Sept, 16th, 2022. Mine Exploration and Hiking with Tom and Julie.
This abandoned mine explore starts and ends with a great hike across the incredible Ibex Dunes in Death Valley National Park. Once at the mine site we find a huge wooden ore bin in great shape just outside of the open portal. While exploring the underground workings we find massive drifts and stopes on a steeply angled mineral vein. There are some nicely timbered sections shoring up the less stable parts of the mine. We had a lot of fun on this explore and we hope you enjoy the video.
Here are some links to other mines that we have explored:
• Incredible Abandoned M... Great hoist room and elevator at this talc mine
• 5 Level Mine - Steep L... 5 level mine with beautiful timbering and lots of artifacts at this Nevada silver mine.

You can make gold out of lead and at least a couple other things that I've seen you do, I bet you could coax a little gold out of a nice talc rock. Exploring a talc mine looks as exciting as watching grass grow! Considering the dangerous elements in Death Valley talc mines, some which haven't been mined in nearly 100 years, they should be left alone since there are far more interesting and safer mines elsewhere to explore!
@TomandJulieMineExploring

That's almost the exact comment you left on our last video, Eugene, after which I presented evidence of talc mines that are anything but boring. Of course you never replied to my comment. Many of the talc mines in Death Valley were worked up into the middle 1970's. Almost all types of mines contain dust that is hazardous to one's health when breathed in. When hard rock is drilled and blasted, which is just about all mines that we see, it creates fine dust particles that often contain silica, especially gold mines with quartz veins. Breathing in that dust can cause silicosis, which is very similar to asbestosis.Mine exploring is a dangerous hobby, but can also be exciting, which is why people enjoy doing it. Here is a link to another talc mine that we very much enjoyed seeing. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJtilM1_tLfXiGw.html

Totally Awesome! Was pretty cool getting a shot of Julie in that big "room", really showed the size. The last shot of her could've been better however. Would have been tops if she was holding the fuse cross ways to her mouth like she was biting it, and have a pick in her hand. A little caption above her head that read: Who's the boss? I really enjoy exploring the talc mines. They usually have great timbering and fun layouts. I don't know about them closing because of asbestos. I know talc can contain asbestos, but, almost all mines have some danger with breathing in the dust in them. Gold mines usually have silica dust which can cause silicosis. Lead mines have lead dust etc. etc. Here is a link to a fun talc mine to explore, much more exciting and fun than watching grass grow. 😀 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNuFirSgmrDHlXk.html Thanks for the comment, Eugene!

There were sawmills in different parts of California that rose right along with the need for mine timbering. There is a lot of information on them that is interesting. Thanks, Larry!👍

Hi Tom and Julie! Of all the talc mines I have seen on KZfaq this one looks to be the most stable. It sure is big! What years would you say this was worked? Thanks for bringing us along!
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
This mine is quite stable for a talc mine. I would guess it was worked from the late 40's to the early 70's. That's just a guess. Thanks for the comment, William! 👌👍

Yes it is a big mine. I don't know of any plans about it. Thanks for watching from Germany, W. Husker! 👍👌

Tom, with the recent findings of Talc being linked to cancer, especially in women, think you should be around Talc mines? Great video by the way! Allan in Wichita.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your concern for our safety, Allan. Talc is probably not the safest thing to be around. I don't think limited exposure will do a lot of harm, at least I hope not. I'm sure if you worked in a talc mine everyday for a long time, or used a talc powder for a long time, you could be asking for trouble. Glad that you liked the video and thanks for commenting!👍👍

Huge mine is many ways. In some parts of the world the Steel cable is used to "saw" through softer rock, like talc?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
I have seen cable saws in a granite quarry cutting large blocks. I'm pretty sure this was a drill and blast operation and the cables were for slushers that scraped the loose rocks down to the haulage. I could be wrong though and they cut have been cutting cables. Thanks for your input, David! 👍

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that mine was carved out by chainsaws! Very blocky, unlike any other talc mine I've seen.

It was very blocky all right. It must fracture along natural faults lines to be that square. Thanks for the comment, Lesley!👌👍

I guess the lapse between adventures was due to being lost in the dunes. 🤔 Were the dunes even there when the mining was going on? The lapse' were due to my not clicking on the "bell" and "all".🙃
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
While that would be a good reason for a lapse there has not been a lapse. We've put out one or two videos per week for a long time. The dunes have been there for quite a long time. Thanks for watching! 👍👍

I thought for a second there a mouse was hitching a ride, but it was a pack strap swinging and for some reason squeaking. I guess I could have made up a better story about a huge rat that was in my pack eating my snacks. Lol. Thanks for the comment, Jeff! 😄👌

Tom at the end Julie said something a bout a ladder were you in a mirage to think that .Have ?? The mine you were in the is talc in a solid or is it in a powder form when they mine it was this the type like baby powder if so must be very dusty ⛏️🏜️🏆
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
I must have been seeing mirage ladders. Maybe we were in the desert too long. The talc is in solid rock form which is very dense and heavy. It is used to make all kinds of things from paint to body powder. This one was not really very dusty. Thanks for watching and commenting, Case! 👍👍

I'm stopping to recall my perception of what seems like the main adit is parallel to upper stopes for all haulage. I imagine that's apparent, but it came to me on one particular raise ramp to a hole blown through to the stopes above. Of course then that ramp built for what they dropped. I don't know enough about extraction to wonder if they used a mucker with cars or something bigger. Doesn't it seem they would still be mucking out that much material today, if it was a regular mucker?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
I believe this operation used rubber tired LHD vehicles on the lower haulage and cable operated slushers up in the stopes to move ore into the cuts to drop down to the haulage. There was a lot of chewed up slusher cable in this one. In any case there was a lot of material moved in this mine. Thanks for the comment, Rick! 👍

I was wondering the date of that mine since they were using some modern techniques. 40s makes sense. Is it in the park?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
It is in the park and I'm guessing it was worked more recently than the 40's probably into the 70's. There were several talc mines in the area that were worked in that period. The video link in the description is a good example. Thanks for the comment. Eric! 👌👍

How do you choose which mines you're going to explore each day? Do you live near that area? Do you camp for a few days at a time? Do you already know of all these mines or just fine them on Google Maps?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
All good questions, Denise. We travel in an RV for eight months of the year and generally stay for a month or two at different RV parks in areas that are near known mining areas. We have been doing this for several years so we do know of a lot of mines that we have previously researched or been to. We also have several contacts with whom we share information about mines, both general areas, and specific individual mines. We research mines using digital topographic maps like Caltopo.com, for instance. Google Earth can also be helpful. We also drive through mining areas and look for obvious features, like waste rock piles, that can be seen from a long distance. Are you looking for mines in a specific area? Thanks for the queations!

I've become interested in going to these old mines and taking any wood that's not constructed into anything and selling online. Considering there's a huge market in 19th century wood. All these sites are abandoned right so why not take and clean up these sites.

That would very quickly make you a criminal with federal laws being broken. Mines on federal property are protected by the Antiquities Act of 1906. This particular mine is also in a national park where the removal of anything is prohibited. I know you're just kidding and trolling for a response, so there you go.
