I went for a walk in a rich, dense forest and found two strange-looking mushrooms. So I though you might like to play a game I call -- Will I Eat This, Or Not?
Here's how the game goes. I will show some key features of these mushrooms that will allow you to mull over whether I will eat them or not. Then, I will go through the steps and thought process I use to identify the mushrooms and decide whether I will eat them or not.
-------
These are Lobster mushrooms, Hypomces lactiflourum. They are an oddball fungus that parasitizes other mushrooms. In this case, the Hypomyces has taken over a short-stemmed Russula, Russula brevipes. The Hypomyces is specific about which mushrooms they parasitize.
I enjoy eating lobster mushrooms. At the end of this video, I show some outtakes of cooking them and using them to make grilled stuffed squash flowers. They were delicious!
To identify these mushrooms, I am using a key. An identification key is a great tool for focusing on specific features of a mushroom and making "either-or" decisions that ultimately lead to figuring out what kind it is. To find out the general type of mushroom I've got, I use the inside cover from the book, "All That The Rain Promises and More", by David Aurora.
The book I use in this video: All That the Rain Promises and More, by David Aurora. Ten Speed Press.

Lobsters and chanterelles were the first mushrooms I seriously *hunted*. That is, the first time I really researched where they're likely to grow, what their season is, and how to identify the trees they're associated with. Then I got lucky and found a bunch, just a few minutes walk down a public trail. It might be the most exciting, gratifying thing that's happened this season, and I miiiight have cried a little on a chanterelle.

These mushrooms are common in the western side of Canada, Nelson, British Columbia. They are often found near one another so if you find one, be sure to keep looking within the radius of that mushroom to find even more! :)

I eat a lot of different wild mushrooms. Lobsters are some of my favorites. But I've never had a wild mushroom I didn't enjoy, too, lol. I think it's a matter of unlocking the best ways to prepare them, which can differ so much from one kind to another. Have fun with your fungi!

Thankyou for this video and for documenting the unusual shape they took! I think what I found here in the north east is a patch of lobster mushrooms, but I still am not sure because I can't find any info on if Russula brevipes grows from dead wood as well as soil. Because what I found looks exactly like a huge (at least half the size of what it's attached to) growth that has lots of lobes and folds, and it smelled of fish, and was firm to the touch.

According to your guide I found chanterelles. That's still okay for me! I'm still going to look it up in my Audubon Field guide but I'm pretty sure that's what I found. In fact when I first saw them that was my first inclination. I've eaten chanterelles before and they're delicious! Little disappointed they weren't lobster mushrooms though.
@HaphazardHomestead
@HaphazardHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Chanterelles are great! Their stems will come apart lengthwise, like string cheese. Their "gills" are more like folds. It is chanterelle season in your area right now. The lobsters will be later. And they have a definite crust on the outside. I have found the lobsters in Arkansas in September. But the Chanterelles come first, in the summer.
@AnnsTinyLife
@AnnsTinyLife 4 жыл бұрын
@@HaphazardHomestead I didn't harvest all of them. There were plenty more and some of them look like they were just coming up. So I think I'm going to have a chanterelle feast pretty soon! After I clearly identify them though that is. I need to cut those stems open.

Hi Chris, great video! I've been messing around lately with "wild" brews and was wondering if you ever found the feral hops you were looking for? Still haven't seen them by the Willamette although I did find a feral grape that's done wonders as a yeast starter.
@HaphazardHomestead
@HaphazardHomestead 6 жыл бұрын
So neat that you are doing some brewing, wild style! James Townsend and Sons had a recent video showing some 1700s-style brewing that's inspired me. Maybe you'll do a video, too! :D I haven't found any feral hops, only my garden hops. I canoed down and camped on an island in the Willamette River for the eclipse, right at the line of totality. I kept my eyes open for feral hops, but didn't find any. There are so many hops grown commercially right along that stretch, there's got to be some there!

The Lobster mushroom is a fun one to find. It's got a wide range across North America, where ever it's wet! It's in the southeast US and Mexico, too. You will know it when you see it, because it sure is different! That bright color, the hard and pimpled surface, growing from the forest floor, white inside.

Maybe you would like his other book, "Mushrooms Demystified". It's 959 pages of technical jargon. Same author, two different approaches to helping people know more about mushrooms. They tie together well. The little book references the pages in the bigger book. They are a great combination of fun and facts.

I'll check it out. I just couldn't take a person seriously with a joking attitude on the cover....Maybe just a bad choice for his cover I presume. I checked the review on his Mushrooms Demystified book. I just purchased in online. I like the jargon myself. LOL

They can look pretty rotten! As they get older and turn more reddish-orange, they start to smell like stuff along the seashore. But I don't think they have a lobster taste, especially compared to mushrooms like the Lion's Mane (Herecium erinaceus). They are both delicious, though.
