After building a bot completely from wood my buddy suggested we make one from CAD and resin 3D print a final part. The question is, was it worth it to resin print this bot or is it a total pain?
I came up with a new bot design and he rebuilt the robot in CAD. We looked it over together and did a few edits then printed it out on my Anycubic 3D printer. With tons of sanding and a cool paint job the end result worked out pretty nice.
I hope you enjoy this resin 3D printed Robot build!
Thanks for visiting DR Toys, and as always...

Another great build! I don't care what you use to build robots, I just like seeing new robots. Have you ever considered making a robot like what was shown in old Warner Bros. cartoons or in the Paramount Superman cartoon "The Mechanical Monsters"? Those were always some of my favorites.

I appreciate how you kindly approach the topic of of 3D Printing, knowing how some people will react. Between the highly toxic nature of the materials, learning curve, and the prohibitive cost of entry for a great many creatives, your choice of words was sensible and sensitive to the community. Regarding the build, Great job! Love both of these, and the retro/iron giant vibes the give off. Beautiful colors as well. Also, that track playing over the glamour shot at the end was decent. I always enjoy your videos and hope to be in a position to build, and help support content creators such as yourself, some day when I graduate from college and have income again. I really like the promotion of creative work, it’s fun, good exercise for one’s brain and fine motor skills, not to mention a great balm for one’s mental well being. Thanks for doing what you do. A grateful observer.

I literally started my channel with the idea of encouraging people to not be afraid to try new things. For most people whether or not to resin print isnt a question. Kitbashing is great for creating custom things that are completely unique, 3d printing is for making things that other people have designed. Not everyone has the skill or time to scratch build something cool.

I'm a buy the file and print and paint kinda gal. (For now) I'm still trying to master the filament printer. 😬 I will always love scratch building/kit bashing. Hollowing out a resin builds DOES use less material but it doesn't decrease the print time. The UV light cures each layer so if the layer is big or small it doesn't effect the print time. I love the quality of a resin print but there is something magical about hand making it out of reusable materials. I kind of prefer watching the latter. Keep up the great work Doc!

I see no problem with using the 3-D printer, it's cool for some builds and could help you out with other builds when you can't quite find the right parts you need for scratch builds. Plus when you do your scratch build you can then reproduce it again if you ever want to make a copy for someone, and not have to scrounge up hard to find parts. Plus like your Big Mac guy you built and your Mario on the plant you could do like a hard version of the burger box or the drink cover and not have to worry about it getting damaged over time. And this little robot 🤖 came out totally awesome. Super Cool 😎 👍👍👍

3D Printing can be fun and it can yield gribblies you may not be able to find in other places. I like to think it's a great way to add to a kitbash rather than completely overtake it, but either way it was a great video thank you!

3D printing is just another tool. I think the important part is doing the design work. If the design is something you like enough to make multiple copies of, then you could work with your buddy to design something that you would be able to cast in urethane, which would save on a lot of the cleanup work for each robot.

I love these "knuckle-draggers". Chonk-Bots are cool, and these have just the right balance between cartoon and retro sci-fi vibes. The widespread fear and loathing toward 3D printing is something I don't fully agree with either... It is a tool that requires skill and forethought to master and I'm sure you get a lot out of using it for prototyping / short-run sale items and just thinking / designing differently. It doesn't take the skill out of model-making any more than a limited resin garage kit figure model does and modellers love those... I imagine pipe-chomping 'trad-dads' in the 1960s were equally dismissive of their children's styrene kits because they built models from balsa wood when they were young. Although there are people who buy ready made STLs rather than design their own but, 'hey'... Every modeller is differently motivated / differently able.

I always enjoy your videos, but the whole love affair with 3D printing leaves me cold. Personally, I think 3D printing has enough fanboys that it doesn't need my contribution. I've stopped following a number of artists, such as Kathy Millatt, due to their over-reliance on 3D printing. I just find it uninteresting, especially when it seems like 75% of the process is mucking around getting something usable. If it's something I can't even attempt to make without an outlay of thousands of dollars and a lot of time, then it doesn't interest me.

I totally see your point. For me I love to build something from scratch because it totally amazing to see what I can build with my hands. Rest assured I still got plenty of cool builds bouncing around in my head just waiting to be built from scratch!😅 Thanks
