I remember when this story broke in our town it was shocking. He was always the " lovely chap" in the post office , the one you would trust and go to. It was a shocking fall from grace but so glad to hear he's come through the other end of it and now putting his experience into helping others

The worst thing that can happen anyone from gambling with bookies is that you might win, cause its only a loan with bad interest rates.

Went to hear Tony at a gambling awareness talk last night in Cork - he is so open and honest about the whole situation and addiction, and seems like a really great guy. He is doing these talks to schools and around the country to all, and is really brave and providing a great public service to all. Gambling is so accepted by society but causes issues for many people and their loved ones, and all the bookmakers and online sites (including online gaming) are there to take all they can from people. Unfortunately, regulation is still way behind where it should be.

He is a amazing person, sorry it had to go that way but the amazing thing is is that he is willing to sit down, be honest and I hope it keeps others away.

The main reason there is so much misery with gambling is you simply can't win ,bookies have experts for everything plus the machines and most of it is bent sadly .

Media and journalism is full of addiction and this company and its shows are sponsored by gambling companies fare play to this man for hopefully getting to the other side but gambling addiction or any addiction has nothing to do with money or amounts of money but interviews, interviewers are obsessed with amounts but gambling addiction has nothing to do with money it's an emotional illness

gambling is destroying people's life's in Ireland and there is no help only everwhere you go bookies and casios and the amount of people committing suicide due to gambling is off the rickter scale.if someone commits suicide with alcohol problems and in system,they blame alcohol.with gambling its hidden to the end.

One person died from magic mushrooms and that was enough for the government to criminalise them. Insanity.

Well i bet and lose the majority of my wages most months. This month i lost the whole 2k after being up 3k at one stage. I staked a quarter of a million in 10 days. Childs play compared to Tony 10 i know but its still a disaster.

He should have been given 10 years. Usual loser gambler story that they all hide behind, the "addiction", spare us the addiction victim act.

What about the people in the post office he stole off aswell did he pay them back?
@rossimac3 жыл бұрын
@@maxpower2963 According to an interview given with the BBC recently, he is still paying back debts. I can imagine whatever deal that was decided (if any) between all parties would end up with him paying back no where near close to what he stole, but it's likely impactful to his day-to-day life. And as Niall says, the profits did not benefit him from the book sales. From the way he talks here and other interviews given to raise awareness to the issues, I believe him.

@@maxpower2963 actually Paddy Power paid back the balance to An Post, some was covered by insurance and PP made up the difference. Of course there was an NDA signed to withhold the details, PP trying to soften the blow and backlash for being so reckless. Tony was the gambler, but PP enabled it.

@@maxpower2963 he stole a registered letter from myself and my hubby containing a cheque for a very large sum of money (in the tens of thousands) intended for our son to buy a house or land on which to build a house. Tony O`reilly signed the letter off and it was only that we spoke to our son that we realized he had not received the letter or cheque. Luckily we were able to cancel the check, but found out that O`Reilly was already in the process of setting up a bank account using our sons name.
