Third in a series about applying to PhD programs! How do you even decide where to apply? This video takes you through decisions like how to pick a PhD discipline (even if you're interdisciplinary!) and sub-field, how to find potential PhD advisors / supervisors /PIs, how to find specific PhD programs or departments, and things you should mention in a personal statement or statement of purpose for your application. Plus, how do you pick a university to do your PhD and does prestige matter? How should you think about things like location? And what happens next?! This advice is most relevant for STEM and maybe especially Computer Science PhD programs, but a lot of it is definitely broadly applicable.
I post academic advice videos every FRIDAY! Consider subscribing so that KZfaq's algorithm thinks I'm great and will show these videos to more people!
The first video in this series was about whether you should get a PhD at all: • Should You Get a PhD??...
The second is concrete advice for PhD applications: • PhD Application Tips! ...
What do you think the next video should be? Let me know in the comments! #gradschool #phd

This was exactly what I followed to choose a PhD program, fitting to my research interests (STEM + interdisciplinary). I'm glad I did this! I'm excited to commence my PhD program this fall. I recommend all prospective grad students, especially international students to watch this. Thanks so much, Casey. You earned a subscriber! :)

This was such an excellent video!! I'm graduating with my masters in December and I really want to purse a PhD afterwards. I already have a document with facts and deadlines about the programs I'm interested in. I really want a PhD in linguistics (preferably Spanish and Portuguese) and I want to do comparative research in regards to those two "sister" languages and teach them both as a college professor.

Great video! Would love to see a video on how to prepare for the interview once conditionally accepted. What questions to ask and how to stand out. Also, how to make contact with professors whose labs we may want to join! Thanks for all the great information you’re providing!

Thanks! So I have a new video coming out on Friday that touches on some more SOP stuff, though I realized I don't really have any specific SOP advice beyond what's been touched on in the rest of these videos :)

Thank you for your videos! After almost 20 years teaching art K-12, your advise has helped me realize that PhD is for me. It has also helped me narrow done my focus for Diversity & Inclusion for Art Ed within the Curriculum & Instruction program and I ma even thinking about more specific focus with that area for research. Lucky for e my National Art Education Association publishes research quarterly that I follow. After looking into so many schools, I have narrowed it down to my top choice based on the program, faculty, tuition costs and ability to work remote and opportunities for fellowships on campus.

I really like the way you explained the process. Few questions- 1. What would help make a good decision when the faculty is new and is going to start their professorship 6 months prior to your application? 2. You mentioned research bliss, what is following your research bliss? Thanks!
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 жыл бұрын
There can actually be a lot of benefits to new faculty! Sometimes they have startup funding that means they have more freedom in their projects, they might need more new students than others, and also they can sometimes be really good advisors because they remember what it's like to be a student. You don't have to make a decision yet, so you can always compare your conversations with them to other potential advisors if you have options. And by research bliss, I just mean your passion, and the kind of work that makes you happy. :) Good luck!!!

Thank you very much Prof, I will applying this fall. I have two questions. 1. Does having a publication increases one chances greatly? 2. Who is a competitive applicant? I normally see this on programs' website that they look for competitive applicant

Hello Professor Casey, Thanks a lot for your videos, they’ve been of tremendous help. I have a couple of questions: 1. How do you determine advisor fit? It’s easy to go to a faculty page to ascertain the professors working in your research area, but how do you know if the one that would be a good fit for you ? 2. Are there significant advantages applicants with a masters degree have over those with just an undergraduate degree? 3. Does it make much difference if one studies at an R2 institution versus an R1 institution? Thank you
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD Жыл бұрын
1. I have a whole video about advisor fit! 2. In my field, not by virtue of having the degree, but it means you're more likely to have research experience. 3. Difference for what?

Really helpful information, thank you so much. Quick question: how likely is to get accepted in a good (lets say top 10) phd program when coming from a small (and not focused on what you want to do a phd on) university? How much does your undergraduate degree matter when applying to a phd program?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 жыл бұрын
There's no way to answer that! Where you went to school is only one small part of your application, and people value it differently. I personally don't see why it matters at all.

In a PhD program? I would recommend looking into exactly what you want to do, find the faculty who are doing that, and then see what programs they're in. But UX design is often part of computer science, human-computer interaction or human-centered computing, design, or information science.

Hello casey. If I apply for many programs in the same university does that be considered as I am not sure of what I want to do exactly . for exemple a master in biochimistry and molecular biology and a phd in biochimistry and Molecular biology on account that I want the PhD. What do you advice me professor?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say! But it's entirely possible if it's a different department they won't even know that you applied to the other. But I can't say how it might be perceived. If you reach out to individual faculty you might ask their advice on program though.

Do you have any good resources to look for certain phd programs? I've been searching for certain programs for what I want to study, but the results are varied across websites. Are there any sites that have all phd programs available on one site? Lol. Or do you just have to look up a bunch of colleges and see what their programs are???

Here is my video on SOPs! 5 Things to Do in a Statement of Purpose for PhD/Grad School | PhD SOP + an example (mine!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJtdn9V0xq2wf6s.html But I’m afraid I don’t have advice on application research proposals since I don’t have any experience with those. (They’re not very common in the U.S.)
