Thank you for your help. My mom , when she was still alive, wanted so bad to go into assisted living. She couldn’t take of herself, even though she was independent, loved to read, and still could do her cross stitch, she was a diabetic and got confused with her medication. After moving her into assisting living, she regained her happiness because the stress was gone and she lived out the rest of her life at peace 🙏🏻

An excellent video! I am currently living in a Senior Independent Living facility, which is not the same as Assisted Living. One thing I have noticed is that sometimes adult children overestimate their parents' abilities, probably to try to save money. We see people come in who obviously need to be in Assisted Living instead of Independent Living. Soon they have to move again. And I can tell you, moving when you are older can be terribly traumatic. I think a try-out period is a wonderful option.

GREAT and HELPFUL video!!! Thank you so much for putting this together. I wish I had this a year ago when I moved my mom to a AL facility. I made so many mistakes then and now have to find a new facility for her.

Many elderly people would prefer just to be taken out to tea by you or someone else they know, instead of living in a place with lots of facilities.

Making my first facility visit this Monday. These tips are so helpful. Since my parents and I are CA residents, I found the facility information on the CA Department of Social Services website. Actually, I just Googled and it took me to their website. I have to admit, reading the "Facility Evaluation Report" isn't always easy to understand. Overall, I was able to piece the story together by reading the prior complaints reports. Thanks again for this valuable video resource! P.S. CA Department of Social Services allows you to enter an email address and be on a mailing list each time the facility you are researching has a new notification of complaint/report.

I appreciate this video, it has some good pieces of advice but I think it misses some key components and has misguided elements. Transition trauma is a real thing, moving someone three times or more for a trial period probably isn’t the best idea, especially someone with dementia or MCI. A lot of communities offer a 30-day written notice to end a lease. This can be especially helpful if it ends up not being the best fit. Most communities that have many different levels of care (which I am guessing you are talking about including skilled nursing type care) usually have huge buy-ins. Sometimes, those higher care levels are full when your loved one needs them, and you lose money because you have to “sell” and choose another facility. Also, if a community doesn’t offer a short-term stay/respite stays, it is most likely because they are full. They will want to save apartments for people looking at longer term stays (which is why a 30-day notice comes in handy). Every situation is similar but has unique differences. I recommend a geriatric care manager familiar with senior living options or working with someone to help you find placement that does not get paid by the facilities they recommend to you (if it’s free to the family, they charge the facility thousands in placement fees). It may cost the family, but that can bring piece of mind to the family. With that said, not all placement agencies that are free to families are bad. Local ones tend to be the best. This is a good way to help you feel like someone is truly looking out for your best interest. There are so many elements to senior living and it can be tricky to navigate! I appreciate you shedding light on a complex topic and part of life.

If I understand it correctly and/or regulations have not changed, assisted living facilities are not regulated (by State and other credible agencies) and skilled nursing homes are strictly regulated, many of the points Sofia has provided could ,similarly, apply to skilled nursing home placements when seeking the ideal situation for a loved one.

This can be a bonus. My father's sister wanted him to move into a high-priced mainstream assisted living facility. Instead, his one wish was that if he passed away first, my brother and I would take care of her. My 2nd. mother is Brazilian, so when he passed away at 99, we immediately flew her to Brazil where my Brazilian wife had lots of property in North Eastern Brazil in a small village. We ended up building three homes on the property. 1) My wife (the main caretaker), my mother and my wife's mentally unstable uncle. 2). My house & 3) A home for our live-in caretaker and her children for the present and future when my wife and I get older. All were paid for in cash with no debt, so we did not have to pay huge amounts of money for an American assisted living facility. 😎fyi, the exchange rate in Brazil is 5 to 1 in favor of the dollar, so health care is easily affordable.
