In this video today I look at my dad's DECT Phone.
He has replaced the batteries and it still doesn't work. Can it be fixed?
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

You are absolutely spot on Vince, I have one of those chargers and even my grandson who was 2 at the time knew how to extend the earth pin. I am retired now but used to install aerials and satellite equipment from the very early days. I used to get calls from people who wouldn't call Sky because when their their decoder wasn't working because they were told of a charge of £35.00 plus VAT @ 17.5% would be charged if no fault found (this was when it was analogue and the decoder was a seperate box plugged into the receiver), nine times out of ten all I had to do was show the customer how to fix this by unplugging the decoder for a few seconds, I lost money on the call-out but most of them would pass my number on and it generated goodwill and a good reputation plus extra income.

Funny. I took my old Panasonic DECT phone out out of order because it turns off when I put it to the table. This evening after watching your video I took a look on it and the battery contacts were bent. Now it works again and I will store it again as a spare phone or use it as a secondary phone for my working room. THX

We’ve got the set that has the colour display, and you can page-call each handset so you don’t have to shout for the kids tea etc, or call the shed or workshop, as long as each headset is in connection distance from the main base unit, very advanced for their time, still going strong to this day Nice fix Vince thanks

That shop reminds me of being conned in LA on holiday. We did lots of train travel and I bought a multi region dvd player. Paid 60 extra for muti region. He then sold me an extra pack for 40 dollars containing a remote and larger battery. Get on the train and I realise that the remote and battery are the ones that come with it. Get back to UK and realise it will only play region 1 dvds! They knew as a tourist I'd never go back and complain. I got well and truly ripped off due to my desire to have films to watch on long train journey. And I'm tech savvy!

I've been using the same Panasonic Dect phones for years, the one in my living room,,, as far as I know has never had a battery change, it has just sat their on charge just doing it's own thing. The second handset was in my bedroom, but a couple of years ago it mysteriously went missing, I've still got the cradle. I've searched many times with no avail. Theres a possibility someone has phoned me in the middle of the night and it was thrown out the window. These are well built units that just keep going forever. As my father used to say, if it works, leave well alone. I have another dect phone that I had problems with the batteries, I bought new ones for £4.99, they were definitely old and useless. I bought 2 garden lights from poundland, took out the batteries and used them, and it works perfect, all for £1,00

Hello Vince, wow the Panasonic DECT phone. Still using the KX-A144ES version, which uses two AAA batteries and came in a triple pack from a shop called The Link. Go this back in the early 2000 also. Similar to the one that's in the video, but grey and using two AAA batteries instead. Also cleaned up the battery contacts and had an answer machine on the main base unit. Now just used an an internal intercom system and no longer connected to a phone socket/network. Great video.

Well done. It may have been slight corrosion between the IC pins, moisture due to heat or fumes from battery chemicals can cause issues. An ultrasonic bath-time may have been worthwhile. Though, the battery was only at one bar comment confused me (no change there), as the voltage could have dipped as the phone booted. Many stores selling adaptors and other phone paraphernalia tend not to include boxes of sharp tools. The strapline is usually selling is good, anything else is bad.

There was a famous chain of electronics stores in the US called Radio Shack. They're all but gone now. One of their slogans was "You've got questions. We've got answers". Trouble was the slogan didn't match up to the same level of service in the stores. Most staff who are hired to work in electronics stores know very little about electronics or what they are selling. I have noticed this over a period of 50 years visiting different electronics stores in New Zealand where I live. It's nothing new - back then, just as now, I was getting blank stares when I asked questions at an electronics store so it's no surprise that the person who served your dad had no idea about the extendable pin on that adapter.

Another great video Vince, first time I have ever commented on video by the way! I had a similar problem with the same make but different model of DECT phones. Three of them developed the same fault after many years, on the charger base they would seem to charge but randomly beep and restart, I would pick them up to use them but there would be no power left in the batteries. So I changed the batteries, after a week or so they would do it again. I charged the batteries in an external charger... same thing. It turned out that there is a schottky diode in the charger base that degrades that prevents the phone from charging correctly, it would register that it was connected and charging but would not charge. I changed them in all 3 bases and have had no issues since. As your dad's are a different model it may not be that but if your curious it's worth a quick look. I have been an electronics repairer and designer for, let's just say a few decades now and work for a global electronic giant designing products so if you ever need any pointers or help then let me know!

The reason electronics aren’t recycled very often where I live is that they're accepted for recycling only at certain depots, every one of which is open 8 to 4 five days a week (and if that weren't enough, is located in a remote industrial area far from public transit). It's like they’ve gone out of the way to make it impossible for anyone to drop stuff off.
@ray73864

Here in Australia, it was mandated over a decade ago, that manufacturers and importers are required to pay towards the recycling of electronics that they make / import. Lots of drop-off locations depending on what the item is (Computer, TV, etc...), just requires people to actually go to the effort of taking it to one of those places (Most people live within 10-15min drive of one). One thing I really wish our councils would do, is add 'Electronic Waste pickup' to the list of services they provide once a year. My local council provides twice-yearly greenwaste collection, and once-yearly hardwaste collection.

You talking about the charger and your dad being ripped off made me think of how many hundreds of thousands of pounds I've saved older folks over the years when they ring me up and say my laptop/PC has gone wrong and the screen is frozen or something similar. If I was disreputable and just wanted money I could drive out and then charge them a fortune to fix the "problem" BUT I DON'T, I tell them to switch off the machine and power it up again and if the problem persists then call me again. I reckon that maybe 1 in a 100 ring back and say they still have a problem and even after 20 years of tech repair I still tell people to do that first👍👍👍👍👍

Those Uniross batteries are certainly retro! Unless they have re-appeared and are using the old branding they are from the 80's or 90's. Lovely design, when you said you Dad got them I was like "WHERE THE HELL DO I GET THOSE" lol as I love that retro look. If they have never been used they may still hold a decent charge, best put them into a battery analyzer if you have one however even if they are not up to their full capacity for a DECT phone that might stay on charge most of the time they will probably work fine for a good few years.

For everyone confused about the batteries. Yes, rechargeable batteries are in fact Alkaline. Non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries are marketed as "alkaline" to show they are different to the zinc chloride types, which are acidic. NiCD and NiMH rechargeable batteries use the same electrolyte as the non-rechargeable ones and thus are alkaline. When they leak, which I find is very rare, they leave the same alkaline fizzy stuff that vinegar works so well on. The Uniross batteries are likley from the 90's possible the 80's. It is also quite possible they are NiCD. Although old they may still hold a charge. Sigh, for a moment I hoped Uniross was back and releasing retro styled batteries again. I miss my 4 Uniross C cells I used in my battery powered soldering iron back in the 90's!

Regarding e-waste recycling, it's indeed pretty terrible. With plastic recycling only part of it is actually recycled at all, most is burned and a lot of microplastics end up in the environment. For the PCBs it's not economical to recovery anything but things like gold and silver from them, the rest tends to get burned or ends up in a landfill after the shredding of the board, display, etc. Hence why reduce, reuse, repair, recycle is so essential, and why making devices repairable is essential. Not just for the environment, but also for consumers.
@jessicav2031
@jessicav2031 11 ай бұрын
Hah, yeah, more "recycling theater". Where I live the government goes through your trash to see if you are recycling enough and scolds you. But then what is the recycling bin? Single stream, and glass gets thrown away. The most useless type of recycling, it just ends up being dumped in some country in SE Asia because it is way too expensive to sort even with cheap labor. Repair and reuse is the best way, most recycling is just an excuse for people to overconsume.

It used to be that back in the day shop salespeople were told to be as helpful as possible because even if it costs you a sale today, you gain a customer for life. These days it's "If you have to lie to the customer to get a sale today, do it." It's all part of a larger shift of business practices in general from having a long term focus to the idea that anything beyond today is tomorrow's problem.

Maybe the clerk had legitimately never seen that before and it didn't occur to them that it would be able to pop out one of the prongs. When you were holding it before I thought it was going to be about how ridiculous it was that some company made a plug that was literally unusable and how bad they must have been at design. I am in North America, so I don't actually know if that sort of design is common on low-profile UK plugs, but it must not be that common if your father didn't know about it either, I think.

Every phone charger in the UK, apple, samsung being the most common, use these. This feature is a standard trick used to make a more compact charger for compact packaging or travel reasons. Anyone working in a shop that sells phone chargers will have seen loads of these. Anyone using an Apple phone or a Samsung phone or other makes will have gotten these in the box. Anyone working in a tech shop should have the IQ to simply figure it out because it's blatently obvious the earth pin is too low and moves. Having no clue on how a common charger works, in a shop that sells them every day, is like having someone work in a shop selling AA batteries yet having no clue how to put them into a toy and having no ability to figure it out.

I get a similar thing on my old panasonic phone except it goes totally dead but putting it back in the charger brings it back to life for a while. It works fine until you get an important call then it dies. I did take it apart but didn't find anything. I just bought a secondhand one off Ebay for a fiver and it works fine. As for recycling my local tip used to have a plastics skip but now it all goes in household waste, they do have a household appliance skip and they do take a few things out before they crush it as long as they can hide them under their jacket. I must admit I've had quite a few things myself when they're not looking I just hate the thought of them being crushed and they will get them back at some point.

I have a pair of wireless headphones and there are times when I fall asleep with them on. Sometimes, they will drain one battery down so low that my Miboxer charger will not recognize it while the other battery charges fine. I tap the leads from the bench power supply (1.2v) on it for about 5 seconds and the charger proceeds to charge it. This happens with old and new AAA rechargeable equally.

We had loads of those too but as DECT phones moved on they just started using standard cells. I remember seeing the NIMH packs like you describe in non DECT analogue cordless phones, I suspect a few of those old analogue ones might still be in use. They were about 15 -20 years ago or so as I used to pick them up on my scanner and that was quite a while after they stopped generally making them. I used to sell these things in Staples back all those years ago so remember the "transition" they made to DECT everything. These days you find similar packs in RC stuff.

UK plug sockets are designed to be extremely safe. The earth pin must be present otherwise it is physically impossible to plug anything into the socket. The live and neutral pins can not enter without the earth pin inserted as that pin is used to open the shutters. The idea is that the first connection made is to earth. If you look at the live and neutral pins you will see they also have insulation bands. This also means that by the time electrical contact has been made inside the socket there is no chance of any electrical connection to that can be made so something like a knife touching the pins. The earth pin is all metal, the knife can only make electrical connection to earth which is fine. Older plugs or fake ones dont have the insulation bands so will cause a danger of someone killing themselves, unless they happen to touch the earth pin too, which is why that is always all metal (when that pin is needed). In this case the earth pin is plastic as the device does not actually need it. However without it is correctly impossible to make a connection. Unless you have a broken socket that is!

A shop near me, when I was a london kid, used to sell low quality electricals which were often short lived and if taken back, they would take them to bits infront of your eyes and try to mend them and hand them back. You never got your manoey back, they just didnt see that as something they would do. Also about 15 years ago, had a power brick sold to us from Maplins for my daughter's keyboard which luckily we didnt use before checking with the music shop and discovering it would have burned it out. That was very strange as Maplins used to train their assistants to a very high level . A lot of people in England now, dont care tuppence about taking advantage of elderly or vulnerable people.

I would agree it's pretty shameful to conduct business in such a way. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if the employee who worked with your dad was just ignorant of the fact that the plug could do that. I've met folks who range from not knowing how to use a scanner to not knowing how to pump their own fuel, so there isn't much that surprises me anymore.

Hi Vince, in relation to your comment about the sharp business practices of the shop your dad went to, I don't think it is acceptable. I don't live in the UK anymore but where I do, prices often operate on a sliding scale based upon how much the shop keeper thinks you are worth or how much you know. Fortunately/unfortunately I think this kind of thing is more common abroad than in the UK but nevertheless I think there are universal truths in this world, one of them is that you shouldn't deliberately rip people off.

This type of phone brought me the worst repair experience so far. I received a lot of electronics from someone in my village to take apart, and the phone had been kept in a farmhouse. When I opened it up, I noticed something sticky, and well, let's just say I didn't realize so many insects could fit inside a phone. It was so gross; I had to dispose of the electronics for the first time in my life.

@Mymatevince I notice that you didn't use the component tester to test which capacitor was faulty. I understand that you might not have done this because you felt pressed for time and you probably wanted to get the phone back to your dad as soon as possible or maybe you did use the tester and cut that footage out of the video, but either way I was surprised not to see it! 😮

It’s very possible that sales person wasn’t aware of that style of charger. Are they fairly new? I’ve worked in retail and I remember when USB C first came out I had no idea what it was. Bare in mind I’m the kind of person who would lose the store sales because I refused to sell anything to someone who didn’t need it. I would give them an alternative solution.

I don't think Uniross has used that packaging and branding on their batteries since the 1990's! I wouldn't be surprised if the shop had them in stock since the 90s too, I recently came across a corner shop in outer London with new old stock blank VHS cassettes still hanging up on display for sale I use the same panasonic DECT phones, I have them mixed with an older set, both bought for pennies at car boot sales. The nice thing about panasonic ones is all their DECT ones seem to operate with each other so you can pair all different models of their cordless phones to one base station and all seem to work great including caller ID, answerphone access etc. They also seem to be a lot more reliable than the other brands and they have proper battery charging logic rather than just trickle charging the batteries at a fixed current like most of the other brands seem to do. You can use alkaline batteries for testing them, just hold down the "end call" (power) button to power on without needing to put the phone on charge Also those Samsung USB chargers have been like that for years now, very hard to believe someone working in an electronics shop wouldn't know about that.

I thought Uniross was gone! And yes, that is their 80s/90s design but I hoped they had brought it back like Cadbury brought Wispa back. They are old cells but if they still hold a charge they should work for years. (Just googles, Uniross is a name still applied to rechargables if you shop online you will see them. But certainly that is a very nicely retro packaging design)

I haven't seen these types of phones used here in Australia for some time. The phone lines don't exist anymore so you'd have to set them up over VOIP (Voice over IP) and with the advent of wifi calling and unlimited calls on your mobile plan, the need for landlines/home phones has just disappeared altogether. I wonder what is different in the UK that makes these DECT phones hold their place in the market?
@ray73864
@ray73864 11 ай бұрын
Plenty of companies still sell them here in Australia. Officeworks, JBHifi, TheGoodGuys, BigW, Harvey Norman, etc... I got my Panasonic DECT phone set a couple of years ago from Harvey Norman. All you need is an ATA (Such as a Cisco one), or, if you are with an RSP that supplies their own modem/router, they generally have an ATA built-in that you plug a phone into.

@@ray73864 I get that you can buy them. What I said was I hadn't seen one used in years. I just wonder what the use case scenario is for a landline when nobody is ever more than a metre from their mobile at any given time?
@dlarge6502
@dlarge6502 11 ай бұрын
The UK uses a VOIP system, the last leg to the houses is either: 1. VOIP provided by the router (an ATA). Your standard analogue phones will plug into the router and instantly become VOIP phones. All your extensions in the house can do so too. Almost any phone that uses tones for dialing is compatible. Pulse dialing phones may not be but they will work for answering. Phones with glorious bells in them may work if not you can get a booster that will get the bell ringing! 2. The last leg is still copper and the ISP/line provider has not enabled your VOIP functions on the router yet and asked you to plug your phone lines into the router. I'm at number 2. My router has RJ11 sockets for analogue phones but I'm not on that yet, at some point Virgin (the ISP) will turn off the dedicated phone link and ask me to plug my phones into the router. But behind the scenes the UK phone network is almost entirely digital. I recently had an issue with my phone line, no calls and a noisy line. Called up Virgin who fixed it using software their end. They just moved me onto another circuit, took all of 5 mins of basic tests. As for the reason I still use a landline? Well its a great way to contact companies or sign up to things! I'm at work out of the house most of each day so as those companies sell my house number they can cold call the answer phone, on which they never leave a message. Thus my mobile remains cold call free! They also sound WAY better than a mobile, especially if it is a landline on the other end too. They are also cheap and work during a power cut (well line powered phones do, which I have). However when everyone plugs them into the routers for the "VOIP upgrade" the router will need a backup power source for any chance of working during a power cut. How that *requirement* has been handled by BT etc annoys me but its there. When I call friends and family I usually use the mobile, it annoys me though. If I want to know if someone is in that house so I can deliver the xmas presents I'd rather RING THE HOUSE and not have to call everyone who may or may not be in the house :D. When I call businesses I use the landline unless I really must give them my mobile number because I want them to call me even when at work. I also like them better than my mobile. I work in IT and I like having ways to avoid glowing computer screens and certainly touchscreens as much a possible because they tend to annoy me.

My decades old DECT phones take NiCAD and NiMH. Those GP batteries are likely rechargeable NiMH, and the Uniross ones are probably ancient NiCAD. I haven't seen them since the 90's. I have had Panasonic eneloop's in my handsets for at least 5 years. You can get the Ikea version for cheaper.

It charges the ni-mh AAA cells. Usually a constant trickle charge, which eventually after many years will totally kill the batteries so its a good idea to let them drain a bit from time to time and not leave the phone in the dock. Even my new BT DECT handsets dont intelligently stop charging the cells when they are full.
