Death are one of the originator bands of Death Metal that started in the mid to late 1980s. Their lead vocalist/guitarist and main composer Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most influential musicians of the whole early Death Metal scene influencing many bands that came after them. Unfortunately, Chuck passed away from Brain Cancer back in 2001. He is very much revered as one of the Godfathers of the whole genre.

It's definitely not as heavy. But my introduction to Death was "the philosopher" the first time my cousin and I heard it as boys we were in awe. Slower song than what you just heard but not as blistering of a pace. RIP Chuck

That One Metal Guy - Jesus dude. It’s a figure of speech highlighting the fact that many death metal musicians were inspired by Chuck. This conversation is why purists are so annoying and dissuade others from getting interested in music. Whether it’s metal, Jazz, or prog rock. Glad we agree that Death is awesome though.

Death IS the reason the death metal genre exists. GOD MODE CHUCK SCHULDINER! R.I.P. You cannot say death metal without saying DEATH Death's early work, Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy were more centered around, blood, gore, death, doom and gloom, typical horror movie subject material. They are the ' adolescent" version of Death. Everything after Leprosy took on a more philosophical lyrical composition, focusing on life, religion, society, addictions, people's hopes and fears, the human condition, so Spiritual Healing, Human, Individual Thought patterns, Symbolic, and The Sound OF Perseverance are more " mature" albums by Death. With the growing of meanings outside of the gloom and doom; incorporation of the human condition and philosophical messages, the musicianship progressed, and Chuck , being not only one of the early founders of death metal as a genre, expanded to also become one of the early founders of progressive death metal incorporating multiple time signatures, arrangements and overall more progressive and complex arrangements as each album was released. Death is and always will be one of my favorite bands.

Everything Death did was great. Chuck Schuldiner, who was the Songwriter/Lead Singer/Guitarist, unfortunately died at the end of 2001 of cancer. Every album has it's own flavor and they pushed the boundaries of heavy music, especially Death Metal, of which they are considered by most to be the first true Death Metal band. He was kind of like the Frank Zappa of metal. He hired the best musicians around to play on his albums; the line-ups are always different. My personal favorite album is "Individual Thought Patterns". You should react to song "Overactive Imagination" remastered version. Keep rockin'! \,,/

Fabrício Amaro da Silva no doubt, I was broken when I found out he passed and went into a depression about, I bet 2-3 months. His death hit me really really hard. He has always been my #1 music inspiration of all time. R. I. P. Chuck!! The song "moment of Clarity" where he is gripping to hold onto life due to his brain tumor was just so emotional. You can hear it in his solo after Hamm ripps your your face off with his shredd runs and face ripping sweeps Chuck comes in dumping his heart into that lead with so much feel. Probably my favorite solo exchange in any of Deaths songs.

Black dude who is a huge Metal fan, listen to the song with the lyrics next time. Chuck's vocals improve on every album, especially on Sound of Perseverance, they literally "cut" through the midrange on production. "Spiritual Healing" has to be the one that gives me nightmares, "Altering The Future" or "Together As One". I recommend listening to all those albums by them, Chuck gets more positive and humane around Human and later "Progressive Metal" albums they blend with their signature Technical Death Metal twist, but shows flashes of it in early songs "Power of the Mind". "Symbolic" and "The Sound of Perseverance" easily his most brilliant work as a lyricist/songwriter in more forward thinking-positive subject matter, enjoy sista! 😃

You wanted to know more about Death, well here ya go. Death was formed in Orlando, Florida in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner after his first band Mantas disbanded. Chuck was the band's sole original member for the entire longevity of the group and on later albums opted for session musicians rather than a full-time band. The band released their first album, *"Scream Bloody Gore"* in 1987 and is often considered the first Death Metal album (Possessed's 1985 debut "Seven Churches" is also given this claim, leading to much debate). The lineup for SBG included the only appearance by future Autopsy dummer/vocalist, Chris Reifert, while Chuck recorded at guitars and bass. The second album, *"Leprosy"* was released the following year. This lineup included then-Massacre drummer Bill Andrews and bassist Terry Butler (who now plays in Obituary) and former Mantas guitarist Rick Rozz. About a year about Leprosy was released, Rozz was dismissed from the band and replaced by guitarist James Murphy (who has an impressive resume all his own). 1990 saw the release of *"Spiritual Healing"* , which was different in a lyrical sense as this was more of a social commentary than just full on splatterfests like on SBG and Leprosy. Later that year, the band was scheduled to do a European tour and Chuck was going through a lot of personal struggles at the time and felt the tour was poorly organized, but the rest of the band decided to take off without him to meet the contract requirements. Chuck was furious by this and subsequently fired Andrews, Terry, Murphy and the roadies who replaced him. This was the point Chuck decided to recruit session musicians for all future albums and here, he brought Cynic guitarist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert and Sadus bassist Steve Di Giorgio. This combination resulted in one of death metal's biggest game changers in 1991: *"Human"* . This record practically gave birth to one of Death Metal's first off-shoots that combined the brutality and aggression of the genre with elements found in Progressive music, Tech Death. Lyrically, this album continued the social commentaries that were found on Spiritual Healing. Two years later, Chuck again had to change the lineup, this time bringing then-former Dark Angel drummer (and drumming god) Gene Hoglan and King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRoque into the mix, with Di Giorgio still on bass. The result was 1993's *"Individual Thought Patterns"* . While retaining the prog element from Human, ITP went for a lot more twists and turns, while Human was more in-your-face. LaRoque was unable to tour due to commitments with King Diamond and was replaced with guitarist Ralph Santonlla. 1995 saw the release of *"Symbolic"* , one of death metal's most quintessential releases. With Hoglan still behind this kit, this album featured guitarist Bobby Koelble and bassist Kelly Conlon. By this time, Chuck was trying to distance himself from Death Metal, as he felt the genre had been over-saturated with bands not bringing anything new to the table and was getting annoyed by genre labeling and being restricted to that box. Also, lots of people were calling him "The Godfather of Death Metal" and he was very uncomfortable with that and tried to modestly tried to give the proper credit to bands that came before him, including Possessed. Chuck set Death aside and formed a new project named Control Denied and brought in a lineup of then unknown musicians: Shannon Hamm on guitar, Scott Clendenin (RIP 2015) on bass and Chris Williams on drums (RIP 1999), later replaced by Richard Christy (now known as the drummer on the Howard Stern radio show). However, when Chuck signed both Death and Control Denied to Nuclear Blast Records, the contract included that the group make a Death album first. The result was 1998's *"The Sound of Perseverance"* , a masterpiece album in it's own rights and would be Death's final release. With that end of the contract met, Chuck was now able to focus solely on Control Denied. Hiring vocalist Tim Aymar and bringing back Di Giorgio on bass, the band released their debut *"The Fragile Art of Existence"* in 1999. Sonically and lyrically, it continued the direction Death was going in around the time Symbolic and SOP were released, but there was no death metal to be found. Instead was a powerful Progressive/Power Metal sound with Aymar providing clean vocals. Sadly this would be the group's only release as in 1999, Chuck was diagnosed with brain cancer and went through extensive chemo-therapy and surgeries to remove it. Thankfully it was removed in 2000, but in May 2001 it returned and the operation bills had depleted his finances. Chuck's illness worsened when he contracted pneumonia and died on December 13, 2001. While Chuck was recovering, he had begun work on the second Control Denied album, which would have been titled *"When Man and Machine Collide."* He had already recorded his guitars and Christy's drum tracks, but Chuck passed before they could finish. Since his passing there were talks on trying to finish the album, but recently there is doubt that it will ever happen.

Sounds of Perseverance albumn was done when Chuck was going through brain tumor, a divorce plus music Industry was wanting him to go mainstream. Their older stuff like Scream bloody gore, leprosy was more about horror and gore then they started maturing later on. He gets really deep with his lyrics as time goes on. They become real technical and melodic on Individual thought patterns albumn, Really tasteful on Symbolic, the Sounds of Perseverance albumn well It's the greatest metal albumn of all time IMO. Oh yeah Death Human is just balls to the wall right ftom the rip. You asked about nightmarish songs maybe Pull the plug or Zombie Ritual. Like I said their older stuff was horror and gore based until they started to evolve some. Chuck Schuldner is a legend and the King of this genre.. They have an albumn spiritual healing and James Murphy plays Lead as well on Albumn. James. Murphy probably one of the top if not the best death metal lead guitarist in this genre. Another thing about Chuck is he recruited different musicians for his Albumns and they all have a different feel to them moving forward from Spiritual Healing. They are worth looking into more. You reacted to one of their more simpler songs which is still ahead of it's Time. Compare that one to let's say Mentally Blind or maybe Scavenger of Human Sorrow. You got to put into account as well he plays this stuff while singing. Many have came along and attempted but still couldnt hold a candle to Chuck. I promise you if you look into them more you will grow a great appreciation on how great of musicians they are.

Because they were definitely having fun making this album that's why. I think he took a more serious approach afterward with Spiritual Healing and so forth. Sure not on the level of spiritual healing but a major step up from their first album, not dissing the first one is really gritty, grotesque and i love it, if hell has a soundtrack it would be Scream bloody gore, and Hell awaits by Slayer ofc.

Chuck Shuldiner was the mastermind behind Death, an amazing guitarist and songwriter; just a mild-mannered Jewish kid from Tampa, Fl. whose parents gave him endless encouragement and room to grow as an atists and musician. He mastered guitar scales and modes and pretty much created his own brand of heavy metal, the way he heard it in his head, which became the inception of death metal. More complex song structuring, more tempo changes, amazing melodies and leads and solos deriving from "exotic" guitar scales not often used in most modern Western music. As far as his vocal style, I myself being a fan of metal for decades, am not that into that style of metal vocal delivery, but he was far and above most doing the same vocal style, (if you notice you can still actually understand [most of] his lyrics.) As far as darkest song[s] by Death, that's a tough one, as he delved deeper into internal and external moral and social issues and the human condition as his music progressed, so anything from the albums Human through to his final work, The Sound of Perseverance, are rife with blistering observations of a modern world going horribly wrong. But yes, he was actually a cool, easy going, happy-go-lucky guy, I guess those things got to him so much, he found an avenue to release that frustration and confusion, so it is theraputic and cathatrtic...as most music is, I suppose.

Yes I agree with one of the comments below. Bolt Thrower were also one of the late 80s bands who helped pioneer and cement the Death metal music scene. They're from the UK and sing of nothing but war. Which i've always loved. Their original drummer and life-long friend Martin “Kiddie” Kearns passed away in 2015 RIP. For such heavy music it has some awesome guitar harmonies. Check out Bolt Thrower - Mercenary (also album title) But this is their most melodic album and i had a hard time suggesting a song so I went w title track. Nice tempo with great guitar work and his vocals are mostly understandable unlike many Death metal bands.

Chuck of Death basically started the whole scene known as Death Metal..he died of a Brain tumor and he was an amazing guitarist and song writer and all around great person...the world is alittle smaller with him not in it...he just got away from years of managers and people keeping his hard earned money from him and started a new band and things started to go his way and then he went and saw a doctor because of neck pain and head aches and found out he had a Brain tumor and went through treatments and everything and basically because of money the doctors wouldn't save him and he died in his very early 30s.

The Late Chuck Schuldiner was the mastermind behind this band. He was born on Long Island, raised in Florida. the band Death was the start of the sub-genre of Death metal. Most of their songs are of this intensity, but don’t let the sound fool you, Chuck Schuldiner was one of the nicest, happiest guys in metal. If you watch interview clips of him, he’s always got a smile on his face and he loves to talk about different kinds of subjects both in and out of music. Sadly, we all lost Chuck of brain cancer in 2001. Chuck may no longer be around, but he lived on through the fans of his music.

Charles Michael Schuldiner (May 13, 1967- December 13, 2001) American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He founded the pioneering band Death. Schuldiner is often referred to as "The Godfather of Death metal" He was one of the most significant figures in the history of metal. He was ranked No. 10 in The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists book. On his 32nd birthday, Schuldiner was diagnosed with a high grade malignant type of brain cancer that invades the brainstem. Schuldiner received chemotherapy with vincristine. Used in the treatment of cancer, the side effects were harsh and weakened him greatly. He's condition worsened as he became ill with pneumonia. Schuldiner died on December 13, 2001. death is arguably the greatest death metal band ever. the entire Symbolic album, the philosopher, individual thought patterns, the list goes on, but those are my personal favorites. RIP Chuck \m/

Chuck Schuldiner is the Vocalist AND Lead Guitarist AND Songwriter, he was a visionary and a virtuoso and his later releases are amazingly technical, progressive, beautiful compositions (Symbolic)... but anything off of Leprosy (Open Casket, Pull The Plug) or Scream Bloody Gore (Zombie Ritual, Mutilation) are subtly musically sophisticated but sound like they were scraped from the bowels of a decaying corpse. And the best part of Death as a band is you're going to find rabid fans whose favorite Death albums are all different, there is no one definitive favorite Death album!

Well said Sir, totally agree. All 7 albums are great in and of themselves and all are different from one another. You can hear a constant progression of Chucks abilities, opinions and preferences in his music.

Found Death on their third album, Spiritual Healing. Their early albums were primitive, but laid the ground work for what would become one the most most progressive death metal bands ever. I suggest some of their later work, and his last band Control Denied.

This album came out in 1988, and I purchased it while overseas in Germany. I had heard the band's earlier work, but this album was a departure for them, as they introduced more melodic structure in their songs. It got even more avant-garde garde later on in the 1990's. My favorite song on the album is the title track...leprosy. Death metal had its origins from thrash metal, first wave black metal, and hardcore punk. It started up in the mid 1980's, with bands like Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Kreator. Later came pioneers of the genre, such as Obituary and Death. Albums I would recommend: Celtic Frost- To Mega Therion Slayer - Haunting the Chapel (EP) Kreator- Pleasure to Kill Destruction - Infernal Overkill Obituary- Cause of Death

My favorite band ever ! Kinda hard to really grasp who a band is when you hear their earliest work but with Death and Chuck's writing you can feel his vision of going beyond what's expected and in their last 2 albums I think his maturity as a song writer and his guitar playing are next level. I'd put both (flesh and the power, symbolic) in my top 5 metal albums . Watch Death live at Eindhoven. We should all bow and heap praise on Chuck. Also, love your channel so much. Glad I found you. Glad I found Chuck. Holla. Ps Comment #666 😎

Yes! I love Death (the band, lol) but I'm more of a fan of their last four albums, which were infused with Progressive Metal rather than being pure Death Metal. I would love to see you react to Spirit Crusher, Flesh and the Power it Holds, Scavenger of Human Sorrow, Zero Tolerance, and 1000 Eyes. As for a similar band/artist, Ihsahn is another huge one in that scene. Some awesome songs from him that I recommend are Invocation, Called by the Fire, Homecoming, Scarab, Emancipation, Barren Lands, and After.

I remember the first time I heard Death I was hooked on their "Scream Bloody Gore" record. But once I heard the rest of their discography... It took some time to get into. Next thing I know I'm singing a lot of the choruses and such. It takes time and a lot of listens to really appreciate the music. I now have their whole discography and plan to buy more merch!

The vocalist/guitarist is Chuck Schuldiner (Shul-dee-ner) who has been in the band from the beggining to the end as there have been a lot of legendary line-up changes through each album. The first 2 albums (Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy) were very much Thrash Influenced, later on with the album "Human" they have displayed much more technical playing, "Human" and albums like Piece of Time by Atheist or even Cynic's "Focus" have been a foundation to many Technical Death Metal bands. Even though Death is classified as Death Metal, I still think it is much more than a typical Death Metal band, they are classic within the genre of Death Metal, but also a classic within Metal. My favourite album is "Symbolic" as it is full of emotional soloing, meaningful lyricsm and melancholic atmosphere, I would suggest checking out "Without Judgment".

The style of vocals featured here is often termed "Death", "Harsh". or "Grim". In most settings, a singer will use their vocal cords to sing, shout, or even scream, with an implicit tonality or key. With this sort of vocal, the singer is using the false vocal folds, much as you would when you whisper. This technique can yield several different sounds, from the low, bellowing growl, to the cutting midrange sounds you hear from Chuck S. in this track, to the piercing high shriek of a black metal vocalist. All of these harsh vocal techniques are an acquired taste, and a frequent response for a newcomer is to touch their throat and feel some discomfort. There are ways of making these sounds without any harm to the voice, and some extreme metal singers, such as Mikael Åkerfeldt from the band Opeth, jump back and forth between clean and harsh vocals in the same song. There is a whole road ahead of you, if you begin to listen to extreme metal. You may have picked a fairly challenging band to start with.

So... the drummer from this band in 93-95 was Gene Hoglan, who was also the drummer for a band with one of your favorite vocalists... Strapping Young Lad. I've been meaning to check them out more. I believe the two albums he was on were Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic, and if you react to "The Philosopher", you'll have something in common with Beavis and Butthead.
