Inflation=government printing money. -Milton Friedman. When people try to over complicate things, they are hiding their lack of understanding.

Though I agree with much of the commentary, I am disappointed that more emphasis was not placed on the misuse of CPI by politicians and others. I believe that it is the misuse of CPI that is at the heart of Carlson's remarks...even if he does not understand the its source or real purpose.

Inflation is most certainly not 2%, herein lies the problem. Many including myself have noted much higher prices. Solution for all is to purchase assets, if you can afford it.

anyone familiar with the metric refers to it as the "CP lie". Hedonic adjustments and owners equivalent rent make it fictitious. And why do you state 2% imflation is ok? all inflation is bad from a "store of value" point of view.

@@BasicEconomics the gist of it is that tiny mile is trying to drive down cost of delivery. Right now costs are high for companies like uber. There are also brooding issues with the labour union, Canadian union of postal workers. That union caused a delivery company that was paying workers $21/hr to pack up and leave. Most of these companies are not yet profitable, although deliveryhero is coming close. I think the argument for robotics can improve those chances. Furthermore I don't think humans can be replaced, but IMO delivery workers should be directed towards higher value orders.

Try being any kind of building contractor right now, the scarcity of materials, cost of fuels, lack of labor and the labor you can get wants FAR more in wages because ALL of their costs are way up too! Now factor in that the area you service requires traveling 20 to 50 miles both directions and sometimes you drive that distance multiple times in a day. Now consider that you bid the jobs, signed contracts and if you want to keep your reputation…you gotta keep your freakin promises! Performance clauses are in nearly every contract too but if your plumber can’t get toilets and tubs, your electrician can’t get wire and fixtures…you get my drift? The CPI has been being played since Bill Clinton’s administration tampered with the process. Lots of fkn layers to this damned onion and it ALL screws small business.

Yes oil prices fluctuate a lot so they are not included in the core CPI that's true.. but there are secondary effects from the rise in oil prices on the production and transportation cost. For example if shipping is 10% of landed cost of the product shipping cost went up by 30% it means the cost went up by 3% overall which will definitively contribute to inflationary pressures as manufacturers and retailers will pass through this cost to the end consumers. And the same principal applies to housing.. yes direct relation between housing and core inflation is small, but the secondary effect is substantial.. as cost of living increases (shelter, utilities, food...) the employees will naturally start to demand higher wages from their employers which will increase the cost of final products and so contribute to inflation pressure as well. The wage effect on core inflation tend to lag but once it takes hold, it is very sticky and almost irreversable. And with low labor participation, wages will sky rocket and so fueling inflation further!! Get ready for a rocky couple of years..

I have been a subscriber to your channel for a while now - mostly because of the Thomas Sowell content - and very much appreciate the archival material you manage to locate and make available. A truly excellent service. However, recently you seem to be preoccupied - to an almost evangelical level - with selling the benefits of cryto-currency and Bitcoin in particular. I feel you should make a conscious effort to reign in this zeal, before you begin to lose a substantial body of your following who - like me - feel they have heard quite enough about “miracle” investments. Just a thought, as I would not wish to see this particular fetish derail your excellent work in archival sleuthing.

There is nothing miraculous about bitcoin, it's simply replacing gold as a store of value, those who lose faith in fiat currencies have 3 places to turn: real estate, equities, and bitcoin. I choose all 3 and don't consider any of them to be miraculous, just pragmatic. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and hope you stick around.

The US has been in a depression since 2008/9 thats a fact of reality, but the gov has been playing games with definitions and changing even what inflation is. The fact the fed uses CPI as a measure of inflation is the point. Inflation used to be the circulation of money relative to how much is printed. Printing should always be kept low to keep the value high. Like gold. The amount of money the fed has printed over the last 25 years has bankrupted the gov but also made the US dollar almost worthless actually. Its why there is no infrastructure development in the states. Actually go on a road trip and you will see. The gov is lieing. The news still cant decide if the country is in recession or not. That tells me there is a very bad facade that has been put in front of a real horror of poverty going on in every major city and town in the US. Whats upsetting is the news and even you here focusing on "how harsh Tucker is sounding" and we are alarmist. The ALARM HAS BEEN RINGING FOR YEARS AND YOURE NOT LISTENING. ❤

100% disagree. Many people may have forgoten this but the only reason we have an economy is to benefit people ( not for the sake of paper growth, formulas or the purity of some economic theory ). If you want to measure inflation ("the general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.") in any meaninfull way you need to do it by using the price of goods in similar procentages to the expenses of the majority of people. This includes rent, food, transportation, fun, clothing etc. With the proper procentage alocated. Otherwise all you are doing is hiding the real inflation people experiance (real price increases) behind a indicator designed from the start to decive. We do not take masurements just for the sake of trendlines, we also do it to acuratly asses a situation. You can't do that when your procentage alocation is designed to hide price growth.

@@BasicEconomics go back to Milton Friedman and read again. "Inflation is a form of taxation that can be imposed without legislation" Milton Freedman. If you disconect inflation from people's spending that number is pointless. You can set a price to land on Mars, you can measure fluctuations in that price, make a trend line from them. And it's all 100% an exercise in futility. If you are not measuring the increase in price for gods most people use all you are doing is atempting to hide the price increase. I understand why politicians would want to do this and vote for it in Congress. I can't understand why sombody who talks about the economy would accept the premise of assholes.

@@think2invest you seem to have missed my point... the only thing I said that Milton would have taken issue with is expectations being an inflationary driver, he believed inflation was exclusively a monetary policy phenomena.
