I have to tell you what a blessing you recently were to me. Over four years ago I got into minimalism and we transformed our house. We sold it and moved into an RV. The clutter built up over time to the point that our couch and kitchen table (and everywhere really) were full of clutter. I was feeling hopeless of getting it cleared and then the other day I watched a couple of your videos. The next day I decided to do 5 minutes of clutter clearing. Mind you I hadn't slept well the night before and I was standing in the kitchen crying because of how tired I felt. But I did the five minutes which turned into 2 1/2 hours. We now have our couch and kitchen table back! It was both a blessing from God and from you. Praise God and God bless you and your family, Dawn. ~Sharon

BTW, inventory includes time users, not just space users. I've had to train myself to say no when asked to take on too many volunteer and social obligations.

Timely- I just officily retired an hour and 24 minutes ago I had a list of things to accomplish by retirement and decluttering was one of them but you have shown me how important it is to realize this is a journey and not a destination. So, as I make plans for my fun, and yes, work filled retirement decluttering g will be an ongoing part of the journey and not the end. I had been harsh on myself because the decluttering was not completed but my friend Dawn says it is a journey so along that route I will happily travel with less guilt

That tells me that other then the essential things (things like a pot to cook in and toilet paper) I only really need to hold on to those 10 things! I had a platter my husband’s grandmother had given me not long after we married. It was part of her first set of dishes. I mentioned to her during a visit that I didn’t have a platter and she opened her cabinet and handed me the platter. I truly felt accepted into my husband’s family with that gift! One of my daughters dropped it and broke it about 15 years later. I was heartbroken, but soon realized although so special and valuable to me, it was just a thing and I could always get another platter. My daughter was so sad, and it was an accident. She is my valued and treasured daughter and cannot be replaced.

When I decluttered my clothes 3 yrs ago, I decided to inventory them after. This way, if I want to purchase something, I make sure I either really want it or if I think I need/want something in a certain category. Also, whenever I wear something, if I don’t like it anymore, I get rid of it right away, instead of waiting. I need to declutter shoes though, I keep thinking I’ll wear certain pairs & never wear them! Lol I use to buy a lot of makeup & skin care. I have an inventory of that because I did overspend...I’m really doing well now & not buying until I am using the last product of that category. It’s unreal how much I kept buying because of a sale or just really wanted something. I’ve made better choices over the past few years. My problem is other areas of the house that I need to declutter & get rid of. I can manage a few areas of things, while other things it’s chaotic! I just need to do it in other areas of my home! Lol

"The stuff taunting us." Yes! I'm beginning to recognize that some things are not just space hogs, they're a psychic drain on my spirit. It's not a matter of letting go, as if I am the one clutching THEM, it's a matter of liberating myself from their hold on ME.

I’ve been on my minimalist journey for 7 years now I would say, and there is probably still at least 30% of my things that I wouldn’t be sad to see “spontaneously combust”. I guess that’s my sign to go further 😅

I have to say, I did a pantry declutter and reorganization and every item that went back in my pantry got written down on an inventory sheet (with expiration date) . It really helped having to write every single thing down because it made me think twice about how much I really wanted to keep some things. It took a while to do it all but it was so worth it. The phrase "inventory you have to manage" really came to the forefront while doing that.

I found the free e book you are showing here from The Minimalists...looks intriguing! I will try to read it. Although I really prefer watching your videos, as you have a very simple way of describing the tips and you show examples of what you are talking about through your great (and probably very time-consuming) editing. I learn so well from you! It's been almost 3 months since we purged over 40%, put 20% into "Quarantine" (which NOBODY has missed!) and I now have such a useable "work environment" (aka my kitchen) and the freedom I am experiencing by how little time it takes to clean is such a gift...THANK YOU!!

Just 300,000? Gee I have probably 5 times that!!! Got a whole 24x15’ room full of art and sewing stuff that probably has 600,000 at least! (All meticulously organized as well.). 🤪 //So my project last couple of days was to rework the cabinet above my washer/dryer to better use the space and eliminate the dark hole of junk just stashed in there. I re-purposed bins freed up from other decluttering projects and got busy making new containers for stuff like rags, sponges etc. I ended up with like over 50 cleaning rags!!! Holy moly. I think every old wash cloth I’ve ever bought in the last 40 years was in there. Yep purged everything except what fit in one sm plastic bin. Great video!

I get inspired to tackle some portion of my inventory with every video. I have been watching them for about 6 months. Each “area” that I am attacking loses 30% to garbage and 30% to give away in a quick touch/toss/take away. I FEEL so much mental relief each time that it keeps me moving through my stuff. I agree with your percentage guess. Definitely more than half can be purged. I lost track of the video with the empty room but that inspired me to EMPTY the extra bedroom. It is 80% empty. A mattress leaning against the wall. Board games going through THAT purge and the closet. Guess where I find a kid randomly playing quietly alone. In the empty room. You are so right about that too! Thanks

Thank you, thank you!! This is exactly what I needed to hear to deal with things that are hanging around and not adding value! On another note, my daughter recommended a monthly make-up box subscription to me. She's a great salesperson, "Oh Mom, you'll love it you get to try different products and it's only $xx per month....." I almost did it, but just thinking about all those little containers coming in to my house every month gave me anxiety! I just couldn't do it! Thanks to you and your encouragement to keep the number of items in my home under control!! I hope you are enjoying your summer!!

Someone asked my husband and I recently, if we had a fire in our home, what would be the first thing we grabbed. We said "each other and our son". I just need to make sure my family is safe. My cousin's house recently caught fire and they lost everything. Her husband and son were buried in rubble in the lower level and the fire burned the floor out from under my cousin as her and her daughter were escaping from the second floor. I had that in my mind when I was asked that question. So did my husband. Sorry for such a bummer comment but it really put 'things' into perspective for us.

I've cut down on my fantasy items - art materials, but keeping some is aspirational and enjoyable. :) For me, sentimental items fall into two categories, objects and projects. The objects are minimal, but the projects, which have been seriously curtailed, are still sometimes overwhelmingly challenging - the sorting, the scanning, etc. One day at a time, one day at a time. Also, I've already warned my kids that they will have to determine the fate of items that I can't bring myself to toss; there won't be too much and it will be easy to go through. Full disclosure, my digital chaos is the most daunting - it's a project. :) Thank you, thank you, Minimal Mom!

I do this every year. Started in 2016. I keep an inventory in my bullet journal. I used the categories and subcategories as described by Marie Kondo - but my subcategories go into much more detail. This is a great exercise. I question everything. I haven’t used those 6 checkboxes you came up with here. But, those thoughts factor into my decisions to keep or to pass it along. Each decluttering round feels good - then another level of “clutter” reveals itself. We have 102 cooking utensils and tools. 59 pieces of flatware (I’m missing a dinner fork.) 292 movie DVDs. 61 books - including cookbooks. My wardrobe including shoes, bags, scarves, outerwear total 137 items - and I already know of a few pieces that need to go now. I do this inventory throughout the year as I’m working through decluttering and cleaning. I struggle with items that are sentimental - table top decor items. I’ve taken pictures. I’ve written stories about the. I’ve decided I have to use them somehow or set them free. I should try the spontaneous combustion thing. Honestly - I’ve thought of breaking the items and using parts of them in a mosaic. A planter or box. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had been struggling with my clothes and how to let go of the ones that no longer fit or I actually had never worn. The fantasy self category struck a cord with me and by applying that filter, I was able to get rid of four large garbage bags of clothes in a very short time. I’m sitting here stunned that it was so easy to do. I feel lighter and a certain amount of relief. Thank you so much!

Gorgo, I don't know that I have tips. It is just a continuous process. If I take meat or what I have listed out I cross it off. If it's my last item of that or I see it's low it goes on my next grocery list immediately. There are certainly times I miss things but I just routinely go over it again to keep up.

Gorgo, your comment made me think. Maybe instead of a written list you could create a semipermanent list with magnets. When you have an item in the freezer place a magnet with the item written on it on one side of the freezer. Move the magnet to the other side when you remove the item. Some advertising magnets are easy to cut up and cover with labels. Hope this makes sense and helps! 😀

Since watching you and a few others we have probably already reduced our inventory down to about 1/3 of what it was. I could probably let go of all of the craft/art supplies except the crochet materials(side job) and that would significantly reduce the number of items. I’m working on my older kids still they are teenagers and feel the need to have collections of random things. My little ones we have got their inventory pretty well under control thank goodness. I just want to say how life changing it truly has been to actually live more simply and minimal.

I moved 3 months ago. In that time, we have unboxed everything that we need for daily life. I purposely left in the boxes anything that was not needed by someone in the house over this period. My basement has A LOT of boxes that NO ONE has gone into to find something particular. Guess where I am going next for purging! I cringe at just how much there is, but I am also ready to lighten our load. Just to think...we moved it, and now I am going to get rid of it. Arrrg! But better late than never!

I love that ! Spontaneously Combustable 😍🥰😍🥰😍 Most of the the things that I’m saving as sentimental items could spontaneously combust and I would be thrilled that I wasn’t having to save it to make my mother happy. She loves to save things and it makes her happy when we receive the things that she’s been saving back for us. Some of the things miraculously just disappear but some of them she would notice or ask me about if she hadn’t seen it in a while. It’s not her fault she’s like that, her mother didn’t save anything of her childhood and was constantly going through her things ‘decluttering’ for her so I can see how that would make someone want to save everything of their Children’s childhood just so they could have something to look back on. I’m so fine with pics of items so I don’t have to hang onto them. I gave away over 40 outdoor black trash bags full of stuff last year and I still find things here and there that I can let go of.

I started following you last year around the beginning of being on lockdown and I was so completely stressed and already suffered from anxiety. During the summer I think I would say I decluttered almost 50% of our things in our little house. I can’t explain the weight I felt come off my shoulders and the decrease in anxiety attacks. I removed so many of the things I thought where keeping me “happy” for example these floating shelves I loaded up with meaningless decor I struggled with removing them because my husband made them but instead we made a beautiful accent wall with shiplap and the clutter is gone not collecting dust! It is truly so freeing! Thank you so much for your videos I honestly feel like each one points out something in my life as if it were made for me. It’s practical minimalism that I can do. And personally I think I could declutter another 50% easily.
