This video explains all three types of reasoning comprehensively. It tell what is meant by reasoning or logic. Furthermore, it gives the concept of three main types of reasoning such as Deduction, Induction and Abduction. This video describes differences among these three approaches with examples and use in research designs.

How to write the justification of using qualitiative method (say content analysis) when reasoning is deductive? As you said, deductive approach generally deals with qauntitative data.

The example about the coffee being tasty technically exemplified abductive reasoning, and abductive reasoning is by no means less common than deduction and abduction. Rather, its formalization systems are less developed and less explicitly utilized. However, as Charles Sanders Peirce noted, all coherent sensory perception involves abductive reasoning. Your perception of words on a screen is actually the conclusion of an abductive argument. You see words on the screen because you unconsciously reason these specific words being on a screen is the best explanation for the patterns of variation within your visual qualia. And of course, distinction between and within sensory phenomena is itself deductive argumentation, and unconsciously associating those distinctions with past distinctions per common patterns is inductive argumentation. In truth, all three types of reasoning are used in a continuous stream of argumentation that constitutes you as a being.

Thanks for clarifying the difference. One small doubt - can we use deductive method to study existing theories in qualitative research? Appreciate your help.

This is a great video. The only thing I wish we would avoid as scientists is using the word "theory" in this way. This gives people that say "evolution is just a theory" credence. The cell theory - all living things are made of cells and all cells come from pre-existing cells, is hardly something that needs further scientific support. :)

Thank you so much for the wonderful explanation. How to choose between Inductive and Abductive in qualitative research?
@ResearchTube
@ResearchTube Жыл бұрын
When choosing between inductive and abductive approaches in qualitative research, it is important to consider the nature of the research question and the data that is available. If the research question is exploratory and the data is rich and complex, an inductive approach may be appropriate to identify patterns and themes that can be used to develop new theories. However, if the research question is more focused and specific, and there is already a theoretical framework to work from, an abductive approach may be more suitable to test hypotheses and theories. It is also important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Inductive approaches are often considered more flexible and open-ended, but may be criticized for lacking theoretical grounding. Abductive approaches, on the other hand, may be more structured and rigorous, but may also be criticized for being too narrow in focus. Ultimately, the choice between inductive and abductive approaches will depend on the specific research question, the available data, and the researcher's theoretical and methodological preferences.

It was quite difficult for me to determine between Abductive and Deductive when creating certain examples. Would this be considered an example abductive or deductive. Pluto is made out of blue cheese. Everything made of blue cheese is tasty. Therefore, Pluto is tasty. It does seem to be a valid argument.
@ResearchTube

Thanks for your comment. This example is about deduction, in abduction minor facts are always missing and we can only make intelligent Guess, in deduction, theory guides us for making assumptions or hypothesis

EXAMPLE OF DEDUCTIVE REASONING Most of the students visit UAF Library to consult theses and dissertations. It was observed that a group of MPhil students of Agronomy visited the library multiple times last week. Therefore it may be deducted that MPhil students are visiting UAF Library most frequently these days to consult theses on Agronomy.

Respected Madam. Could you please guide whether following is correct example of inductive reasoning? EXAMPLE OF INDUCTIVE REASONING In an observation, libray staff noted that 7 out of 10 students of BS programs at UAF were using the Wikipedia as primary source of information. Later the same was found true in case of M.Phil. students as well. Therefore it was deducted that majority of UAF students consider Wikipedia as primary source of information.
