BACKGROUND
The Strokes are an American rock band from New York City. Formed in 1998, the band is composed of singer Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. They were a leading group of the early-2000s indie rock revival. They’re most well-known for their debut album Is This It, as well as the songs “Last Nite,” “Reptilia,” and “You Only Live Once.”

1. The poll for the next DDD is in the description! Go vote if you want a say in who gets covered next time. 2. This one is another redo! The Strokes was the first band I ever covered for the DDD back in early 2019. It’s kinda surreal to see how much the series has changed since then. The old one has been made unlisted, but the link is in the description if you want to watch it. Thanks everyone!

fun fact: alberts father was also a singer songwritter of his own and had a UK hit single in the 70s that has some resemblance to radiohead’s creep (mostly due to some of the chords), after taking legal action, albert ended up having a writing credit meaning he has a bag on all sales creep makes, making it most likely his biggest hit lol

As a person who found Reptilia whilst at a party in middle school, playing guitar hero 3 back in 2007… I can say I am your comment personified. I was very into Metal and such at the time , lots of Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, etc.. I thought The Strokes were too soft for my liking. Well, I downloaded juice box by accident on limewire along with reptilia which peaked my interest. I then checked out Last Nite, Someday and never looked back. I can say without a doubt that the reason why I love them now and will always enjoy them is because of the sheer nostalgia that they bring me, looking back on my teens through early adult years. It is 2022 and I still listen to them consistently, and probably always will. Just wanted to share my love for The Strokes with you all.

I've always had a soft spot for On The Other Side, I won't lie. Lyrically, it's Julian at his most blunt and vulnerable. The way the chorus evolves from 'nobody's waiting for me' to 'I know you're waiting for me' feels like him coming to terms with a difficult change in his life, or maybe forgiving his problematic father. One of my favourite songs on this album for sure.

I found Albert’s stuff through playing Forza Horizon 3, which featured 2 of Albert’s songs from his album “Momentary Masters,” those being “Losing Touch” and “Caught by My Shadow.” I didn’t find the Strokes for another 7 months, and when I did the first song I listened to was Reptilia. On the Otherside is in my top 3 favorite Stroke songs of all time and my favorite off of First Impressions. Let me tell you why. I stumbled across this song about a month after my father died. Before his death, I had a lot of anger towards him because he wasn’t in my life after 13 and I thought to myself “why should I give a fuck about that man who wasn’t there for me?” I felt nothing but anger being at his side in the hospital and left back to my hometown before he passed. Then he passed and it’s so fucking true what people say. You never know what you have until you lose it. Until it’s gone forever and you realize you’re never hearing that persons voice again. My dad wasn’t perfect by any means, but in my early years he gave me a wonderful childhood, he was present, involved, and a loving father. Yeah it might not have been a perfect life but it was still worth living. The older I get I realize how flawed humans are and everyone is still trying to figure things out even at an old age. I think how possible it is for me to fuck up just as bad as my father did even while striving to be better. I thought “What if I don’t do better? What if with the same circumstances he had, I would have done the same?” Maybe I just didn’t wanna hate him anymore because I missed him so much. Then I heard “On the Otherside” and I balled my eyes out. I see this song through the eyes of my father The verses make me picture my dad absolutely done with life. He couldn’t talk while I was there, but I assumed who he was as a person is still in there. I feel there are regrets he had and there are people he wished he wouldn’t hate but can’t and that in and of itself makes him hate himself more and want to die. The Bridge is the only part I view through my eyes. One of my favorite memories is my dad doing what the lyrics say and teaching me how to sing on my grandfathers kareoke speaker when I was around 5 or 6. And then there’s the fucking chorus Again through the eyes of my father, I sing these lyrics picturing I am him on the hospital bed. I imagine he’s scared and knows what’s coming next. It’s his final chapter on Earth coming to a close and going to the “Otherside”, and maybe he knew how I felt towards him at the hospital. Maybe that’s how he thought everyone felt towards him. He felt he knew what waited for him on the “Otherside”. He felt he would be forgotten. He felt unloved. He felt his sins had caught up and because he wasn’t perfect he deserved the fate he got. I feel so bad I didn’t comfort him in his final days. I feel so bad I waited for him to die to miss him and remember the good times. I feel so bad imagining what he felt there as he waited for what’s to come on the Otherside.

@@Andyanddiana467 thanks for answering me. I won an autograph from an auction that has all of the guys signatures. The guy who originally had it said they were all really nice. He said he used to do publicity for local bands and he was selling all of his stuff. The only thing that really stands out that he told me was that the guys liked goofing around a lot and joking. He said it was funny listening to them tease each other too. Somehow that doesn't surprise me.😊

I fucking love the grit of first impressions, to me it sounds like good grain on a photograph, it just gives it the texture it needs for it to comunicate the sound according to the feelings they wanted to evoke. It could have been cleaner or lighter but it's an artistic choice in the end and Im all for it, on most genres.
