Great reaction! There are a couple of things I want to say here. First of all, your last point about the lyrics. Chuck actually was very pro-life, as is reflected in this song and many other songs from the latter half of Death's all too short career. The first two albums (Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy) had more gory lyrics, but Chuck always made a point about those lyrics were only meant to fit the feeling or atmosphere of the music. They were not in any way, shape or form meant as some kind of message. As he grew older and more mature, he started to write more personal lyrics. This became evident on their third album (Spiritual Healing...still one of my favorite Death albums, I recommend any songs from this album, but the title track and Altering the Future are two of my favorites). At the same time there was a quite obvious progression in his technical skills as a guitarplayer. And this segues perfectly on to your point about the guitar solo. One aspect of his playing is his very recognisable style and sound. He got this from being completely self taught on the instrument. He never took any lessons, and had to figure out scales and patterns on his own. But he always strived to become better, and he saw beyond the boundaries of death metal at the time. So not only was he a pioneer at the outset, but he kept expanding the genre to the very end of his life.

His music has stood the test of time, what greater legacy could anyone ask for? His passing away cannot be undone, but we can treasure the music he left behind. I am happy I got the see them live, and happy he got the credit he deserved as a musician even. Not only did he pioneer Death metal, but he was also interviewed by guitar magazines in the latter half of the bands career, thus being given credit for his skill as a guitar player as well. Even in this respect he opened doors.

Ole Morten Persen Yes,I agree! Chuck was pro life, was against abortions or women that used drugs or alcohol during pregnancy that could kill a fetus. He also spoke out against & warned of genocides through his lyrics. It's a shame he is gone! Death was my favorite Death Metal band. And Spiritual Healing was the best album. My favorite all time song is Living Monstrosity.

Excellent choice Mona. One of the greatest bands ever. Also one of the best songs by Death and from their heaviest album. Their whole catalog is awesome. Chuck Schuldiner was an amazing guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/lyricist and pioneer in Death Metal and also just musically talented period. He also had some of the best metal musicians playing in his band on his albums. You should also react to Spiritual Healing, Trapped In A Corner, Symbolic and Flesh And The Power It Holds. Before Chuck passed away he did a side project called Control Denied. From that album listen to the song Breaking The Broken. Really powerful stuff, especially what he talks about in those lyrics. R.I.P. Chuck....

Two of the members from that line-up which are Paul Masvidal (lead guitar) and Sean Reinert (drums) are members of a very unique band called Cynic. I suggest you give a listen to their 1993 debut album entitled Focus. It's death metal with a twist. Check out the opening track "veil of maya" which coincidentially happens to be the name of a well known metalcore band. Superb video as always and loved your unique point of view. Can't wait for your next reaction.

Good reaction, Death is one of the best metal bands ever. Much more creative than most other death metal bands. RIP Chuck. They're also one of the more accessible metal bands since they aren't really as over-the-top as a band like Cannibal Corpse. If you want more Death, I like their song Spirit Crusher. The vocals may take some getting used to, but I think you're ready for it now.

Hell yeah Pink Metalhead! This song and album blew open the death metal scene in the 90’s. It may be hard to hear but the level of musicianship on this is VERY high level but unfortunately tends to be overlooked due to the genre they are in. Lastly, Suffocation “Torn Into Enthrallment. They’re also pioneers of the genre in the 90’s from NY.

Chuck Shuldiner seems like one of the nicest, most down to earth person you'd ever meet. Not anti-life or anything like that. In fact, in many interviews, he explicitly said he is a lover of life and not a hateful person at all. That surpised a lot of people, given the name and musical style of the band. Sure, the lyrics of the first album are very gore-oriented and brutal (wich is good in its own way, and goes well with the music) but all of the following ones feature lyrics that are actually very insightful and interesting. Always nice when people defy categorization. (One of the reasons that make this channel great!) Would love to see you react to the jazz-infused take on death metal! *Mother Man* by *Atheist* maybe? :)

To me, Death is the greatest band that has ever graced metal, in any genre. However, the 2 songs that you have been reacting to, both unparalleled landmarks - they don't serve a proper introduction to the band for relatively untrained ears, even though you liked them. They are just a bit too raw. I can assure you that you will be more fond of them once you'll dive deeper into their later stuff. I strongly recommend for you to react to songs such as *Empty Words* and *Crystal Mountain* in order to get an easier entry to Death and Chuck Schuldiner's brilliant mind. I can assure you will not just appreciate them as "solid", you'd be amazed. Welcome back :)

Death's got quite a few songs like that where it starts off really melodic and kinda beautiful, and then just gets heavy. Destiny, Empty Words, to name a few. And then songs like Sacred Serenity where it's heavy but there's a random beautiful melodic part right in the middle instead of at the beginning. You should try Crystal Mountain. That's my favorite Death song, it's got a cool vibe. It let's you groove throughout most of the song rather than just the beginning.

My favorite lead of all time by any band any where, any genre, any thing is by Chuck Shuldiner and that would on the song Trapped in a Corner. The lead in that song is so freaking epic. The rhythm behind the lead just ties it in so well. It's such a balanced and melodic lead section that it blows me away every time I hear it. So if you can, you have to listen to Trapped in a Corner paying much attention to the lead part and the rhythm going on behind it. Keep up the good work, we love you Pink!!

The vibe you feel at the intro and bridge/solo section of the song appears a whole lot more on their later albums. This is from Human, which is pretty much the midpoint of Death's career, and marks a definite shift to a more melodic, progressive direction. And his vocals get better imo. Symbolic will get suggested a lot, go anywhere on that album and you'll find yourself unexpectedly grooving to that shit, and feeling some type of way when the really melodic bits come out.

You definitely should try something from the last album - The Sound of Perseverance. It's actually more of a prog-thrash-death album rather than a pure death one so it's the easiest one to get into. I'll suggest to start with the classic - Spirit Crusher. And if you thought the solo here was beautiful you MUST listen to Voice of the Soul. It's an instrumental masterpiece.

James Ratty Tim "Ripper" Owens is the singer. I guess you would call it a supergroup.

Yup it was Ripper, I remember now. I checked them out when they started and liked the music but was disappointed by Owens. I always wanted to see him step up into a more creative role and it still felt like he was still singing someone else's music. That was a long time ago though, I'll have to give them another try.

Here's some bands that i really recommend - Morbid Angel, Deicide, Suffocation, Immolation, Atheist, Obituary, Incantation, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Napalm Death, Benediction, Autopsy, Malevolent Creation, Suffocation, Nile, Dying Fetus, Massacre, Cryptopsy, Deeds Of Flesh, Vader, Nocturnus, Vital Remains, Gorguts, Kataklysm, Krisiun, Behemoth, Entombed, Dismember. I started out with these bands and i 'd say that they are perfect entry level bands. There are a lot more but try these out if you really want to get into Death Metal.

Keep up the good work!!! Now if you want to hear some amazing hard rock/metal, you should check out the band All That Remains. Some of their great songs are Forever In My Hands, Two Weeks, Hold On, The Last Time, What If I Was Nothing, Asking Too Much, Stand Up.

When you get a chance you should check out something from At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul album. They are from Sweden and they helped shape the melodic death metal sound by using strong guitar harmonies with brutal riffs
