the video wasn't about the thumbnail and title, so it was kind of a bait and switch.

I’m really sad to learn that the practice of deleting comments is occurring (if/ where they are not harassing in any way, but asking some important questions that many others Will have), because she is an excellent educator who is up for it, & the ideal one to do so. I did just comment on a video I really liked today, about Lomi & hope it will remain up/ 🤞🏽responded to. It’s marvelous technology, but I beg to differ on being $5-600 technology… while also being called accessible. For those engaged individuals passionate about doing their part for a more sustainable Mother Earth 🌎but living in apartments (1 indicator of low/ limited income)~ Lomi may be the only way to compost, & absolute best (fun even!) way. But… albeit a kick in the gut; to become inspired & enthusiastic, & then learn the price- makes it 1 more thing you’ll Nvr ‘get to have. That’s how the community too often gets a badge of “entitled”, “for the white.. rich..”. It can be the complete opposite as I’m aware (been practicing ‘poor ACTivism’ my whole life). And this isn’t to reflect on Lomi or Pela of course but Must be the next step to act on to give the product the life it’s potential & purpose was created to carry(?). I likened it to her beautiful impact twds Native brand, to demand for incorporating responsible packaging (if they were in fact promoting ’green..’). So many opportunities for (late) advancement in hopes to heal mistakes~ & Can Happen, so long as conversations keep taking place, in position to improve by those of us most passionate(ly coming together).

15:38 as a home composter (bokashi hot compost and vermiculture) I hate these “home compostable” options. From my own research, which could admittedly be flawed, there is no way to quantify the amount of micro plastic pollution produced when these degrade in a home composting situation. They could even be worse than recycling if people “compost” them improperly, as the companies aren’t listing the methods which are suitable. From what I’ve read it is often safer to send products like these to industrial composting facilities. Just because something says it’s home compostable it does not mean it is better for the environment, I don’t know any serious home composters who would put this stuff in their pile.
@CocoShin

Thanks for this insight! I’m not so sure about the chemical composition of these products and if they are actually identical to plastic. I would imagine they are different since plastic is not compostable. Definitely something to look into a bit deeper though!

I recently got into watching Shelbi and more into sustainability. In terms of "social activism" sustainability and climate science is totally not in my wheelhouse but I do believe that it all goes hand in hand with ending oppression and violence towards all forms of life. I do learn a lot from her channel and see her as an "expert" in an area where I don't have the knowledge of the area to know how to question it, so I appreciate you bringing nuance to the conversation. I'm still taking in all the info... and I am curious as to what her reasoning why taking that sponsorship was acceptable given what she's said about sponsors in the past. Personally, I am by no means adhering to a zero-waste life but I try to be conscious of my decisions and just generally buy less and buy less new. But sometimes I do have to use flexible packaging and I do feel less bad about the minimal quantity I try to consume because of her video.

I really like shelbie so I clicked on this video knowing I wasn’t going to be happy about what you had to say. That being SAIC I think you very respectfully laid out your arguments for why you think this video had its faults and I do think you have a point. It is clear that big plastic is behind those studies and for a good reason, it really found in favor of their product. So who knows how much we can trust. That being said when I watched that video I remember looking up the sponsor and if I remember correctly they do a lot of studies on the plastic at the beginning of its life which is one area I don’t know much about. I recall looking at a comparison guide for cat litter and it showed the thin plastic as utilizing less resources than the cardboard box packaging which made me feel a little relieved because I had just switched my cats from a clay litter to a walnut shell litter as I wanted to start composting their waste and there was only one brand on the market for compostable materials that was in cardboard and they were much more expensive. It did make me feel like I wasn’t s horrible person for choosing the plastic packaging to save money as it was already double what I was previously paying. I do think that the video did have the effect where you do start to feel more comfortable with plastic but I don’t think that’s the first time she has mentioned that plastic isn’t as bad when you look at it’s start of life cycle. I do think part of the problem with those studies is that they show how much water is used to make something and I feel like the water they are accounting for in the cardboard also includes the water the tree needed to survive but a lot of that water does come from rain and we do need trees so I’d really like to just see what’s used after the tree is cut down to get a fair comparison. When I watched that video I didn’t really feel like it wasn’t her thoughts and feelings being portrayed but I do see your point about how it does make plastic seem like a more acceptable product because that was definitely my take by the end. That being said I do still think plastic should be avoided as much as possible but it did make me feel like in the instances where I absolutely cannot avoid it, it maybe isn’t the worst thing in the entire world. But I really think a study to show what happens after the consumer is done using the product would be useful. How long does the plastic stay on this earth, can it be recycled, what can it be remade into, if it stays in the landfill what negative impact does it have on our earth. What’s the afterlife cycle of the alternative, how many resources does it take to remake it into another product (does it take just as many resources to create that cardboard litter box with recycled cardboard as it does virgin cardboard)? I’d just like more information to really determine what is the best package out there because it’s really unclear. I’d also really like to know what the packaging is that bulk grocery items come in because we see it without packaging but there is packaging behind closed doors that we are completely unaware of. I’d also like an analysis of the resources to pick up an item in store vs to have it shipped directly to your home. Which is better ? I saw a video of hers earlier today ask this question and she said we really can’t be sure so I’d love more direct information on this. I wish more companies were transparent because this stuff is important and it’s too hard for the average consumer to figure out

Yes, I thought I was going crazy too with wondering why she was making that particular video. Then I *finally* got to the sponsorship disclosure at the end and it all be came crystal clear. The title and content of her video makes it seem as though she’s saying “Zero waste isn’t the solution, virgin flexible plastic IS”. She completely glosses over the end of life problems for plastics (microplastic and the ocean) and that to me seems the very biggest reason to avoid plastic. I cringe at the idea that there may now be a bunch of impressionable teenagers and 20-somethings thinking that virgin single use plastic is the best way to save the planet. Im too old for “cancel culture” but I did unsubscribe from her channels. I hope they paid her very well to sell her soul and potentially the future of her channel (and other social media).

It depends on how much it's worn. I've stopped used using it. MOST of it is made from pilymer's and it breaks the surface in no time shredding microplastics every day, where ever you go around. It really is a shitty material if you'r someone who's active and dont own 10 pairs of shoes or boots. As someoneliving in a colder climate it's useless. Using textile or second hand leather will last you.

I really don't think the "bioplastics" are harm free. I've seen information online that it actually does pollute the soil, so it's better to put it in the landfill if you wind up with it. It's the same for the chemicals in "compostable" paper cups

Is it possible to ethically promote brands as a Sustainability KZfaqr? It seems like that is a big conflict of interest. Even if the brands you're promoting are sustainable brands, being paid to promote a brand gives the impression real or not of conflict of interest. Is one promoting the brand because they offered you money or because they are the best sustainable option? And when someone watches your videos and buys the product are they purchasing said brands because they really NEED that item or because they want to support your channel, or because they like your aesthetics or aspire to be like you? Purchasing anything new is not as sustainable as buying nothing or buying used. And when more and more of your content is sponsored it seems like your channel is more about consuming than educating. I don't think that is eco minimalism as she calls her channel. How is that minimalism? A lot of her content is about buying something. I see this as an issue not just with Shelbi's channel but other KZfaqrs who focus on sustainability. Is any eco friendly channel going to act differently when presented with promo offers and growing popularity? Who among them will keep their head and be able to separate their mission from their income? Wouldn't most eco KZfaqrs aspire to be like Shelbi? Making a living off of their channel. Growing their channel to be so popular. I see Shelbi's content becoming more and more about products so I recently unsubscribed. It made me feel more anger than good to watch. The plastics episode aside promotions in general can easily cross a line. Maybe there is no line. Maybe it's just not a sustainable thing to do.

I’ve had to unsubscribe from those affiliated with the US military(world’s biggest polluter, I believe if we forget the US military as a imperial force) or subletting properties to the degree that they live in places for free without any self awareness about the difference that makes to what is accessible to them vs the viewer. I think making careers as influencers will always be a tricky balance and we viewers are also complicit.

Can you please point out where Shelbizleee announced her sponsorship/partnership. I don’t see it at the last two minutes and her video is too dreadful to watch completely. Also, I thought that affiliations had to be disclosed up front, both verbally and in writing. You don’t discuss this in your video but she is also completely wrong about the philanthropic aspect of this brand. The Inkey List has only stated its ambition to donate 10%. That is not a commitment and I don’t know where she gets her facts from. Thanks so much for your detailed analysis.
@CocoShin
@CocoShin 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think it came around the 12:00 minute mark in her video. She probably also disclosed in her description box too. I don't think affiliations have to be disclosed but sponsorships do. For example, if I talk about a brand I am an affiliate of, I don't think I am legally obligated to disclose that I am an affiliate, but if the brand paid me to make the video, I would have to disclose. I didn't know about the philanthropic aspect of the brand, but it makes sense. It's probably similar to how to tobacco industry has to fund anti-smoking campaigns.

I will say, I'm not sure I agree with supporting vegan leather (unless it's from recycled plastic products). From my experience, vegan leather does not hold up as well and the movement often shames indigenous people who sustainably harvest leather (&fur). But other than that, this was a great video! I also thought her video didn't sit right with me, and most of her newer content hasn't either. I feel as if she's more disconnected with her videos now, either doing the same content over and over or, like you mentioned, not doing the due diligence to vet her info. Could be because she's outsourcing research to another team member perhaps? But lately I've definitely felt that the money has become paramount for her content, only recommending products that she receives a kick back for instead of exploring alternatives or providing info that her audience can use to make better decisions that's within their budget/ resources. Thanks for opening a dialoge!!

Yes, I have noticed the same pattern with her content as well. It's a tricky balance to hit as a content creator: please the algorithm and give people the content they are searching for, support yourself (and in her case, her team), and create authentic and original content. I guess she has been mostly focused on the first two lately. 😕

I unsubscribed from Shelby before the pandemic hit. I felt she was turning into a buying channel and only new was sustainable. I never noticed her take into account that her viewers already owned non-sustainable products before going zero waste. Isn't using pre-existing stuff already better than buying new, no matter what it's made from. Also, every person's situation is different and every country, town and council district is different. I'm in rural Australia. I don't have the privilege of all her nearby zero waste things to buy. Things are trucked or mailed in. Also, as an example, glass jars are not ideal for everyone to drink from. I had kids and now have several grandchildren. No way am I giving them glass to accidentally drop and shatter. I bought 1 plastic sippy cup each and reuse them each visit. When the grandkids have outgrown them I'll pass them on.

I don't think you actually listened to the points Shelbi made in the video; it seems like you heard the word "plastic" and instantly recoiled from the information she was trying to present. I don't think shelbi is saying that the plastic industry is good (why would she say that? all her other videos go against big plastic companies) but rather that every type of material, including glass and metal, have an environmental impact BEFORE they make it to us, and we shouldn't JUST focus on what happens to the materials after they are purchased. She does say that there needs to be better recycling options for plastic. Again, the point of her video is that not everything is black and white (which you mention!) and so saying "ALL PLASTIC BAD" is actually not that simple
@CocoShin
@CocoShin Жыл бұрын
Did you listen to the points I made in my video? I actually watched her video multiple times to make sure of what I was hearing and seeing. She skates over alternatives that are not nearly as polluting such as paper (commonly used as packaging in Germany) and other compostable flexible plastic alternatives. Glass and metal are far from the only alternatives out there. It’s one thing to use plastic in one’s everyday life, even as an environmentalist. It’s another thing to accept money from a plastic lobbyists to talk about the benefits of flexible plastic, which is one of the biggest polluters in the world. This “association” is doing real harm in America by stymieing progress in legislation and convincing consumers their products aren’t that bad, including through partnerships like the one with Shelbi. I was extremely disappointed after watching her content because it was so misleading (for reasons I mentioned in this video) so much that I was compelled to make this video.
