Back in classic who there was a long running, and much loved character called Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart played by Nicholas Courtney, who was in charge of unit. In the story he is Kate's father, so for us old Who fans it was much more than just a father/daughter moment when The Doctor salutes the cyberman for saving her life. Had me in tears at the time.

I always get the feeling that both the doctor and the master want to be friends again so badly but on there terms not the others. Its kinda sad that despite everything thats happened between them they still do care about each other

I like when we explore the relationship dynamic between the Master and the Doctor. I wish we had gotten more of it.

That depends on your definition of caring The Doctor might care for the Master but the Master doesn't care for the Doctor he/she's a posipath all the Master wants to do is cause chaos and destruction she's taunting the Doctor alot of people seem to misread this as if The Master wants to be friends with the Doctor she doesn't really she just wants to make his life miserable we seem to forget there have been times when The Master tries to kill the Doctor.

There are times where the doctor's actions lead to the death of the master too, heck if you're current with things in the show you should know why this is a terrible take.

Glad you enjoyed this. I really dug Capaldi's Doctor in a way I didn't quite get into Smith's. And I would agree, the Doctor/Clara dynamic in this season is so much better than before. There's history with that, though, in the classic series. There's a couple of companions who I think work much better with the new Doctor they get saddled with when compared with the one they start with. I'm glad we got this with Clara.

I love this final episode. The 12th Doctor and Missy have so much chemistry together. Best Master of modern Who by far. You’re right the theme throughout is about truth and lies. Not many people pick up on that. Loved your reactions. Looking forward to seeing your responses to the Christmas special. Happy New Year to you both.

Also, I love how this episode deals with the cybermen, and how it fully explores their original commentary of what it means to be human! So often it seems doctor who forgets that and just treats them as robotic shells and plops them in a story that it feels many other villains could have been in, instead of it being an actual Cyberman story. All those scenes in the graveyard are pure perfection! And coupling it with Michelle Gomez as Missy made a killer Finale imo!

I'm so glad you liked this! I forgot how emotional that ending gets, with the kid, and Capaldi's face as we see him punch the TARDIS from frustration after he lies that he found gallifrey... This is such an amazing season

Steven Moffat was juggling alot around the time of series 7B, as you mention he also had the 50th to worry about, but beyond that he was the Co-Showrunner of the BBC Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbach, and that had exploded to similar heights as Doctor who a few years before. So he was working on the 2 biggest TV shows in Britain and the 50th anniversary all at the same time, I honestly don’t understand how the BBC expected him to juggle it so much. Although, thankfully the BBC allowed the production of Sherlock to take a few years break until Moffat finished his era of Who so the quality had a very noticeable improvement for both series!

I don't think the BBC did expect him to, but there was no one else to run doctor who at the time. Moffat has said he wanted to quit around this time of series 8, but there was no one yet to hand it on to and I think he loved the show so much he didn't want it to take a hiatus.

Apparently back in the summer of 2016, he gave a interview in DWM coming fully out and saying that working on S7 was "miserable" because of what he was juggling. He says the reason he stayed is because he didn't want to have a miserable production year be the end of his era.

I don't buy for a single second the idea that Kate's father ever wanted the Doctor to salute him, let alone that he always wanted it. Umpteen episodes of classic Doctor Who suggest otherwise. The whole idea of him becoming a Cyberman sits really badly with me though anyway. We'd already had a nice tribute moment a couple of series earlier when the 11th Doctor learns of his death... that was the right ending for the character IMHO.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the characters arcs this season. It's one of my favourites for characters, the relationship between the doctor and Clara is complex and the exploration of lying, truth and highlighting the similarity between the master and the doctor is really powerful. Very well done character plotting through the series. It's this series that is why for some Clara is one of their favourites, her arc with Matt Smith didn't work very well, but it did set up this series nicely.

Always enjoy you're reactions, even when you are wrong. You were both very wrong about Name of the Doctor 😉, but you're both very right about Dark Water / Death in Heaven. 😁 This was a great reaction.

With regard to people not remembering the Cybermen, I think that at the end of Matt Smith’s first series, it kind of reset things with the idea that the Doctor’s enemies would forget him, and people wouldn’t remember all the previous alien invasions, because it had got to crazy levels. Then the only time we’ve had Cybermen on earth since then was in the department store in the 2nd James Corden episode, so it wasn’t a large scale event, so people still wouldn’t know who they were.

I love this episode, even though I normally don't like episodes about the cybermen XD But the interactions between all the other characters are so good! And I usually like shows to be character driven, so this really works for me. Not that the plot isn't important, but a good plot with weak characters doesn't do it for me XD And yes, Missy was great casting. I do love her. She's fun evil =D And her exchanges with 12 seem so natural, that I easily buy them being all friends.

__this comment is spoiler free beyond some thematic illusions to future still that you won't get until you watch it.__ THOUGHTS: a lot of people dont like this finale, say it's "another example of moffat being better at penultimate stories than climax's" . I strongly disagree and personally love a lot of the finale's people levy that acusation at. Also generally the accusation is just dumb when considering it's not.. really exclusive to moffat. "the episode before the finale is a lot higher quality than the finale itself" describes every series of the rtd era, and i'd argue Series 3's drop off's are streeper than any within the moffat era. And this episode in perticular to me is an amazing climax to a series that was explicitly about identity from the get-go that manages to basically deconstruct the whole concept of the doctor as a righteous hero that's built up through the series to instead posit its own idea about who the character is that better fits the whole ethos of the era, and the show as a whole. Really glad you enjoyed this series, given it's my second favourite series of the show with some of, in my opininion the most thematically rich and intresting stories in the show, at it's peak maybe even surpassing the best of the super-abstract introspective fanwank you get in expanded media. And i really hope you enjoy series 9 and 10, since they're my third and first place respectively that I feel continue what this era has to offer amazingly. I know you haven't seen any classic who, but i can't begin to tell you how amazingly MIchelle Gomez captures the master as a character. I never minded Simm but Gomez brings that crazed Gravitas back to the role that I don't personally think the Tony Blair inspired Simm master had, whilst bringing the dramatic weight that Simm added to the character. Or McQueen depening on how fan minutia we're being about it. I'm very glad you zoned in on the idea of Hope as a key character concept, idk how far ahead you are, assuming, less a series, but more than a few episodes ahead based on what you've said in the past. but the theme of hope will be very important going forward, keep that in mind. I agree that the pacing of the last 25 minutes is a bit rushed, honestly the whole story['s biggest flaw is that it's a classic who 4 part story forced to fit it's last 3 parts into a single 45 minute story. As in, classic who always did it's stories so that the villain reveal the big part 1 cliff hanger.. only problem is when you make your cliff hanger 45 minutes in. not 25 minutes in like a classic who story would be. it only gives you 45 minutes to do the other 3 parts, not 75. Which is why personally i think they should have allocated the special extra episode legnth deep breath got from them cutting the 13th episode, to this episode instead. which might have given it the proper time to flesh out it's ideas. The main differance between clara and rose, is that both clara and rose are flawed characters, but clara is treated like one by the narrative. Rose became as annoying as she did because nobody ego checked her. 11 regenerating into 12 amd clara being acknowledged as a self centred character did ego check her. Which made it feel intentional and not like a writer learning on the job how to make a female character likeable after writing basially entirely male lead casts their entire career *cough* RTD *cough* I've always found the brigadear being in the same graveyard as damny to be contrived. but i've personally always loved the brig saving the day from beyond the grave. Idk how far ahead you are after editing this buu-uut i'm very curious to see how you feel about series 9, can't wait to see it, and I'm lad you're well

beautiful finale for me. maybe not as good an episode as dark water but my favourite finale since the big bang and my 2nd favourite overall of the first 8 series. i did like the simm master under rtd but think michelle gomez is the best. bit more nuance to go along the crazy evil with her for me. 9.5/10.

Agree so much with 7B. I don't hate it, but it was a clear drop off from previous series. If you loved series 8, you will love even more series 9. It's for me peak Doctor Who with maybe the best episode ever. And just like series 8, it's great character work by Moffat. After Rose and 10, Clara and eleven are mt least favorite duo, but Clara and Capaldo is by far my favorite duo. Looking forward to series 9 and series 10 (which is also phenomenal).

Missy is The Master. End of. It always annoyed me that she wasn’t called by her true name. I get that they did it to keep her true identity secret until The Big Reveal, but after the reveal, please just call her The Master because that is what she is! Rant over. 😊 Great reaction. I’m so glad you are enjoying this series and getting its themes. I think this is a chronically under-rated series. In fact the whole of Capaldi’s era is under-rated. I see it even now, where people still say, “I watched the first few episodes and couldn’t get into it so stopped watching. I can’t stand Clara” etc etc. I get that because I didn’t like Clara either in series 7. But she is such a good fit for Twelve. And Twelves arc is great. In one season he went from asking “am I a good man?” to declaring “I. Am. An. Idiot….passing through…. learning” And he wouldn’t have got there without the actions of this particular incarnation of The Master. Great series.
