*** Edited the next day (23rd of March): I can now share what pattern I was using! This is the NEW SEYCHELLES top by Itch to Stitch. It's a lovely woven top with a V neckline and 2 sleeve options. I will have a video about it very soon. Here is my affiliate link to the pattern if you want to have a look: itch-to-stitch.com/product/se...
Even the most basic sewing machine has a handful of decorative stitches there. I know you look at them, but do you actually use them? Believe it or not, this is my FIRST TIME using them IN OVER 30 YEARS OF SEWING. Yup. I decided to change that and see if it's something I want to try again in the future.
I played with all the few stitches until I found one I liked and I used it to decorate the front and back facings of a woven top. In this video you will see some tips on how to use these decorative stitches discretely and how you can make a facing a focal point in your garment.
You can do this with ANY PATTERN that has a facing, round or any shape. This is the way to switch it and do it reversed, or EXPOSED. Pretty!
I have added this video to my V neckline series, because it is a V neckline and this technique has not been featured in the series yet!

Been sewing for years & years Karina but I always pick up a little tiip here and there from your lovely videos. Toadys was the use of the blind hemming foot to keep your top stitching an even distance from the edge. Just let the blade do the work! I have always used presser feet for their intended purpose and I love to see alternative uses. Thank you - you lovely, brilliant sewer.

This is so pretty. Thank you Katrina. I am going to test out the decorative stitches on my awesome 1974 Singer Futura 900 that has about 22 decorative stitches. LOL It is like driving a Manual Stick Shift car; that has to change gears. Zoom zoom! Back then it was state of the art, and not what we were using in Home Ed classes. It's drawing straight lines that is the hard part!

Very pretty. I have had my machine for nearly 40 years and have cams with zillions of decorative stiches. I have used them on kid costumes years ago and then last year, I was feeling like, I have this machine that can do all these stiches and I never use them what a waste... So I applied them in places that mostly only I would see, like on the top sheets at the small bed and breakfast where I work, I extended the sheets 18 inches so that I had longer tuck in which allowed me more length to fold over the blanket at the top of the bed also. The innkeeper was over the moon with how beautiful the French seams looked top stiched with decorative stitches in colors that matched the room decors. These sheets now make me smile every time I fold them out of the dryer and when I change the beds because they are so pretty and feminine like french lingerie. I am definitely going to add this idea even to inside facings which I love when done with colorful print fabrics only seen when you put on or take off the clothing. Just a special extra touch to personalize handmade garments. I love it.

Wonderful video! I love the decorative stitches! Even if you have only a few, if you add in your control over stitch width, length and thread color and type....you have even more visual options. Even the stitches that are supposted to be the basics can be creatively used. I love the look of tone on tone with this. It is very subtle but very elegant. I use the stitches in unique ways on my clothing also and even on knits. It can take a RTW garment and really up the look. Beautiful video. Thank you very much! :)

I do have a janome embroidery machine, I took the Joan top ( style arc) and embroidered a beautiful flower spray on the upper left side. It turned out so well and spruced up a plain top. So often I see/hear people saying that you don’t need a machine with lots of fancy stitches and I totally agree. BUT, when you do use them, you have shown how it lifts garments to another level. Your top is so unique and beautiful, it’s become ‘designer’. Kids garments especially look so pretty too. One little tip that quilters use. With spare threads put a tiny knot very close to the bottom and then pull them through between the layers (eg facing & back piece) until you hear or feel a tiny ‘pop’. This hides the thread, the knot keeps it between the layers, and then you won’t have any cut threads seen at all.

I made my sewing machine cover out of plain cream padded cotton, then used every embroidery stitch my machine has (20) to make embroidered lines over the cover, from front to back, so I could see at a glance what did what, (about 15 years ago?) but have never actually used them on a garment. Will now use to embellish a garment at long last, it's ideal on the facing, though I think I'll go with a round facing and go alongways, and hope it's easier than a V :). Oh and an extra point, I saw a video that showed if you use the double needle you get even fancier effects...

The machine I use now is almost identical to your old one! I like using my twin needle to make tiny pin tucks but I don't have any decorative stitches.

Love your tutorials. You are so precise and careful, yet practical. Appreciate you. I am making a couple of the Megan Nielsen Dove tops. I have seen your Dove tutorials but am wondering if the technique in this video would work for the Dove. I may try it.

Fabulous video as always. I wonder if you have considered a video on bias tape...how to make continuous tape, how to sew hong kong seams...I just am terrible with bias tape!

I already have a very popular video on how to make bias tape here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKyqgtBlycmzc2Q.html As for Hong Kong, I’m not too much of a fan and prefer wrapping the raw edge with bias tape in one go... looks like ho g Kong and is much faster. See about that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esCoqa9jq664qqc.html

Super idea Karina. Would you recommend any particular type of thread to do this. For instance would you use a cotton thread on say a linen fabric. Also just wondering what weight to use. Would machine embroidery thread be too heavy. Manny thanks. X
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have the option of buying different types of thread and use POLY thread for everything. It’s what I can buy here. I keep it simple and I’m sure there are many other better threads out there but I don’t have the experience in machine embroidery to recommend anything special.

Hi, as you only mentioned, that you welcome any ideas or suggestions. After watching your video, I have only one thing to say . That is, if you could have used still bright colour like bright Yellow, baby pink etc., it would have complimented fabric colour more and attractive. I just hope, you wouldn't mind. Right?😊😊

Thanks Karina :o) Great idea! It looks like the decorative stitches aren't secured at the ends. I am concerned about them coming undone. Is the straight line of stitching used to secure the facing enough to secure the decorative stitches from unravelling too? Many thanks.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 3 жыл бұрын
The facing is sewn to the neckline with a 2.5 stitch length and then the neckline is understitched. The edge of the facing is also sewn down. I think the stitches are very secure and I would hand wash this item anyway. In this case it’s impossible to secure the stitches because I embroidered a larger piece than the facing was going to need. If I had wanted to reinforce them, I would’ve had to be very precise to only do the exact shape and size of the facing. I don’t see this any different to using embroidered fabric that I just cut up and use as per normal.

I'm a beginner. My main question is, what or how are you using the foot pedal while the machine is making this stitch. Do you keep you foot on the pedal or pulse it? Maybe there is a beginner channel that takes it to the very beginning. Like foot, thread, etc.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 7 ай бұрын
It’s the normal presser foot. The machine does the stitch because there are stitch options. The pedal is always stepped on while I sew and I only lift my foot to stop like any other stitch. I don’t plan to make content for the super beginner as you mention.
