Andy Burnham has held many senior cabinet positions and stood for the Labour leadership twice, before leaving Westminster and becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Now serving his second term as Mayor, his profile grew over the past year as he fought for his position and challenged the government on imposing the highest tier Covid restrictions in the north west of England.
Andy speaks to Krishnan about his experience leaving the north for Cambridge university, why he feels devolution is the way forward for the UK and how he thinks Westminster needs to change.

Really interesting interview. The kind of politician we need. Empathic, articulate and really understands what he’s talking about. Pragmatic too. His stance on devolution totally agree with. Half my life in the North other half in the South. What he did for Hillsborough. However we also really need Andy on the Front Bench.too. Keirs PMQs and Andys particular grasp of the Nortg would be extremely effective. Remember that Andy? please for the love of God, help us get rid of that lunatic Johnson!

Deep devolution is a dead duck. If you look at the situation in Northern Ireland and Scotland the greater devolution idea is dead. Anyone in Scotland who would trust the Tories to not renege on any deal is living in cloud cuckoo land. Anyone watching the Tory government and how Brexit led to the NI protocol and serious damage to NI would realise that the Tories have no commitment to anyone except themselves. This government has completely sunk any prospect of a new settlement.
@antseanbheanbocht4993
@antseanbheanbocht4993 3 жыл бұрын
There is no damage in Northern Ireland, its actually an economic Win for us but the DUP fear closer ties with the Republic will lead to a United Ireland. The Republic has guaranteed it will pay for British Children in the North to remain in the Erasmus scheme, we remain in the single market and still trade with Britain and some protocol rules are still to be relaxed. The Scots and Welsh would kill for this deal. The Tories are over exaggerating the problems in order to extract concessions from the EU which would give the entire UK more access to EU markets. It isn't going to happen. The DUP dispise Ireland and want no connection with it at all. The only problem with the protocol is it makes the DUP look bad, the DUP don't speak for the North, most political parties are behind the protocol.

The only possibility for a Labour PM in our lifetime - currently, at least. But has he realised why some people who can't vote Tory can't yet vote Labour, either? The sticking point for me is Labour's deeply-corrupting attachment to first-past-the-post. It's made them Tory-lite and then Corbynista. Neither alternative is very attractive. He's the only Labour figure seriously contemplating what used to be called root and branch reform! So, there's some hope. The UK establishment is corroded and corrosive.

The main problem with Brexit is that it is being run by billionaire interests which are unrelated to the good of common society. These interests are translated by the media into propaganda that shuts down intelligent discourse and encourages general in the voting population. Brexit could been run via a customs union and re-joining the single market, thus upsetting the billionaires who don't even live in the UK, but ending the ever growing catastrophe for the general population, especially in Northern Ireland. If you are right about AB then this is the path I would expect for him to follow and I personally would be happy to support him.

All of sudden, the interviewer appears on-screen looking vaguely quizzical with his face appearing in over half the horizontal lines, displaying what would at least seem to me to be a subtle but confrontational pose. It really is noticeably abrupt. I do find it vaguely troubling that such techniques are utilised on Channel 4 News.

One of the big weaknesses of Blairite Labour was the belief in the 'end of history in the victory of markets' on one hand and the idea they had solved boom and bust so that Capitalism was no longer unstable. All that 'lock-in growth' Brownian stuff (influenced by complexity theory) has disappeared. The banks collapse in 2008 was completely outside their ideological assumptions about the relationship between markets and state. It's been interesting to see that the Conservatives have picked up votes via a more interventionist rhetoric, while leaving the city (still) untouched, except of course via Brexit (which is the focal point for some as a possible 'alternative'). I just think it's not going to deliver as the core idea is a lie. The only thing that was holding the UK back was ideology, not the EU. Perhaps it's just expediency or a foil for political change. Regardless, it's hard to see what Labour can do in this shake-down post 2008 and now 2016 that creates a story that makes sense. Education policy is a possible Conservative weakness as are the nature and efficiency of their spending. I think Burnham is on to something when it comes to the over-centralised state. It could just come down to the inability of the Tories to keep the Union together, or perhaps another shock.

COMMENT: In summary, the video described generational change - Nice piece of political party analysis - Yes, the UK needs rewiring, devolution to the regions to counter the centralisation issues at a generational level in the interests of a cohesive nation critically, such based upon the London issues of encapsulated groups that upon the edges there is friction, as to the liberal multiculturalism presented there of. Yup, policies of division and conflict are rife, and riddled within the institutions, as people are institutionalised through work and constructs of work, if business if viewed through the lens of politics, as a higher order function of the design of business, in analysis, as experienced. I concur with the posited best health policy starts with a good housing policy, as well as the basic issue of poor/dilapidated housing stock to rebuild social housing, with a capacity to fulfil its function, in the face of rental market failures/homelessness. Labour is pro multiethnicity, so no way is Labour going to get into government,look at the numbers of your members who left to support brexit, haven't you learnt yet we do NOT want multiethnic country, OUR heritage and culture and customs ONLY,the rest have to live with in that. NO MORE being dictated to by these people as to what we can or not say,do not tell me something British offends you I don't care.
