Pat, you have more Knowledge and Experience in your field, which combined with the Ability to teach it, makes you more formidable and passionate than most people whether they have a PhD or just a phd don’t have it. Thanks for sharing with Us

I’ve seen tail chewing quite a number of times at different barns, completely different set ups, none consistent. In one case it was clearly a foal who was just obsessed with being under her moms belly. When she wasn’t feeding she was chewing on moms tail. The other cases were suspected to be boredom by their owners but when I found the horses feed was made up mostly of pellets I suggested they start including longer stalks of hay in the form of baled hay straight out of the field rather than flakes (cubes) where the stalks aren’t very long . This satisfies a horses natural need to forage on longer grasses. I can’t image Chinaco actually wanted his tail chewed off but rather, stood there as a social thing while the other horse chewed. That’s my best observation.

Have never written a comment before, but, the tail thing and mane being chewed off or out by another horse hit home with me. Had some horses in a pen with a mule and manes and tails were coming up missing. Thought culprit was the mule until all the manes and tails were gone but one old horses. I think he liked doing it and it was a social thing with the others. It takes so long for them to grow back! Took him straight to a sell and problem solved , thank you very much

Good to see you got home safe and sound. Tail chewing, never had it happen myself; boredom? Calves are shocking at chewing horses tails also from what I understand. Agree about tapping the logs. I recently put a log under a gate and my youngster has hit it a few times so far. He will learn to concentrate on where his feet are eventually and pay more attention to where he is placing them. Anything that does not eventually learn not to hit is feet on logs, is not a horse I would like to entrust my life to by riding (or driving) it!! I have an ornament here, a standardbred. He does not get that he owns back legs at all. Pat, that tiny ear/head flick at 2.:40. and it shows a few more times in your video. My youngster has been doing it as a wind up to a temper tantrum if I do not let him eat red clover, or walk too fast or whatever else he thinks his opinion is important about. I see your bloke is doing it as a "I would rather not....." Is this a 2 year old thing, an PRE thing, a temper thing...? I have to admit to not knowingly noticed it before with other horses I have worked with of any age. Have I been unobservant, or is it only some horses that do this?

Horses chew tails from a lack of phosphorus. It happens when a large portion of a horses diet consists of alfalfa. The calcium/phosphorus ratio is completely off. Hair contains phosphorus and they eat other horses tails to try to get it. My neighbor had a mare that ate her geldings tail. She fed alfalfa exclusively and refused to believe that was the problem. Her brother who lives next to me and I feed straight grass hay and have never had a problem with horses chewing tails.

Hope you had a great trip down under. Regards to the tail chewing, don’t know why it happens, but it happens in Ireland too. Stay safe you guys.

I have read lack of forage being the most common reason for tail chewing. We have plenty of grass hay here in Kansas, so not usually an issue, just see when a horse is hungry. If you're only feeding hay pellets instead of baled hay, is usually when horses might chew other long fiber like tails or manes. Why he backed up for it other than enjoying the "grooming" ??Free-choice minerals (not just salt) might also help with tail-chewing.

I enjoyed the video. I've never owned a tail chewer so I have no idea why they do it. I have heard all sorts of theories but as I have not had one do it, I really don't rate an opinion on it because anything I said would just be a guess. As to why a horse would let another one chew its tail? Same thing, I've not owned one but since you asked now I am curious too. Hopefully somebody knows.

I've found its usually a young horse that will chew on tails, I usually chalk it up to them being bratty babies.

My baby colts got their own corral or else they chew on them riding horses tails. Blocks don’t last as long in their corral either as the riding horses do, and there is more riding horses than babies. I got a question, I got this free three year old mare than only bucks in the barn and that’s why I got her. And she’s good at it as I’m not. I don’t drag a leg or nothing and I’m calm but she just has my number the first time I get on. (West river South Dakota) thanks!

Howdy sir this is off topic from your video, but I need some help. I have a 15 year old Tennessee Walker great riding horse except he spooks when he sees any wildlife such as deer, elk, he spins around and tries bolting and it’s gotten to where it’s unenjoyable to ride him. I got my 12 year old quarter horse I use to rope and cut and hunt off of, but I would really like to be able to hunt off of this Tennessee Walker and also have something my wife can ride. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I really enjoy your videos I watch them whenever I have free time. I’m a ranch hand/cowboy in west Texas on a 115k acre ranch and I can’t have this horse bolting and trying to throw me in the middle of nowhere with no phone service.

Александр Македонский when you work with cattle you end up opening and closing lots of gates on horseback to save time. This just helps get the horse balanced and consistent in their movements.

@@PatnDebPuckett thank you for the spooking tip . I wanted to tell you that I was working on the back up and forward movement and releasing my breath fof stop . Alfo working on leg pressure fof turning . When we were out riding and we had to pass house where shrubs prevent seeing in the yard . They have several eventing dogs and they come out and start barking. My horse didn't get spooky going past and returning didn't get spooky. She was listening to me. Thanks for that lesson

Sir, one idea maybe that you're colt is wormey, he's rubbing. I'm 65 years old and my dad fed livestock for a living and he taught me that when you have a horse that is rubbing his tail that could possibly be that he's wormey. Just a thought.

There's a plethora of reasons... Sorry big word, all I know is I've never seen them chew tails out in the pasture/open... I've would attribute most of tail chewing and all the other bad habits to boredom/confinement while they're in stalls...

Work with the flag and tarp. When you ride out, do so at the trot. If the horse begins to spook, meet it with the leg to keep him straight and ride right up to whatever he is trying to spook at until he is standing on top of it.
