Mr. Roarke vs Satan

Sure Ricardo Montalban played the unforgettable Khaaaaan!!! But he also had a great series in the late 70's called Fantasy Island, granting fantasies to each weeks special guest star, (more or less). On two occasions, he confronted The Devil himself, played equally awesomely by Roddy McDowall. Here, we see Roarke renegotiating for a husband and wife's soul, putting his own soul on the line to resolve things. Why can't we have actors like this on tv or movies anymore???

Dear 21st Century. This is what professional acting looks like. 4 minutes and 29 seconds of nuanced perfection. When McDowall screams, "Damn you Roarke!" into the abyss, I actually took pity on him. Montalban and McDowall own this scene. And they will forever own our hearts.

And Tattoo has a place in our hearts as well. He was a part of what made Fantasy Island so cool. It really wasn't the same without him. It's too bad his mental health was slipping and no one knew what to do. Apparently he was becoming a pest on set chasing after women, dressing like a hippy and refusing to bathe regularly. So there were signs before he got fired. I heard that Ricardo was trying to help him, to keep him calm and not freaking out but Herve because jealous of him and demanded he have the same trailer because Ricardo needed a bigger shower bc he was a big man. Herve wanted the same thing when it just wasn't necessary. It's a shame they didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it. He just gradually got worse. I hope he's at peace and I hope he could feel all the love that people had for him. He really was a special part of Fantasy Island and he was funny. I pray he has a better life next time.

When the scene is laid out as "You're the literal force for good in a white suit and he's the literal devil in a black suit," I expect no subtlety. In fact, I demand none. Both Montalban an McDowall just go for it here. Utterly committed, playing it totally straight, and it works so well.

@@dashx1103 I would politely disagree. Though early installments set the cost at $50,000 (almost $200,000 in today's money), after the show's first few episodes, the cost was described as tailored to the person. The cost was significant to them, but not necessarily terribly expensive; a little girl gave the entire contents of her piggy bank, which amounted to less than ten dollars, but it bought her her fantasy with her father. And still others paid nothing, having won their ticket to the island in (like rigged) contests.

The same can be said for the writing of the new Star Trek series. Since they abandoned Roddenberry's view of the universe, there is less writing about people/characters. Too much plot is centered on catering to various groups and agendas.

@@katherinkeegan8601 Like what specifically? Roddenberry was very left. Russians and Americans working together. First interacial kiss. @@goober8798Those views of Roddenberry don’t make him a leftist. Equality does not belong to the right or the left. It stands on its own. The left is no more virtuous than the right on matters of equality. The definition and examples of woke and inclusivity in the past are not the same as the ones that are being perpetrated in the present. The people who claim being woke and inclusive now are not people that actually support equality or any other noble cause. They stand for the exact opposite of equality and inclusivity.

@@goober8798 You're missing the point. Roddenberry had a utopian vision of the future. The new shows, especially _Picard,_ are very dystopian, and not what he had in mind at all. I'd also point out that the only reason he created Chekov was that he'd heard about Russians complaining that there were none of them aboard the Enterprise. "After all," they said, "we were the first out there!" I honestly think that Chekov's running gag about everything originating in Russia was Roddenberry's dig at those same complaining Russians. 🙂

They do a lot with very little, since the script is logically inconsistent, the premise is basically flawed, the dialog is stilted and the lighting, makeup and blocking are hokey. Most modern-day actors (even some who have won major acting awards) just don't know how to use their skills like a Stradivarius violin. They don't know how to modulate and alter their vocal tone or cadence to maximum effect, they aren't aware enough of their facial expressions, they rely too heavily on physical movement to shore up what their other skills lack.. They lack refinement, style, timing, etc.

"Reality" shows are intended to lower the bar for all of us. We see people far more screwed up than ourselves, come to a false realization we need not improve ourselves as we are much better off than many others, and then we even find ourselves tempted to relax our standards a bit. We then become ripe for any social agenda the powers that be want to push. "Reality" shows aren't the problem by themselves. They are just one set of many symptoms of the problem.

Same here. the nightmarish scenes gave me nightmares, i still remember a scene of a woman being attacked by life sized wooden soldiers. I think it followed Loveboat and the Fantasy Island started with the same happy feel-good, but that often decayed into horror that rivaled the Nightstalker. Fantasy Island and Nightstalker turned a young boy into a horror fan. Neither have seen a successful reboot, but i consider Supernatural to be at least a spiritual successor and perhaps Netflix's Evil series. A simmering foreboding that lurks despite any victory. Maybe not the best thing for developing young minds, but i'll leave that to debate.

"We will play again. We have _all eternity_ before us." There is no reason for the devil to lie about such a thing, and he would likely know. This episode did answer the question as to whether Roarke was ultimately on the side of good or evil, which was deliberately left vague in the pilot. @@Chokah The very first episode hinted that he was more than just a resort manager/owner. Guest: Who is he? Tattoo: Some call him (actor looks up), some call him (actor looks down) me I just call him boss. There was one other episode where he battles the devil for his niece's soul. We have no more clue about who/what he is by the end of that episode either. No mention of his niece's parents or any other members of his family that I remember.

@@Chokah Ricardo Montalban in an interview said that when he got the part of Mr. Roarke that He tried to explain to himself in his head. How Roarke can have the power to grant all these Fantasies. and he came up with the Idea that Mr. Roarke was actually an angel, Although it is never stated in the series. Hey it makes sense to me and ties in with why the devil hates him so much.

Two awesome actors. I sort-of remembered this scene because it made a huge impression on me as a kid, but I did forget some of the details. Ricardo Montalban was the best. He was a man's man, and that voice! Like rich Corinthian leather.

This was a reunion for these two; they'd worked together in "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," in which McDowall played Dr. Cornelius and Montalban played Armando, and "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," in which Montalban reprised Armando and McDowall played Caesar.
