I think what separates a game like Death Stranding and the sequel from Alan Wake 2 at this budget is that if you were to show this trailer to someone and ask them to explain what the game is about they would genuinely be lost for words or filled with ideas that would be vastly different from any other person you ask, even though every aspect of the game is being executed at the highest levels of the industry. Alan Wake 2 is well-produced, well-written, and well-performed to tell a story that warps a base reality we're all comfortable with. Death Stranding drops you into a world and story that only ever matches reality in the most superficial ways and uses your most basic expectations and emotional reactions to make you feel and think things that are so different you've probably never felt those emotional combinations before or thought those things before. There are so few major releases I can think of from the past 5 years that had the ability to disgust me and make me laugh at the same time like my first time seeing the infant in Sam's throat do a thumbs-up from the first game or seeing the hair plucking scene in this trailer right after all those crunchy autopsy sounds only for it to end in a Three Stooges physical comedy bit.
