Fun fact: Pat Smear, guitarist for the Germs and the Foo Fighters, was one of the background dancers of the music video for Raspberry Beret. He was almost kicked out during its filming because he couldn't quite keep in sync with the rest of the dancers. However, he was permitted to stay because, according to Grohl, one of the bodyguards relayed to Pat that Prince liked his hair. The degrees of seperation between Prince and hardcore punk/Foo Fighters are surprisingly low.

This man shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, was toe to toe with Michael Jackson, kept putting out song after song even through the eras of Grunge and Hiphop, gave The Weeknd his first American Music Award, and made a halftime show impossible to top. Prince isn’t just another artist, he is THE artist.

I'm from Minnesota and my band director told us how the old band director at Central (the high school Prince attended) gave Prince his own key to the practice room because he was there every morning before school to play the piano. He wasn't just a pop star, he was a true musician and that comes through in his music.

This Deep Discog Dive could not have been timed better. Up until very recently I never saw the appeal of Prince at all, but two months ago my mom passed away. While I wouldn’t say that Prince was her favorite artist, she still loved him a lot. After she died I decided to finally check out Prince and I now think he’s absolutely incredible. Definitely my best new artist this. It’s a shame that I was never able to talk to my mom about it but that’s alright. What isn’t a shame is getting a 2 hour video going through Prince’s entire career. Like always, you did such an amazing job. Thank you so much for making this video.

Mic touched on it but that super bowl halftime show is a legendary performance and still the best halftime show of all time. It felt like a true celebration of music with Prince classics mixed with covers of everything from CCR to the Foo Fighters. It's still the only halftime show to date to take place during a downpour which makes closing the show with Purple Rain an unforgettable experience. Legendary 🏆💜

Purple Rain is such a perfect song that at over 8 minutes long, I still sometimes wish it wouldn’t end.

I've been thinking for awhile that Prince was a DDD that needed to be done just due to his level of impact, but that the monolithic nature of the discography itself would make that challenging. Getting the notification for this vid and seeing that it's nearly two hours long, you've turned me into Jeff Goldblum. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it!

I totally get why you didn’t mention it, but Prince’s guest spot on ‘Givin’ Em What They Love’ by Janelle Monae is EXCELLENT. I wish they got to do more together, but his influence on their work has been so evident on Dirty Computer and The Age of Pleasure. Also, the full story behind ‘The Song of the Heart’ from Happy Feet is so funny because he initially turned down the filmmakers’ request to use ‘Kiss’. George Miller sent him a copy of the movie on appeal and Prince turned out to love it SO much, he granted permission for ‘Kiss’ and offered to write an original song.

I used to know a guy, not a friend, but an acquaintance, who fancied himself a guitar player. Not just a guitar player, but a blues guitar player. And he firmly held that Prince was just another 80s pop star, no more relevant or talented than someone like George Michael or Bobby Brown (I'm not knocking either of them, necessarily, just pointing out that there's a LONG league of difference between artists of that caliber and PRINCE). Then I had the opportunity to play him the video of that solo from the Hall of Fame. After watching the video, he didn't say anything for about ten seconds, then said, "Ok, so apparently, I need to rethink my entire life." YES. YES, YOU DO.

It really sucks that it took his death for me to get my hands on his music and understand how much of a legend this guy is

The thing about Prince is that he will always get respect as a musician's musician. The man plays a crazy amount of instruments, never bound himself to one genre, and always plays them with the idea of positivity and love in mind, even if it were vengeful. And as far as I know, he tried to rely on sincerity of the heart and mind when writing it. Regardless of the people who may have had problems in the past, there was no denying that his passion for art and music was infectious. Who you know can make an R&B, rock, jazz, gospel, rock, folk and pop album or song in the same album? HE may have had trouble as far as quality control, but you can't ever say it wasn't created with love for the craft.

Coming back to this to say “The man just seemed immortal. It doesn’t necessarily seem right that he’s not with us anymore” is exactly how I feel about all my relatives who are no longer with us. And even my parents, who luckily are still around, even though I know damn well they’re not immortal either. And now I’m crying a little. Thank you for this, sincerely ❤

For those who've never heard it, the great reissue label Numero Group released an excellent boxset a few years back called Purple Snow that documents the creation and evolution of the Minneapolis Sound and the entire scene that shaped Prince in the beginning. Well worth checking it out if you're into stellar if relatively unknown funk and R&B (plus it features some of Prince's earliest musical recordings to boot).

i'm 16 with parents that were young in the 70s and 80s and had no idea how many of prince's songs i actually knew. haven't heard too many, just the most popular (purple rain, little red corvette, 1999 etc) but i like them all so i feel like i may end up checking him out, even if i don't scratch the surface i'll still listen to the songs i know and see what else i like. putting out 39 albums over almost 4 decades takes serious dedication, and i can't even imagine the amount of time and effort put into only this ddd discussing it all. bravo mic the snare, bravo prince! may he rest in peace

Seeing Prince live before he died was one of my favourite experiences ever.

I remember where I was when Prince died too. I’d just started fully appreciating his work through Purple Rain and 1999. I was on a train when I read it. First thing I did was tell my friend who was also a super fan of his, and then I just immediately played Purple Rain. A few days after, Sometimes it Snows in April was everywhere in the UK as people remembered Prince through it. This was late April. And it started snowing. Honest to god snow in April. Never seen it before at that time of year, never seen it since. I’m not spiritual or theistic by any means, but that’s the one moment I thought that maybe someone gave us one last moment of beauty from a life after ours. And it could only have been someone as eternal as Prince. An incredible video, Mr. Snare. Amazing work for an amazing artist.

That story you had about discussing Prince after his death reminds me of a discussion I had with a French professor regarding the disbandment of Daft Punk, she loved them and their music, and she told us stories about living in Paris and seeing their impact on the French Club scene in the early 90s, it was nice to hear these stories from someone who was living in the heart of that scene during their.

It took me three full days to watch this so I can't imagine how many days you spent on it. As someone who casually engaged with Prince's discography before, this deep dive was SO educational, even if there's only so much you can say about nearly 40 albums. As always, you present information so concisely, so hilariously, and so creatively.

I had the pleasure of seeing Prince 4 times in concert over the years. The last time I saw him was in Detroit about a year before he passed. That show was as good or better than anything I saw prior. I first got into him during the Purple Rain era, then it was off to the races. I'm so glad to have had the chance to witness his greatness in person. Out of the 1000s of concerts I've seen, seeing Prince and seeing Michael Jackson on the Bad Tour are the ones I'm most grateful to have seen.

Prince was very serious about complete ownership. I couldn’t believe he was gone until his music started being uploaded again, with no problem. Circa 2010 I even got in trouble for “When Doves Cry” slowed & chopped. Good times.

Sign O' Times is a mind-blowing masterpiece. I grew up in the eighties and practically always worshipped the ground Prince walked on as a musician. He still has the strongest music catalog in all of popular music history. Some albums I agree were a little spotty but even those albums still had gems to be found. He will always be my favorite music artist of all time. My favorite Prince albums are Sign O' Times, Purple Rain, 1999, Around the World in A Day, Parade, Lovesexy, Dirty Mind, Diamonds and Pearls, Controversy, Love Symbol, Chaos and Disorder and Prince. Thanks for this excellent video of analysis of Prince's incredible output of music and albums when he was still living. Yes, Prince should still be with us making music.

I was at karaoke with some friends when Prince passed away. The room was underground so we got no service, but I had picked Purple Rain, and we sang it, not knowing that he had died. When I came out of that basement, my phone vibrated and it was a message from my mum saying he had passed. It was a really sunny day, which felt unfair to me? I got home and blasted all the songs I grew up on. I was in mourning for a long time. I guess Prince was so important to me because he spoke to so many parts of me that I probably would not have been able to explore given my upbringing. The fact that he's still giving magic to the world even after death is nothing short of incredible.

A few years ago I decided to check out a few of Princes songs and I immediately fell for him! This man was an absolute genius! Ever since that day Prince has been my favorite artist and at least in my opinion, nobody can compare to him. :)

Would love to see you do a DDD on The Beach Boys! They have such a fascinating history (the story of Brian Wilson alone could make for a whole video by itself) and diverse discography. They're not mentioned as much as other groups like the Beatles when it comes to being influential, but I believe they definitely left their mark on music. Also--there's a great biopic about them called Love and Mercy, would recommend to anyone who likes the band or is interested in music production

I think I was in a similar situation like you when I heard about Prince’s death, except I was in 5th or 6th and my school would have morning announcements through the tvs in each classroom and it would talk about current events and his death was one of them. I never really listened to him much before but after it I started to listen to his music and learn who he was and wasn’t until much later that I realized what an absolute loss we had of a legend and music virtuoso.

Firstly, can I just say: your relief in the outro cannot be touched. And that in itself is a testament to the dedication you have for us-which is in no way unappreciated, btw. Now for some thoughts: it breaks my heart to know that Prince was the same age my mom is now when he passed. It just reminds me how short life is and how crucial it is to go after the things we want most. And my GOD if Prince isn’t a testament to that! I’ll admit I’ve never been very familiar with him apart from his legacy and my mom often mentioning that he was one of her favorite artists in the 80’s. But I have soooo much respect for his integrity and dedication to owning his work, especially when the odds were so deeply stacked against him as a Black man. Also, your story of the day he passed reminds me so much of my memory of the day after the 2016 election. I had stayed up till 2am constantly checking the results and walked into my 9am class the next day beyond crushed and exhausted. And instead of discussing whichever educational psychologist we were studying, we used the class as a group therapy session to discuss the state of the world. Absolutely wild how these events can shape our identities. I could write a book on that, honestly! (As if I wasn’t writing one here lmao) Oh, and your mention towards the beginning of it being good to judge things by their covers had me cackling because as a librarian, I always judge books by their covers. I mean, cover designers literally exist to make people more likely to buy a book based on their snap decisions lol. I can only imagine the amount of market analysis that must go into the job. Anyway, thank you times a million again for yet another work of art! Even your “product placement” had just the right amount of earnestness to keep me grinning the whole time (and yeah, I absolutely wanna check them out now-ty for the rec!) Have heard most of these. I got into him around late 2019 but i remember my sophomore year of high-school was when he passed. We sang "purple rain" in choir to tribute him and its probably one of the first real songs that affected me. I didnt get into the man's music until he passed but like you said there is something immortal about him.

Let's go man. I love Prince, I was in my last year of middle school when he tragically passed. And a year later I visited Paisley Park. It was a phenomenal experience.

Having been born long after 1989 and batmania, knowing that prince did a batman album is the silliest and coolest thing ever. I bought the cd and vinyl. I wish WB re-released it cuz it goes for a pretty penny.

Prince was somebody that I was aware for a good amount of my life, but he wasn't someone who I fully appreciate (I mostly was more into Michael Jackson and other music artists) and would say that one of my top ten favorite music artists and acrs and even my musical heroes (along with Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix, a common thread of the three are black men in rock music, which I think that there’s something I wanna see more of these days of black rockstars) until I fully went through his discography at his prime and after his passing. My favorite all time Prince song is I would die 4 u, and my favorite Prince album is Sign O the Times.

Prince was a pop rebel. He was incredibly diverse in sound and subject matter and I've always thought the world of him but never really took the deep dive into his discography. I might do that now. I was in the car with my mom driving along the road, and I remember seeing the news on my phone and telling my mom that Prince passed away. She had to pull over, and frankly I don't blame her. There will never be another artist like him. Thank you so much for making this video.
