Adam - a former horse racing tipster - shares his gambling addiction story in this special Q&A video.
Today - 21st March 2021 - marks the one-year anniversary since Adam’s last bet, so I wanted to find out what the first few days, weeks and months were like for him after he stopped gambling.
In the video, Adam discusses:
- How an innocent football bet on his beloved Sheffield Wednesday got him into gambling
- His attraction to horse racing and the thrill of picking a winner
- The pressure he felt to provide winning horse racing tips to his Twitter following
- How his gambling started to spiral out of control after he began to chase losses
- How he hid his gambling problems to friends and family for more than 2 years
- The stress of having 14 payday loans
- How he hit rock bottom during Cheltenham Festival 2019 and opened up to his parents
- How running, walking, reading, watching Netflix, and gaming has helped him recover from gambling and fill the void of time and urges to gamble
- How important using Gamcare, Gamstop and Gamban was for Adam
- Featuring on Sky Sports Racing and At The Races during Safer Gambling Week
- Champion jockey Patrick Mullins congratulating him on his recovery from gambling
We also discuss:
- THAT Gordon Elliott photo
- THAT Envoi Allen accumulator bet
- The ethics of bookies closing and suspending winning accounts
- How to make gambling safer
- Tackling football’s relationship with gambling
- How Adam has found watching Cheltenham Festival 2021
- Owning stakes in Millennium Racing Club
Adam helps raise awareness of the dangers of problem gambling through his fantastic page called ‘The Fun Stopped, I Didn’t’.

speaking as someone who has lost every penny through gambling, the worst thing an addctive personality can have is a big win because you crave it time and time again and go through thousands upon thousands to try and do it again, but it never happens

Thank you so much; love horses and racing, it’s also an intellectual game, - looking at form, pace, trainers, jockeys, sires, dams, past. Performances, the history, the romance - the social part - and the high you get…for me cold stop - - from Breeders Cup - ugh - all the favs - and feeling so stupid after losing bets….it’s a distraction from just being alive and dealing maybe with things we don’t want to face….otherwise so tempting it’s a very seductive sport

Its the discipline in being able to take a few to several loses without chasing the loss that seperates a winning gambler from a losing gambler..... its not a natural disposition.... but it is absolutely required if you want to keep risking and winning

Great interview. Problem gambling feeds on lies so great to hear how you've opened up about your struggles. Shows strength to say this is an issue for me and though I may have made mistakes in the past this is how I'm going to deal with it going forward. Really positive stuff & hopefully will inspire others suffering to get help 👍

Cudos for speaking out. It sounds like Adam didn't fully appreciate the fundamentals of betting such as variance and potentially a suitable staking plan so that he can ride out the losses. Picking horse selections on form also introduces human cognitive biases. As a horse punter myself I stick to a statistical arbitrage system and I don't deviate, win or lose. I only bet where I have the edge in a particular situation and positive expected value in the bet. Well done Adam for speaking out, addiction destroys lives and I can appreciate your experience.

It takes more guts to stop gambling than to put a big bet on, has anyone else had a horrendous experience gambling in terms of dry spells ? when i compared my experience with other gamblers they seemed to have ups and downs , whereas my experience was 90 % down turns . it was living in the twighlight zone.

How many alcoholics think it’s a great idea to sit around in pubs and talk about alcohol and watch people consume it. How many drug addicts think it’s a good idea to continue to expose themselves to environments where their addiction is rampant. Gambolling has the biggest relapse rate of all addictions. This guy still has the gambolling mindset - the next horse the next race the next win. He’s just relying on his will power not to actually place the bet in reality. He’s still doing it in his mind. Will power is known not to be a great strategy. He seriously needs to move away from an industry causing so much havoc to so many peoples lives and stop kidding himself his inability to do this is not also part of his addiction. Very sad and not a good message to those people desperate to break away completely. I won’t actually place a bet, I will just amerce myself in a sport that totally relies on gambolling and is all about betting. Umm … Famous last words.

I disagree with this. Of course racing has a strong link with gambling, but so do many other sports which people can all watch without actually betting on. There are many stories within racing or you may follow a particular horse, you don't need to bet to enjoy it.

Gambling on horse racing is entertainment. If it becomes something other than that, you have a problem. The biggest red flag that you cannot win more than you lose is all the tournaments. If I am winning at just a 4% ROI, I make deep in to 6 figures silently every year. I don't need to enter a tournament or win a tournament, because I am already a winner. But what if I'm really good at horse wagering, but still lose more than I win? Let's say I am at -2% ROI, that is fantastic against the pari-mutuel takeout. What can I do to exploit that? Enter tournaments. I don't have to win more than I lose to get my entry fee back, I just have to be better than the other guy. And that's why tournaments are so plentiful. Pro gamblers come & go in horse racing. People have an angle they play for profit for years sometimes, & then just like that it stops paying more than they lose for no reason. There have been a few people who made millions in horse racing wagering as a pro, & they all had the same thing: exclusive data. The 2 guys who made millions in Hong Kong had data no one else had. Once everyone else can access that data, the million dollar advantage is gone forever. If you don't have access to exclusive meaningful data, you aren't going to beat the 20% takeout consistently. "But the Pros gamble on the Pick 5, 15% takeout". Fine, that is still next to impossible to beat over the long run. Horse racing is fun. Wagering the outcome is fun. But it is not a source of income. Think of all the professionals working in this industry doing their daily grind. Why are they not using that knowledge to win more than they lose gambling? Because the takeout are just too big. If you think are ultra sharp with statistics, data, & correlations, learn commodities trading or options. You can make a meaningful profit with publicly available data in those. But not in horse racing. Why are the "expert" pickers on the broadcasts still working? They eat sleep & breathe horses, & they still have to work a job not cash tickets all day. Horse racing is entertainment & insurance for when the next big EMP hits. Don't let it be more than that.

I think I’m on the edge of addiction, as soon as I can deposit I wanna do it, as soon as I lose i wanna win that money back. Problem is I just love that winning feeling and unless I gamble on sports that’s on TV I have little interest in it. Gambling is all I do most days and I don’t wanna stop because I enjoy it and it gives me something to do but I also don’t wanna lose my life savings and I find myself betting larger amounts
