Can something be elegant and cheap? Well, you need not look any further than Clay Bottoms' wig to know that.... Ann takes you step by step on how she decorates a vase using cheap tools...some even broken tools! Ann offers up some GREAT DESIGN TIPS and CHEAP TOOL ideas to inspire you!
Answers to questions we get all the time:
We typically bisque to Cone 04 and fire to Cone 5-6
Ann uses Standard English Porcelain no. 365 unless specified otherwise in the video

Hello Newbies, Welcome to one of the most generous artists available. Ann is eager to help. Her videos and humor are informative, easy to follow, and concise. Several of us are longtime fans. I/we hope you come to treasure her and her husband, Jim. He doesn't show up often, but they are comical together. Another wonderful video. Ann, you inspire and give common people like me -- hope and reality. We don't have to spend a fortune to make beautiful work. Thanks!

This is right up my alley Ann. If I could only count the times I've folded paper to divide space on a pot or a poster or any number of other crafts... A couple years ago I invested in the MKM measuring disk set (like your trimmer spinner) and I've used them a ton. I found myself wanting something bigger sometimes so I photo copied the small disks enlarging them and laminated them.

@annruel1982
@annruel1982 7 ай бұрын
Hi A. It is a Georgie's commercial glaze called Eggshell wash. It really isnt a food safe hard glaze, but a nice matt to satiny finish that creates more of an antique effect. I have been using it lately on some of latest pieces like ornaments and vases.

Regarding the underglaze washes: please explain (what you did) in a bit more detail. What is your "satiny eggshell wash" ? Is that the final surface application - or did you add a clear glaze? .......... or no glaze? Thank you for the video.
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 7 ай бұрын
Hi Tricia. Okay. What I did was to use Speedball Medium Green underglaze and Amaco Baby Blue Underglaze. I just watered them down and applied them over the bisque fired piece...letting the underglaze mix in places. I then took a damp sponge and wiped over the piece which wiped clean the surface except the underglaze that was in the cracks and crevices. Once I was happy with how that looked, I took Georgie's Eggshell Wash and applied two thin watery washes over the surface. I found that the wash was very thick in the deeper crevices, and I know from experience that ...that wash if too thick may look too milky over the underglaze. To combat the built up wash in the deep crevices, I actually took my bamboo stick and dug out some of that dried wash until I could see the underglaze beneath. (not totally wipe out the wash, but I just wanted to see a hint of the underglaze. When the wash dries it forms a milky film over the piece. My goal was to create that milky film but still be able to see some of the underglaze beneath in all the places i wanted it to show through. Hope that helps.

I have watched your videos & have finally begun to start working with clay. I have watched the video on the correct way to wedge the clay and I have managed to do it one time without finding any air pockets when I wire through the clay. All my other attempts at wedging have been not so good. I think that between me not having a lot of strength in my hands & arms, and, possibly, my clay not being wet/soft enough, causing me to break or tear the clay while trying to knead it into the ram's head shape. Can you give me any guidelines on how I can figure out the right consistency for my clay, or if you have any other helpful suggestions, I would appreciate your input.
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 7 ай бұрын
Hi P, You are right that wedging seems like it should be such an easy part of the pottery process, but sometimes I can wedge the clay and add even more air bubbles than when I started, haha. When you are talking about needing more strength in your hands and breaking/ tearing the clay, it makes me automatically think that the clay may be too dry in your bag. The clay should not be stiff enough to tear. I would try softening the clay by adding a little moisture to the bag of clay and letting it sit for a few days. You dont want to drench the clay, but just add a little water until the clay is soft enough that when you wedge it ,it doesnt break but not soft enough so that it sticks or melts on your canvas surface. Does that make sense? Good luck. You got this.
@pbabbitt1012
@pbabbitt1012 7 ай бұрын
@@annruel1982 thanks! I am going to keep trying & I will add a little water to the bag of clay and let it rest for a few days. I was thinking it was probably too dry, because I can't even roll a good coil without it breaking. 💕 Absolutely love watching your videos!
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 7 ай бұрын
@@pbabbitt1012 The clay does sound like it is a bit too stiff then. You will be much happier softening it a bit. Good luck to you and thank so much for watching our videos! Jim and I really appreciate it. Happy potting.

@@annruel1982 Success! I got the clay a little sticky, then, placed it on a plaster slab to dry it slightly. I couldn't believe how easy wedging actually is, when the clay is softer! Thanks so much for your expertise! 😊
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 7 ай бұрын
@@pbabbitt1012 Aww...that is great! Part of the craftsmanship of pottery is getting your clay just the right wetness or dryness. That goes for glazes and underglazes too. Gotta get that flow just right. I still work on that too. Happy potting and thanks for sharing.
