Well, here goes. This is NOT the best tutorial I've ever done, that's for sure. I'm not much of a tutorial guy, but this is a "learn as we go" video! But we successfully changed the string on this crossbow and lived to tell about it. Even upped the speed a bit, I think, with this fancier string!
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!

Now, I am not sponsored by anyone. I am a free agent. I experiement with different types of gear, but I'll tell you my honest opinion about everything out there. I am not sponsored by Excalibur or Scorpyd...read on:
Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps ol' Bunjie around 300fps. Is Bunjie retired as of 2021?
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains. This crossbow was a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of it as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0) is a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, another gift from a different Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Although I really liked what I saw online, I would not have even tried a Scorpyd given that no shops near me carried them. This was sent to me new, free of charge...with the only stipulation being that if I didn't like it, I would send it back to that FOB. After spending some time with it, I am convinced it is, in fact, the right crossbow for me in 2021, and I look forward to showcasing this crossbow in future videos.
So, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
Once again, this channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

One thing I love about most of the scorpyd bows, you can change your old strings without a bow press. I had to tweak one of my cable on my ventilator the other day. Easy to do, just used my long rope cocker, pull up on one side of the rope cocker handles and slipped a plastic covered screwdriver in between the limb and cam😎

Just a couple suggestions to try from the peanut gallery: The cap/plugs on the x-over cable; tape them in place before hand so they don't fall out. Second: to keep the new string on the cam, wrap the string around the cam and wrap a piece of tape around the cams and string where the string exits to hold it in the groove.

I felt faint and Jen yelped when we watched you pull that cocker and the hook jumped the rail. The offset on the string (over the rail) made us both shudder. It was intense!! Strings jump the cams all the time and this is the way to do that trick. Dont do that trick again...PLEASE! LOL Dont pull that much tension over the scope either. Same results...jumping the cams. You would need a press to get it back on, if you jump the cams. FYI. The best way ( I dont care what you saw on some video) is to simply use the standard cocker and jamthe screw driver in with the help of a second person. Forget that one handed stuff. Now... I f you want it to be one person... Leave the bunjie cocker alone (remove knots) then put the cocker rope over the butt, instead of in the rope notch. Now shorten the rope enough to reduce the string travel and simply rope over the butt as you would have done over the scope. Difference will be that you are not pulling the cocker rope up and over the scope (de-rail method) and you will get the same effect in relaxing the bow string. With a little adjustment, you will have a perfect press that you can simply carry in a small pouch. What do you think about that? Didi I explain it correctly? Get my drift?

All good, I left the cocking incident in there just for you. If we do this again, though, I'm just going to pull the string up by hand and she can put the screwdriver in. The hooks btw are what scorpyd uses in their videos too. But it's so easy to pull back, shouldn't be a problem by hand.

There is a MUCH easier and safer way to do this. Try out something called a "Slave string". You take the screws and insert them in each of the threaded holes on the cams (the purpose for those threaded holes) then put the slave string on each screw (there's a loop on each end) this takes tension off the main string and allows to be easily removed. I did it in a mere few minutes my very first time.

I cringed when the hook jumped the rail. Had a flashback lol. 😳 I saw a video of the Field archer just pull the string up by hand and put the screwdriver in. Pretty sure it was a DS420 too. Have also seen where guys have the screwdriver either dipped in rubber or a rubber hose over it to save the cams from getting marked. I can change the string on my swat with a screwdriver as well. Pretty easy with the anti-reverse crank. Was pretty nerve racking the first time I did it though. A little gun shy I am. A couple more times and you will be a pro. Best part is you did it right and it shoots! Congrats! 👏

It's always good to have a spare string even if it is the factory original. Sadly the new Scorpyd crossbows require a bow press. Warnings about this are listed on the new models (Deathstalker LT & Tremor). Wonder if this was a liability or safety concern Scorpyd is trying to avoid/address? Excalibur, Mission, & Scorpyd having this feature (no bow press required) was a big plus in my mind!

I saw a video showing you use a small screw driver on the scorpyd deathstalker on one of the pulleys and the string comes off. it showed it can be done by one person. The field archer did a review on your crossbow last year if you care to see the 10 second part of his video showing where he put the screw driver around 3:35 mark.

Yeah if you don’t have a partner the only other safe option would be to use a bow press. While some people can do it themselves not everyone has the strength to do it alone. Example I personally couldn’t do that alone with out possibly damaging the bow or myself. So I would get a press for compounds myself.

I think the risk of injury was more to the crossbow than either of us. It's a 150 lb draw weight. Hardly any weight at that point and will probably do by hand next time. I actually get more nervous changing the string on Genevieve's 285 draw weight...now THAT'S under load 😆
