Picture this, Someone puts you as guarantor for their mobile loan and then defaults. The debt collector then decides that they will harass you on phone, calling you with multiple numbers until the loan is paid. This is the experience many Kenyans routinely face since the proliferation of mobile loan apps nearly 10 years ago. The trend is now denting the image of the loans that have provided a lifeline for many businesses. Here now is Waihiga Mwaura with our special report, 'debt of shame'.

The creditor to be in court that is unacceptable with disrespect to a church leader and marriage "wewe ndio pastor mdogo" just from a single small loan.It's ironical "THE PASTOR WILL LEAD PRAYERS ON CREDITOR BURIAL" and young campus students on internship are the ones enrolled on call desks broke,with no working experience and no financial life experience just talking mannerless to their elderly.

It's now 1 year and counting since I defaulted on my loans on over 10 companies. Eventually the debt collector gave up.

Now that you are alive, you are making your FAMILY, COLLEGUES, RELATIVES, BOSS, IN-LAWS AND CLOSE FRIENDS feel the pain of a loan you took for your own personal gain. Then they charge a huge penalty when you dont pay on time and they keep charging the penalty daily until the day you will pay. So if maybe you took a loan of 2500 then you delay to pay it for lets say 2 or 3 weeks you end up paying like 5,000. That is why people default.

That's how they fail the whole system. Sometimes you are even admitted and they start contacting everybody in your phonebook without bothering the side of your story. Atlast when in position, you won't bother paying back since they have maligned your name in shameful manner..
