I had the 924,924 S,924 LE MANS,944 TURBO and the 968 Coupe.These cars are the sole reliable and affordable to own and to maintain cars ever made by Zuffenhausen.Unfairly called "PUTZFRAUEN PORSCHE"!! Porsche will never come close to this simple concept which in the bitter end saved their existence.All the hypered SUV's are not worthy to be called sports cars at all. Better old school, than modern miseries after all!! Great report and thumbs up to your communicational qualities as always!! Greetings from Germany ;-)))

George from the Porsche Club here. I've been looking after this 968 for James for a wee while. My first Porsche was a 944. Couple of things: 1. Beware a car that hasn't had regular maintenance, even if it's low mileage! Mine had barely been used before I got it, it was low mileage, but a nightmare to own. James one is high mileage but brilliantly maintained and it's been no trouble. 2. I used to think Dodo Juice was expensive. I didn't realise how ridiculously economical it is - the dilution ratios are amazing. It actually works out at brilliant value especially with James' discount code.

My wife just asked me “what is this like the British Doug Demuro?” I thought about it for a second and said absolutely not. This guy is way better. I don’t even live in the UK or have access to many of the cars you review, but I watch nearly every one (when I can). You’re immensely entertaining and deserve the millions of subscribers that other reviewers have and I’m confident you’ll make it there. Sidenote if you’re ever on the east coast of the States you’re welcome to my E39 M5, 986 Boxster S, Cayenne GTS Manual and maybe I can convince my dad to let you have a go in his CT5V Blackwing

Great car - was seriously considering one 4 years ago. Eventually went for a 924S - not as fast but much cheaper to buy and maintain and with a more "vintage" feel. Has cost me £600 a year on average on maintenance (including a cam and balancer belt change). Very reliable.

The 968 is a great car to drive. It is very practical with its large compartment in the back plus extra space on the rear seats. If you have a sunroof you can take it out. Also the petrol consumption is really reasonable. The CS , to me , was a compromise as the 968 did not sell well. The car had almost no extras and looks really really blank inside. It was cheaper as the standard model and is quite loud inside. If you can find a good example don’t think to long and get it. On the long term good examples will become rare and more expensive. 😊😊👍🏻

My family had a Mitsubishi Gallant back in the late 80s. It had 4-clinder 2-litre with a balancer shaft and It felt like a Six Cylinder engine. It was so refined. That car was so luxurious feeling. It was also decked out with more electronics than I'd ever seen having been in Renaults the few years before. The Gallant looked and felt excellent. Luv and Peace.

When we did the PcCoty in 93 the white 968 K reg club sport won, and was my fave by miles ! If you just want a nice peddle yes a cooking version for £13k is good drive/investment, but the CS I'd argue is cheap compared to say contemporary SZ or Integrale, and a fabulous taught peddle and I suspect they will be £100k plus in 12-15 yrs, while the cooking versions are still a third of that or less.

Never had a 968, but had a new 944 Cabriolet. As you mention the 968 was introduced in a recession and Porsche were in dire trouble worldwide. The 944 Cab listed for over £42k and the Turbo Cab was £55k IIRC. Porsche GB reduced both the Cab and Turbo Cab to £29k new, to clear stocks for the 968. £29k was a tax bracket at the time for company cars, the next level above was even more punitive. A friend had the choice of the Cab or Turbo Cab and he choose the Cab, purely as the power was always there. 968 was a good looking car and these days is overlooked.

968 was originally on sale around the time I first became licensed. It was the first Porsche in which I had plopped into the driver’s seat. Unfortunately, I did not have the means to buy it and settled for a Chevrolet El Camino with a mild 5.7L V8. It was good for 200kph and felt like the world was ending at that speed. The “little four cylinder” Porsche felt like a living room at 220kph, with room for more, up to 250kph or so. I love how they look and my admiration for the 968 has endured for the last 30 years.

Absolutely spot on! Love my cobalt blue 968 as well. Your interior is marvelous - the grey with blue piping is stunning. On mine, it's basic black - although in the US, it is one of only two cobalt blue coupes with a black interior out of a total of 31 in cobalt. One maintenance item to mention is that when struts fail, a good upgrade is to cut the tubes, weld on adapters and drop in Bilstein B6 inserts - better performance, and cheaper in the long run.

In the german classic car mag AutoBild KLASSIK it was mentioned that the 968 was the best Porsche ever built, quality wise. Not even the 911 and 928 of the 90's had that vault like feel to them. It was Porsche engineers who were there at the time saying this in retrospect.

Problem with all Porsches (in Germany) is that you have to find a workshop that even works on it. And those are either Porsche dealerships or specialized classic garages.. both of them are very very expensive and often take their time.. so if the heater breaks- you pay 2000€ and your car is out of commission for 3 months.. I would recommend staying away from any Porsche unless you have a good place to bring it to- if you have such a place- or can do it yourself the cars are marvelous

Very very thorough information James! The Porsche transaxles seem to be particularly shrouded in misinformation that gets regurgitated over the years. I hadn't heard about the small fragile torque tube being the main reason for the balance shafts. I understood that it was to cancel out secondary vibrations to allow the engine to rev higher.
@darrellhunt5214
@darrellhunt5214 Жыл бұрын
As a long term (Aug'03) 20yr Sport owner, I believe there are 2 balancer shafts - but happy to be proved wrong. They rotate opposite to the crankshaft ditection, thus negating unwanted vibations. The engine also lost the 2.5kg harmonic shaft when Porsche redesigned the engine from the 944 3-litre. As the 968 engine internals are lighter, the engine can rev slightly higher and its "natural detonation harmonic" (6,850rpm) was moved above its rev limit (6,500rpm), so they saved another 2.5kg of dead/unrequired mass from the engine. The balancers probably assist the torque tube/vibration as well. 968 is a good all rounder, back seats are no different to many other Porkers (911's, 928, 944) really, so you buy it in that knowledge as opposed to E36 M3. Pretty cheap/reliable car to own long term and with 4 european trips for experience, it can go all day without issue but good fun on a blast. Just buy one that hasn't had a million owners and been poorly looked after. I'm owner no4 for my Sport & I know every nut/bolt/service item/issue on it - better than any specialist or OPN. Happy trails.

Great video, thanks JayEmm I have a 1993 968 coupe, love it to bits! I owned it since 2008 and yes the standard cars are so much better value! If you fancy a more track focused suspension/brakes, the only difference really (the stock one is 30 years old by now!) there is a huge selection in after market product now. It was my only car/daily driver for all my time in Edinburgh, now it has lived a more relaxed life in Dubai for a few years due to the traffic culture (or lack of). I wish I had the Targa roof ( I had that on my 1985 2,5 ltr 944) it makes such a big difference, but as you said the range on that big fuel tank is a game changer! But I do disagree on one thing you mention....I think it is a lot more practical than a BMW M3, you can lower the backrest's and the you have a lot more room than a normal booth ( and the legroom in an old 3 series isn't a lot better than a 968) Just my thoughts 🙂

Here in the States, a lot of 944’s and 968’s have had their engines swapped for LS GM engines and they only weigh about 40 pounds more than the original 4 cylinder. I haven’t had the pleasure of driving one, but would love to. I think both cars are beautiful and way under appreciated. Congrats on getting a good one. Another comparable is the Mitsubishi Starion and its Chrysler variants. Funny that, they look even more like a 944 than your RX7 example….and Porsche paid Mitsubishi to use their balance shaft system for their engines.

High mileage is no problem on those great cars. Best advice I can give is find a good dealer that knows the car. Even if he is more expensive he will know how to look at it and will kow how to fix things properly. In my opinion and experience those are relatively low cost maintenance cars if you do regular services. Belt has to be replaced from time to time but not every 4 years as they last longer than people say. But don’t wait more than 8 years I would say…

Even well above 200kmh it was stable and confidence-inspiring, surprisingly quick for only 163 hp. I ended up selling it for a BMW E46 330CI convertible, a worthy successor, noticeably more modern but nowhere near as special.

Jay, I've got an idea. You focus on a lot of older cars, which is great, and the reason I subscribe. There's one common issue amongst cars of these ages - fading black plastics. How about you look at some of the more exotic solutions other than plastic paint or dye, and rather than attempt a full detail, just choose a bit of faded trim on an older car and restore it. Do this in several vids with several products and compare the results in a separate vid. When you declare a winner, ask them to spon you up, on the understanding that each future car gets a bit of its trim restored during the vid. They keep getting exposure, we get to see the results and you hopefully get the repeat revenue from their support - Tri-Winnage Equilibrium! (Its not Latin, it;s just bollocks - but you get my 'drift').

Another superb video, Jay. I've always been a fan of the 968. A far better choice of model designation than that of the originally planned 944 S3! A neighbour of mine, whilst living in Germany, had a brand new one in Guard Red. The last time I saw a road worthy Porsche 968 was at Goodwood Revival in 2018, a black Clubsport with red decals. Superb example. The last 968 I saw was sat on someone's front lawn covered in green moss sadly. A Clubsport too, I was incredibly tempted to knock on the door and offer to rescue it!

If I compare Finnish prices in Euros, this 968 runs about 18-25k€. With that money and same era in Finnish market, I could be able to pick C36 AMG, C55 AMG, SLK 320 AMG. If tuning up this 968 engine, it's possible to get 360-400 bhp and then it would be compatible against AMG domination.

It's a totally different sort of car to those AMGs. The AMGs are luxury sedans that are fast (the SLK drives like a sedan even though it's a 2-seat convertible 😆), the 968 is a well-balanced, responsive sportscar. Completely different driving experiences.

@@jsquared1013 Yeah I do get it. For me it's just hard to suit the spent euros / dollars for something. Like with 20k you get this or E55 AMG. Totally understand that Porsche 968 is different car. But for comparisating I think E55 might be faster on any track, goes faster on line, and maby gives a better quality as well. I like Porsches very much. I hope to get multiple one of them, but sometimes I just keep myself asking, that if I do spent the x money to this - would I feel sorry about it or can I carry the Badge with honor :D

No air con obviously so with that big glass area and black interior you will cook with the sunroof on. Maybe the best steering of any car I’ve driven. Went to a 964RS after this. A very well researched video, and mega-kudos for getting your hands on a regular 968 and a clubsport as well... Top notch journalism mate, but James, chill! You looked nervous, like you were on the balls of your feet, you were speaking way too fast. You sounded like the motoring version of one of those voices at reading the small print at the back end of a radio advert for a financial product. It strikes me that you were worried the video would be too long, but with the amount of leg work you'd evidently put into this you could have spoke at 7/8th or 3/4 of the tempo, cut in a bit more driving footage, and made a feature length out of this, and it'd still have gotten a "like" from me, and many others.

In the American market, you were spot on. The second generation RX7 is a perfect competitor, even if I perpfer the first generation. I'd add the second generation 300ZX as a proper comp as well

Hi Jay, I enjoy these Declassified episodes that you do. I haven't looked through the comments section, but I'm assuming that people would love to see you do this series on all the cars that you have in your garage. While I am biased, I'd like to see one on a BMW, more specifically, an E60. I believe that while these cars were controversial when they were first released, the design was ahead of its time and is probably more appreciated about 20 years later from its debut. I'm curious to see/know your viewpoint of it, as well as other Bangle-era cars. I think they have all aged well, maybe apart from the pre-facelift 7 series E65.

The balance shaft was because of the massive 3.0l displacement for a 4 cylinder engine meaning large piston unbalanced forces - nothing to do with the torque tube.

fantastic car - I bought it too in cobalt blue new from Porsche Cambridge but the 968 Sport model which was much better - bigger wheels on the sport and lighter. I also owned the number plate 968 S. Also if you took out one of the fuses the milometer stopped increasing!

You are a dangerous person to listen to, you make the most outrageous proposition sound reasonable. I could actually afford a 968! Sadly (or luckily) my wife prefers an auto and probably couldn’t get out of a low slung sportster these days. Thanks for the heads up on the CS, I remember back in the day, the local Porsche dealer (Sytner?) had a dealer day on the 968 CS and the roads around here were awash with pastel coloured CS’s. If I had been tempted, it would have been one of those, but you have saved me from that mistake. Do they still have those ridiculous titanium wheel nuts? That must save at least 11g per wheel.

I don't particularly mind the 928-style pop-up headlights, although seen from the front there are some odd 993-style curves around them. Then new rear treatment wirh the tidier spoiler and soap bar tail lights is quite successful. The most gorgeous feature of the car is the side indicators/fog lighta integrated into the new front bumper. The most egregious feature is the redesigned rear quarter side windows, whete the rising line that would meet the rear hatch at the c pillar on the 924 / 944 glasshouse has been deleted. What were they thinking? That one change makes the car... droopier. I actually prefer the convertible version of the 968, chiefly for this reason, but also because I think it looks quite elegant in its own right. I was never a fan of the facelifted 944 oval dashboard either: what happened to having the rev counter in the centre of the gauge cluster? Still, I have massive respect for Porsche transaxles, but I do have to wonder if a GR86 is a better car, and for 20k it is very hard to ignore a 987 Cayman S or a 996.

I've done 10000 km per year in my coupe since owning it for 5 years. It's heading up for 180000 miles and has been super reliable and affordable. If you are buying, go for a maintained car. Don't worry about the miles. The club sport is too pricey these days for no good reason in my mind, certainly if you intend putting the miles on. The suspension sucks for daily use and the 968 is best for long fast journeys IMHO. Brakes are, I agree, a little weak. I might upgrade one day. Oh and on long journeys, you really want aircon. The cabin get's hot.

With reference to your request for suggestions on which cars to review, may I suggest the Vauxhall Senator? The last version before they stopped making them of course. I had the Carlton 2.6 CDXI but always wanted a 3.0 Senator. I think the police used them in many parts of the UK.

Old car ownership can be a pain. I'm trying to find why my intercooler pump isn't getting power at the moment in my XKR. There is power at the fuse which I have replaced twice now but they kept blowing for some reason. I should think there is damage to the wire somewhere but it's not easy to find.

In the U.S., another great alternative if you can't find one is a same era 300ZX. An old C4 Corvette also is a compelling option, though less practical and kind of less attractive. More modern options similar to the Jaguar would be a HSV/GTO from the early 2000s. Especially with manual, it's a better car all around. Jaguar really missed out not offering a manual option on that car. And of course, the Honda S2000 GT. Everything a small light fun car should be and for sure a future classic.

Thanks Jay for the tribute to an absolute classic. Two minor corrections: 1) It's a common misconception that the Club Sports came with a stiffer suspension design, but in reality the only change in that regard was a lower ride height. 2) It's not "quite good-looking," it's absolutely mindblowingly bloody gorgeous- technically speaking : )

I've always loved these cars. I've wanted a 944 Turbo for over 10 years. To be more specific a 944 turbo done up like a 924 carrera GT. But the prices turbos are going for now is insane. 25k for a half decent one. Just doesn't make sense.
