Laura and Aaron, We live in a suburb of Chicago. My husband and I watch Garden Answers every morning as we have our coffee. We are long time gardeners but needed inspiration in our Garden which you have provided so much of. We are so excited to start our garden next year and have already purchased our seed. Thank you both so much and keep your tips and inspiration coming. P.S, Samantha Grace is such a cutie and Benjamin is so adorable and helpful but I confess, that Russel is awesome when he wants your attention there is no stopping him, Lol. All this is what makes your show so wonderful to watch.

Samantha's excitement over Russell was everything!!! It looked like she tried to kiss him as he slid by. He was very tolerant of her affection but that kitty loves his mama. As a cat lover, this made my heart swell. Adding a note here, at the end when you mentioned finding an open tree, just know that it's possible to make your own with a real tree. I do so every year. When we go tree shopping, I look for one that's very full with somewhat even layers of branches. Then, when we get it home I get to work trimming it to my specifications, which are open layers with room to show off my ornaments. I've been collecting ornaments for almost fifty years, so I've had to develop a strategy to show them off to best advantage. I decorate my tree from the inside out, starting with lots of lights. Then, I place ornaments close to the trunk so it looks like there's a column of them, top to bottom. I continue placing ornaments all along the length of the branches, moving outward. By the time I'm done, most branches have at least five ornaments lining their length, and I still have some leftover. So, until you find an artificial tree to suit your taste, just know that with a little judicious trimming you can modify a real one. Be careful not to trim too much. It's hard to get started trimming but once you get going, you may find it all too easy to go too far. Ask me how I know. Your mantel is lovely. Merry Christmas! ~ Lisa

The mantle looks lovely! I love the old world feel of your house. Its similar to mine. I had one of those ugly pencil Christmas trees just sitting in our attic for yrs, so this year I cut and dried flowers from my flower beds and yard all through the seasons and saved them. Daffodils to hydrangeas, zinnias, sunflowers, roses, dahlias, rose of sharon flowers, mums, lambs ear etc etc and even the dried stalks from my day lillies. I got down that old tree and did a dried flower Christmad tree. 🎄😍I have to say its the most beautiful tree I've ever seen in all my life. I can't convey in words.. People that see it are literally amazed. I would recommend all gardeners try this project. At least once! Its like.. All our loving hard work throughout the year with our own grown flowers on display in the winter. Its a masterpiece! Haha

Trick for getting sap off hands: bit of cooking oil or anything else greasy. Washes off and leaves hands smooth. BTW, that trick works for removing anything sticky, gum, stickers, whatever. Really loved seeing the kids, especially Samantha Grace’s joy chasing the cat.

That fire place is too beautiful to cover up and reface, the 3 sided facade is absolutely gorgeous! I hope they don't cover up the stone work. If I could redo my miniscule fireplace I would reface mine like theirs.

Grandin Road has "mantle" trees that are open. I have bought one in the past. Nice. Plus if you wanted to make it more bushy just adds some picks. Good luck They come in 2 sizes.
