The first photograph is of Steve Boone (bass), John Sebastian (autoharp) and Zal Yanovsky (acoustic guitar) recording the backing track to "Younger Girl". The Lovin' Spoonful recorded the track at Bell Sound Studios, New York City, in August 1965.

You'll notice that Zal plays the acoustic much louder intuitively when it's a chord that John can't make on the autoharp. Likely he could make it, but for some reason wasn't practical for this take. So I guess this studio was set up for four tracks? Or three? I only ask because many of the Ampex machines of the era were three for some reason. Likely to be able to provide a stereo Soundstage and then do the typical vocal overdub. Now that I listen, it seems to be the typical three track, with three separate takes, Likely mono with stereo effects added at the mixing desk.

Great song. Love "The Critters" version of this tune.
