Today, I, Coop want to talk with you about squat rack ecosystems. This is a topic that most home gym owners interact with every workout, but isn't discussed a ton within the home gym community.
The Squat Rack Ecosystem is how the rack connects together and how attachments connect and interact with the rack itself.
The current state of the squat rack ecosystems that are available are quite similar. Some holes on tubular steel with bolts and nuts. Some change the diameter of the holes, other change the size of the uprights, but they're all pretty close to one another.
I think there are ways that companies could create better systems for assembly and use that removes friction and makes it quicker and easier to use attachments and train.
Here's my take...

This one is just a bad idea. Closed ecosytems work when you can obtain a large enough market share. Apple, for example, has 25% of the market share for mobile operating systems. The market for smartphone users is 6.7 billion people (84% of the world's population). That's a different beast than tying to build a very expensive piece of equipment that only really appeals to home gym owners. Your market is TOO small and your competitors are TOO numerous. How many companies make a 3x3 rack? A dozen? A dozen companies competing for the same small market seems like a good recipe for failure. How many people buy multiple attachments for their rack (excluding J-cups and safeties)? I have a fairly large home gym and a fairly decent income and I have 0 attachments. The only attachment I would really use right now is a dip station but I have a standalone dip station that was cheaper than an attachment. By creating "open source' attachments each manufacturer aims to gain cross sales to buyers of other brands.

Amen to that. I’ve noticed it’s rare to see someone in the home gym community understand economics but this is spot on. I admire Coop for taking a shot here and I know tech is his second love after gym equipment, but it doesn’t scale well like you said. I know Coop has discussed marrying fitness and tech in a way where it’s accessible and usable by all and this stream of consciousness was a good attempt but it just wouldn’t be viable in practice and any company that would try this outside of Rogue would not survive. The current setups today are expensive enough so a closed system would just add more to the price tag of already expensive equipment. Honestly, the main purpose of a rack is to help people lift stuff (bars, lever arms, etc.) up and down and the current offerings do that now. If Coop had specific examples of what racks currently can’t do right now and how a close system could help with that, I would’ve been more convinced. But the gym equipment market is an enthusiasts’ game similar to things like mechanical keyboards and sneakers. The market is small but it will feel loud if you’re actually a part of part of the community (subreddits, forums, Facebook groups). Most people who buy this stuff just want to be able to bench, squat and maybe do pull ups and dips. Those that want more make up a smaller chunk of the market. At the end of the day, margins for manufacturing and shipping heavy steel are small and the use cases are very limited, especially compared to tech.

Hard disagree here. The market for a closed system like this would be so tiny that any company that attempted it would go out of business before it took off, unless they had some seriously deep-pocketed investors willing to wait it out. Maybe Tonal could pull it off, make a smart squat rack (I have no idea what that would even mean). Also, Apple products are hugely overpriced precisely because of their closed ecosystem. Fitness equipment is already expensive. Imagine paying double for very minimal improvements and having to rely on a single company to produce all compatible attachments, so if they don't make it, you just can't have it. And Microsoft tried for decades to destroy open source and only recently has done any real open source work, although it's not on anything consumer-related, that stuff is all still proprietary. They do make it easier for 3rd party hardware to be more compatible because they only owned the software side of things for so long, so I guess I see what you're getting at, but as a software dev, hearing Microsoft as a representative of open source make my gears grind.

I am so confused by this. Are we saying each company should do something special so that you can only have what that single company decides to create and at whatever price they pick? That’s ridiculous. If Rogue doesn’t make something, I don’t wanna say well I can’t have it. If ghost has better roller Jcups then anyone, I don’t wanna settle for worse because there’s a closed system. One of the absolute worst ideas I’ve ever heard. It literally make no sense to lock in a home gym community to a specific brand with limited choices.

Coop is dead wrong. The first company that tries to make a closed ecosystem will have to release everything that is already available all at once and at better prices than everyone already in the market. 1 example, Reps spotter arms have been out of stock now for months. No big deal, I paid a little more and bought some from Rogue that work just as well, could have paid a little less and bought Titan. I had options to work around a supply problem. I had $200 to spend and my chosen ecosystem wouldn't let me. It is beyond stupid to lock your customers into proprietary things. Make the ecosystem open and compete on quality and price arguably the 2 biggest names in this space are doing just that, Rogue and Titan. Both are doing just fine. But the openness of this system allows companies like Ghost to come up with the Roller J-Cup. Forcing your customers to do things your way is just a bad way to treat people. How it's worked for Apple this long is beyond me. Everyone else that has tried it has failed, and even Apple has failed at parts of it. AAC encoding and DRM for iPods come to mind..... If a 3x3 rack with 1 inch holes and spacing is strong enough for a man like Coop, it should be strong enough for anyone. We've seen droptest after droptest and the racks survived. Companies I beg you, don't waste time creating an "ecosystem" make the best attachements you can for the 3x3 racks with 1" and 5/8" holes and you'll be set.

I haven’t disagreed with you this much since that one time you suggested companies make the “unboxing experience” more boujee😂 If each company could have more quality products with refined features that are maximally optimal, then that would be great. But I don’t think a closed ecosystem would be the right way to achieve that. What do I think WOULD be the best route to do that? Idk. I'm sure Rogue and REP would love to create a closed eco system to force consumers to only use their attachments but they would immediately lose market share. They are better just going down the superior quality and customer service route. When it comes to commercial gyms I'm sure they have ways of tying them into only using their products through special discounts and financing options. Most garage gym owners tend to be tight asses and will shop around for the cheapest attachment that is safe to use.

I get the point, but think you're over complicating it. I'd take your original analogy and amend to something more of the company being the main platform, the uprights being more akin to the internals (commodity hardware), and the attachments being the apps. Like you said, not a lot of differences in the actual commodity aspect, but where companies differentiate themselves are in other regards (like customer service, quality, warranty). You like apple b/c of the user experience. An android might have better specs, or better prices, but if it doesn't work the way you want it, then that doesn't mean it's better for you. When I get the question of Company A vs Company B I give them the ecosystem pitch that there's really no difference in uprights outside of maybe width, depth, height and country of origin, but where the decision is made is more based off which ecosystem of attachments they want to commit to that will only work with that rack, but the good news is you can still usually adapt other pieces as long as its say 3x3 with 1" hardware.

I am actually more for any attachment being compatible for any rack so I advocate for open source... Right now the only real limitations to attachments within a brand is regarding width or length of the rack... So you can't necessarily use the same pull-up bar, seat/bench, or lat pulldown from rack to rack but jcups and lever arms are likely not an issue if hole size is right.... If anything I want those more standardized so you can put any attachment on any rack take the best from each... I don't want to change my rack to get a single attachment while possibly losing other attachments I have... Adopting a unique notch style (like hammer strength has) or adding UHMW (like Atlantis does) to a rack would throw off the post sizing and make the attachments unique the rack for sure.... Companies would benefit from this more than users... The coop squat and concept behind would fall by the waste side if that was the case and we don't want that! I don't want to be limited if anything I want even more options

I love the open source nature of racks currently. I've stated it so many times, it's essentially an erector set. In many industry verticals, especially IT, what you're describing from the customer side is best of breed vs. best of suite (or sole source, or like 5 other terms). Every vendor out there has created or is trying to create a product ecosystem (Microsoft is one of the best examples between their desktop, cloud and hardware options). The ecosystem will work (in theory) better together and they will often offer discounts by expanding your footprint in that ecosystem. That's the benefit of best of suite. The drawback is that the best ecosystems rarely have every solution, or even many of their solutions, as the best offering for your business challenge. Which is why customers often go best of breed and work to integrate (which has its own benefits and drawbacks). If companies were to create uprights as their base offering, then all of their attachments as extensions of their ecosystem, and they offered scaling discounts as you expand within their platform, then I could see the value. But we all know that's not going to happen. I'm struggling to see how this would provide any value to a consumer, but then this video doesn't seem to be aimed at the consumer.

I have a 2x3 rack that I bought when I first got into training and it kinda sucks because the attachments are a bit more limited in variety than if I were to have gotten a 3x3. The thing about proprietary rack ecosystems is if a product is released for it and it sucks, or if a different company releases a great product but it doesn't fit your proprietary rack slots, you're out of luck.

One of the problem with this theory is that your phone analogy is that a phone is consider disposable while a power rack really isn’t. With a phone, you upgrade roughly every 2 years so those companies want to do more to entice the other platform. A power rack isn’t something you can just swap out and manufacturers know this so they need to market to the widest network to move their products. I guess the real question is how would they be able to make the experience better with a closed ecosystem that would justify these trade offs?

The Inspire SCS system is an example of a closed system you speak of. It's the only system I've found so far that has packed together a rack I can use for free weight barbell movements, all cable movements with the adjustable dual-handle functional trainer, machine movements using its cable system like lat pull downs, leg extensions, hamstring curls, weighted ab crunches, and standing/seated calf raises with the smith machine, all in the footprint the size of a standard 4-post rack. So while it's not perfect and has its downsides like metal J-hooks and safety arms, it's a good example of a closed system that has used its proprietary nature to do something that no one else has really done yet in that same footprint.

Most people who buy this stuff just want to be able to bench, squat and maybe do pull ups and dips. Those that want more make up a smaller chunk of the market. At the end of the day, margins for manufacturing and shipping heavy steel are small and the use cases are very limited, especially compared to tech.

I think the 4-way post can be improved on, but I also don’t think it would necessitate a closed source route. E.g. if there was a type of sophisticated gear & tooth ratchet system to adjust attachment height quickly and more precisely. It would be better, but there’s no reason other people couldn’t replicate that just the same as 4-way posts. Then the attachments could still be universal. I feel like this video missed its mark because I kept waiting for a solution to the “problems” listed. But maybe Coop will drop a pt. 2 & elaborate 🤷🏽‍♂️

A closed system = Less freedom of choice. Once a successful closed system gets in place they will stiffle creativity, progress, and competition. That is what Apple does. Yeah, great all their devices work together... only if you keep buying from Apple. New Apple phone gets released, has new features, feature was available on Android two years ago, Apple is only successful with the feature because their customers had no choice in the matter. Apple people tend to not know what they are missing, they only know that their devices talk to each other. And that's great for a lot of people who don't know how, or don't want to bother with the details of different OSes and services. I would love some interchangeability, and standardization of squat racks and accessories. There is some, but there are a lot of differences in upright dimensions. I think that's the opposite of what you're talking about here though.

Isnt the Ironmaster IM2000 exactly what you are describing? The uprights that are not just uprights but also part of a smith machine? They use different dimensions for the uprights so you can only use ironmaster attachments. And the unique benefit aside from the smith machine: IM2000 has a smaller footprint than other racks. Which is an substantial upside for home gyms.

For me, I think about assessability. Fitness should be accessible for all…and one of the things I think about most regarding the accessibility of fitness is the cost. I feel a closed ecosystem might corner users into buying proprietary products within the ecosystem that may have higher prices due to “exclusive technology”. Now if the product is THAT good then users will buy it but the whole idea of a squat rack eco system just seems too much in the early adopter phase or that there hasn’t been a worth the cost solution to actually commit to one of these ecosystems. At the end of the day Coop, we’re talking about some holes in square tubes with varying thicknesses of metal with some potential mechanical quirks. With fitness equipment (and any product design), keeping it simple is best.

Most people struggle to afford home gyms in the first place. I'm not sure how this would benefit anyone but the wealthiest of this already niche market - locked ecosystems will probably crop up when smart gym tech grows, but at least on the existing hardware I see zero reason to de-standardize the market.

Coming at this as an Android and 5/8ths REP person that has a Franken Rack with some of the more unique and innovative attachments, like Mutant Metal Snap back roller monos and Irwin Fitness Monos : it is pretty arrogant of a company to make a closed ecosystem that they feel is the best of every single attachment ever made, necessity is the mother of invention, a product that helps someone train around an injury etc. IMO this ecosystem creates a need to only buy their product line and there is no pressure to keep price low through competition. What happens when their supply chains dry up or hit a snag?

Titan does make attachments that use the keyhole. The neck attachment for example. It’s the same 5/8” design as the one for their X3 it just has a 1” adaptor on it to fit the 1” holes on the series rack.. meaning hole spacing lines up with the “key hole” so it still requires a 5/8” pin in the bottom without them having to completely redesign a new product for the 1” holes.

I dislike closed source systems in a home gym. The main thing keeping me from buying a prime HLP tower or rack is that it isn’t four way hole spaced and not “1 holes. One company is never going to make the best attachment for everything, so you’re gonna lose out on the best of something if you’re locked in that way.

Extremely confusing post for me lol. I think Coop just switched over to Apple, liked the ecosystem and tried to apply it to racks where it doesn’t make as much sense. The only benefit of a closed system to the consumer is quality control. Apple won’t let random crappy apps in their App Store, Nintendo won’t let random crappy games use their platform, etc. Not true of Android. If Apple opened up their platform to open source, all of the current products Coop has would still work. Same with racks, if Rogue switched to 2.7” racks, then I guess rogue customers wouldn’t be able to buy crappy titan attachments to save money and end up regretting it lol. This also forgets one very big issue: closed systems already exist, namely FORCE USA. They sell their all-in-ones with a 2.4” x 2.4” rack no one else uses and include like 10-20 attachments. They have everything from racks with cable weight stacks, smith machines, dip station, etc. However, most serious weight lifters don’t buy G force specifically because it is closed-source and you’re stuck in that ecosystem and while it might be good for a beginner/immediate with limited space, more advanced lifters may want custom Ghost Strong j-cups or rogue monolift 2.0, etc. Coop reviewed the Gforce series and said some attachments were good and some were not which means if for example you hate their monolift, you’re screwed since no other mono works with that rack. Finally, Coop mentions the racks are not exactly identical since the width and height of the racks vary so some attachments are not compatible so they’re already semi-closed systems. If anything, having a single standard would be better so you can use an Ares cable system on a rogue rack, Rogue rhino on a rep rack, etc.

Coop, could you provide some examples/ideas of what you mean when you say “benefits of a closed eco system” for weight racks? I fully understand the improved “customer experience” aspect of a closed eco system in regards to the Apple analogy you made. Every thing works seamlessly and makes it easy. But I am struggling to come up with “improved customer experience” examples for weight racks? What is the weight rack feature/capability that is going to drive such a better customer experience that a closed eco system is something customers gladly accept? Are you thinking about stuff like automatic weight loading/adjusting for barbells or some other crazy capability I am just not thinking about?

Usually love the reviews but this one is out of left field. Seems like you’re asking for standardization instead of open vs closed. Hole sizing, tolerances, etc can all be given to the consumer. Open standards help companies compete for the customer’s money. Proprietary systems lead to anti consumer behavior, like apple’s opposition for right-to-repair.

Wouldn’t it be easier if all companies would use the 3x3 1” for the uprights, and then let 3rd party companies maximize the functionality of attachments? It feels like most companies are trying to patent their designs which makes it hard to have a good open source market for attachments. So if a company wanted a “close source” system, they would have to make sure they aren’t running into another companies patented design or other hoops to jump through. I would like to see all squat rack uprights be the same(preferably holes on all four side with keyhole design), while the same companies also offering custom length cross members, and third party companies develop some really cool and functional attachments. I think that would really push invitation and help consumers the most. Idk how I feel about this take. I think the last thing we need it an overpriced ecosystem when home gym equipment can already be expensive.

Ok honestly just getting started here...I literally have Sunny Health Rack from Amazon it too has its own ecosystem that due to size doesn't play nice with any of the 3x3 stuff. But even it uses the hole post uprights. What would an example of an ecosystem without or beyond holes look like? One that was still fast and easy to use while still strong and safe.... I dont see one on my head. I do agree and feel like once they came up with the rack they just keep throwing stuff at it and once you get enough pieces they fail to integrate well and it becomes a piecemeal design opposed to a full usable interface of parts.

If the goal is to make better attachments & tighter tolerances, then open source allows for competition. I like being able to utilize a Titan Roller J-cup or a Rogue Monolift on my Rep Rack. I can pick and choose from several manufacturers, account for the 3" vs 2.95" tolerances, and find the best attachments for my needs (and relying on GGR to help me make those decisions). That choice and competition, when factored in with price point, benefits the consumer most. I agree that upright design is lagging...the materials, construction (laser cutting vs decals) and finish have gotten better over time (and largely because GGR calls them out when they fall short). While I'm also wholly into the Apple eco-system, there's a reason they call it the "apple tax"...you pay more for ease of use for AirPods...when third parties (Bose or Logitech) might actually fit your needs better. So, a hybrid approach...sure...could work...I would prefer more R&D and creativity in attachments, then rethinking the upright. Similar to how open trap bars have evolved, sometimes improving and sometimes losing sight, of the original iteration. If the only open trap was from Eleiko, I'd pay the Apple tax...but I like that other manufacturers see it and do their own take on what could be better for some at different price ranges.

Sounds like Coop is ready to create the ultimate squat rack ecosystem. Hope to see you in Miami at HIRSA. Eleiko has a closed 70mm x 70mm eco system right now with the Prestera line that they launched at the end of 2021. I don't know of any other manufacture making 70mm x 70mm attachments. There might be some, but I don't know about them. They came out with both sliding J-cups and detachable j-cups. Same with safety arms. The line can be expanded from a simple 2 post to a dual squat rack. They have at least 3 pull-up options and 1 dip bar option. They have a landmine. They also have shelving for their racks. Heck they even have a Smith Attachment that will work with their racks. Their Prestera Adjustable Pull-Up Handles are probably the best out there right now. That said their products are often out of stock and they certainly don't have some of the cooler attachments that Rogue and Rep have come out with like the slinger and lever arms. I do have a feeling that Eleiko might come out with a slinger option this year. And Eleiko is the closest thing to Apple that I can think of as far as looks. Very refined equipment. And of course you can't forget the cool Knurl knobs.

I think the disconnect for me on this is I can't imagine the benefits a closed system could bring to a rack. What could a proprietary hole shape offer the consumer other than locking them in to that single ecosystem? Maybe if you had shared some of the ideas that you have. I'd be with you if I could see that but since I can't, I'm happy as things are where competition is on customer service instead of ecosystems.

One problem is that by creating a new ecosystem, you create barriers of entry for existing customers, which usually isn't a good thing. One example is cameras. When a camera maker switches to a new lens mount, people with existing cameras can't use the new lenses without an adapter. If they buy a new camera with the new mount, their existing lenses won't work without an adapter (and adapters usually have downsides in addition to the cost). If Rogue introduces a new rack ecosystem, existing Rogue owners won't be able to use all the fancy new attachments (unless there are adapters), and if they bought a new rack entirely they wouldn't be able to use their existing attachments. There would have to be some really serious utility to the new system (way better attachments, far easier to use, considerably cheaper to manufacture) for an existing company to introduce such a system.

Apple/Android is not a good analog to the squat rack world at all. The smart phone market dwarfs the squat rack market. Apple may be called a “closed system”, but a lot of third parties put out accessories compatible with Apple because the market is huge. This keeps the prices reasonable. This won’t happen with the relatively tiny squat rack market.

IMHO the majority of home gym setups are a conglomeration of equipment and brands of equipment selected for the specific needs of the people using them. If anything they are normally ad hoc selections based on price, functionality, and space. To be locked into a specific brand because of a proprietary system would be very limiting. My specific space requirements already imposes limitations and I've had to MAKE the equipment I have fit the space. My wallet has its limits as well. My exercise routine and my desired fitness goals are not the same as that of a pro athlete nor am I trying to be a pro.
