There are so many different kinds of mushrooms in a forest. Some of them are edible - and super delicious! But others contain poisons that are toxic to eat. Which kind of mushroom are these? Join me in another close up look at wild mushrooms -- and play the game "Will I Eat This or Not?"
Here's how the game goes. I will show some key features of these mushrooms that will allow you to mull over whether I will eat them or not. Then, I will go through the steps and thought process I use to identify the mushrooms and decide whether I will eat them or not.
To identify these mushrooms, I am using 2 different keys, which are great tools for focusing on specific features of a mushroom and making "either-or" decisions that ultimately lead to figuring out what kind it is. To find out the general type of mushroom I've got, I use the inside cover from the book, "All That The Rain Promises and More", by David Arora. And then I use the book, "Mushrooms Demystified", also by David Arora.

Join me in using two identification keys to decide what this mushroom is -- and Will I Eat It or Not? It can take time to work through all the choices in a mushroom key, but they are a good way to learn what features are important to identify mushrooms. I hope you enjoy this video!

It's hard to identify some mushrooms just from looking at the top. This one does have a resemblance to a Reishi. There's a lot more to this mushroom, too. It's an amazing one, even though we can't eat it. I'm glad you found your way to my channel, Kimberly Gates!

I rather die from cancer than eating something that can kill you quicker than cancer see cancer can form ether later or soon but you can be 50 years old as then bam but you live and enjoy life ok your gonna eventually die from cancer anyway but a mushroom can take you about in a couple of hours of you screaming puking your guts up writhing in agony worse than cancer you don't mess with plants they can take you out quickly

@@HaphazardHomestead yes Holly Chris, it is very easy to be excited and enthusiastic about finding flavorful tastie plants and mushrooms. I want to be certain, along with others, not to be mistaken in foraging native edibles. I'm trusting your advice to enjoy watching your videos. Especially, to the end, where you set your table up with your beverage & biscuit, ready to enjoy eating to finish. In appreciation for the clean preparation of the meal and chuckle.😉😅 I've liked discovering varieties every other year to see how well wild plants reseed themselves, yes it's fascinating. Since, I was a young girl, my forging started on my family Homestead. We still own the property today. Things may look like we're selling the property. And that there will be new owners some day. I hope, they would enjoy what we enjoyed, over the many years. I hope, they will be farmers, who enjoy wild plants. Thanks SINCERELY 😀😝🤢🥵🤠🇨🇦

Ganoderma was my first guess but the farther you went with the description I was sure it was not that! Turkey tail? Never saw one that big. Or fleshy. So no way. I identified some platterful mushrooms in my woods a few days ago with my new Audubon mushroom field guide. After checking and rechecking I cooked them well and ate up the whole mess while reading about how to cook and eat foraged wild mushrooms so no spare for just in case something bad happened. They were delicious and I'm still here commenting with no ill effects. I probably would not have tried them without my new book and would have missed a tasty treat! Keep up the identification teaching. I love it.

Well done! That was a very useful lesson on using a key for beginners, and you made it lots of fun, too. My Christmas present to me last year was Lassoe/Thomas' Fungi of Temperate Europe. Lots to study in there, beyond my other two handbooks. Not fair that I guessed P. schweinitzii right away, because I have a friend who collects mushrooms and plants (I keep my avocado and onion peels for her) for textile dyeing. The 'fuzzy' clue gives it right away, as does it's pretty yellow ruffled edge. Can't wait to see your hair - or whatever else you dye with it! As a recent adherent, I really need to catch up on your back issues. Stay well, Holly.

Oh, my, I'm glad they all recovered. No one should ever eat a mushroom they're not 110% sure of. It's best to go with an experienced mentor or group and learn a few reliable ones well each season. Fortunately there are several edibles that are easy to recognize, so no need to get into the gray areas before you're ready. Here in France, you can take your finds to the pharmacy to have them verified. They may not know all the unusual ones, but they can confirm the most common.

Good choice, The Gardening Astronomer! Other wild mushrooms are worth eating, though. :D

Using "Will I eat this" is a horrible way to attract viewers. You're a legitimate KZfaqr with valuable info not a teenager eating a tide pod on a dare. Be a grown-up, we need them

It's not been long since l learned of a young man eating a mushroom out in the wild that probably looked mighty good to him - it surely wasn't good For him as it was deadly poison with NO cure. He got to hang around for a few days knowing he was dying and there was no hope of his survival. Knowing this, if l am not trained by a professional - in person - my mushroom experiences will be limited to stores, restaurants and people who are wealthy that those l leave behind can sue the hell out of. 💀

When I lived in Michigan in the 1980s, there was a series of heartbreaking cases of families eating Deadly Galerina (Galeriana marginata) mixed in with Honey mushrooms (Armillaria mellea). So tragic, every step of the way. It taught me that correct identification is important - and making sure that each and every mushroom is the right kind. For the mushrooms I eat, I trust my own ID more than the dried mix of imported wild mushrooms for sale in a store. And restaurants have made some mistakes, like putting raw morels in salads. That didn't end well, although people only got sick. So I'm with you on the 'be careful' side of things, Cecil Barnett!
