Just to clarify for new viewers, a TAS is not " a robot driving". It's rather a spliced run by a human. You go over and over again on a small section until you get it perfect, then you save those inputs for that part and go to the next part, repeat. Then put it all together. Also as someone else pointed out, this is not the optimal run, it is the optimal run for the guy/guys that has put the TAS together.

It would be more accurate to say it is optimised then optimal, but it isnt strictly human inputs, brute forcing can be used where you create a trigger (like a landing road piece) that measures the car's speed, then the computer tries thousands or millions of sets of semi random inputs and records the best results for you to curate. You also usually have access to cheaty tools like slow motion, custom steering curves, optimal drift angle calculators or even entering in inputs manually on a frame by frame basis. Splicing is the main strategy on a map like this though.

TAS is like if you had a checkpoint every 0.001s where you can reset to any checkpoint at any time, and the final run cuts out all but the successful attempts. (There's also manually writing the inputs, and brute forcing, but this description gives the right flavor.) It still takes effort and skill to make a TAS, most of it is driven by a human.

Can we stop saying that TAS represents the theoretically optimal run? TAS are usually (almost) perfect in the sense that the execution is perfect, but a TAS run does not necessarily mean that a perfect strategy was found.

I think the disconnect for you here is your interpretation of the word theoretical. The word theory has 2 common-ish usages, which are either a guess based primarily on intuition and the best known explanation for a given thing. Which are opposites, but hey that's English for you. Anyway, a TAS does represent a 'theoretically optimal run', so long as: Run - is taken to mean 'set of player inputs' and theoretical implies the best tools used and most knowledgable players devised it. Much like the Gravitational Laws are 'just a theory' they represent equations which are our theoretically optomised ways of calculating what events will occur in the real world. That doesn't mean there aren't better equations that are more optimal.

@@dmarsubExactly, this tas is driven by a human, just with infinite check points, macros and maybe slowmo.

TAS also isn't a robot, it's a human player with an input queue and slow motion. There is no AI that could make an effective TAS in a game like this. There's just a ton of misconceptions that can easily be fixed by doing a little research...
@TheUntamedNetwork

@@BetaDude40 I mean you can argue brute force algorithms are technically very simplistic AI's, it's hard not to classify the TAS doing 10 thousand basically random inputs followed by zipping across the map at mock 5 as human inputs

That's exactly how they make TAS runs. It's a just a guy or group of people using save states (checkpoints) and trying each trick over and over until they get it right. Then stitching together all of the inputs and playing it back.

There are tas which are based on human input but there are although some that are based on ai input. And if you train it with ai, it could have done multiple 1000 runs on the map. So there is much time to improve.

There are many games that were deemed "Theoretical best runs" That have been smashed with new strats. TAS is not a God player. It uses what is currently known for glitches. It also takes many runs to achieve what you see. Don't panic and accuse everyone of cheating because of these tools. It's not fair to the streamer that put in many hours into these games.
