Addie! Thanks so much for doing this one. I see "Armageddon" out the wazoo; every corner I turn, it's there; every reactor is doing it. It is an entertaining film, but "Deep Impact" is a film that tugs at the heart. It's warm, thoughtful, and serious. It's so overlooked by reactors. I guess if you like wham-bam, then it might not be your cup of tea; but I find this film emotionally compelling and something that I could watch repeatedly. Kudos to Mimi Leder, the director, for crafting this wonderful film.

It's weird how often two similar movies come out near each other like this. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," "K-9" and "Turner and Hooch," "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," and more recently "The Equalizer" and "John Wick." It's just a really interesting phenomenon.
@emperorlelouch8515
@emperorlelouch8515 4 ай бұрын
I recall seeing an explanation of this phenomenon. They are called "twin films." It occurs when two similar scripts enter production around the same time, because multiple studios consider the shared idea to have market appeal and compete to see who can put it out first.

Armageddon and Deep Impact came out in 1998, just a few years after the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 collided with Jupiter in July, 1994. That was the first time that anyone witnessed a planet-comet collision, and it generated much subsequent discussion about what can conceivably be done, if something similar were to be on a crash course with the earth. Armageddon and Deep Impact both came out in the midst of those discussions, so in the context of the time, it was not too surprising that both films appeared at about the same time.

Through 1997 one of the big news stories doing the rounds was the idea that an extinction level event could happen at any moment, and the theories of how it might dealt with were explored. Really freaked me out as a kid. Responding to that two studios decided to make films that used that concept. The first one out was Deep Impact, about 5 weeks before Armageddon. Didn't make as much money as Armageddon but didn't cost as much - wasn't full of bankable named stars. The difference in tone between the two films is startling. I always preferred the more serious dramatic tone of Deep Impact over the kind of tongue in cheek humour and gung-honess of Armageddon. I remember thinking, when I saw Armageddon, 'Why can't they take it seriously?' I took the threat seriously and I was pissed, at the time, that Armageddon didn't really. Felt that would lead to people not taking it seriously... Now question is, do you take it seriously? Was I right? Are we ignoring the chance of saving the human race because we saw Armageddon, so don't take the threat necessarily seriously enough to invest any time and effort in space projectile monitoring? For the record this was directed by one of the very few female directors working in Hollywood at the time, Mimi Leder. She also directed the first Dreamworks feature film, The Peacemaker (I believe Deep Impact was the second). She would go on to direct Pay It Forward (2000) with Helen Hunt (Twister), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) and Kevin Spacey (think you know him). If you've not seen it, add it to your list. The term 'pay it forward' was coined by that film, if you've ever heard that expression.

Just be thankful we have Jupiter and Saturn out there hoovering up all the wayward rocks and iceballs that decide to take a vacation in the inner orbits, most of the time... me personally, if it turned out we had no chance to survive id take it as an opportunity to witness something few have ever seen as a last act.

The fun part is that we pass through the Taurid meteor stream every October and the tail fragments of Haley's comet every October. October is a very big month for sky watching and every 2,500 to 3,000 years it gets dicey. Good reaction. Gives you things to ponder.

The best most recent film of the genre, hands down. Deep Impact has always been my favorite, and Greenland took 2nd place with ease.❤ I loved the focus on the emergency professionals, and their willingness to do the job in the face of inevitable destruction. That piece of the theme definitely elevated it while keeping it grounded in realism.

The time for the spaceship to work on moving the big piece was right after they first realized it didn't work - they only needed to shift the orbit a little bit that far away - waiting until it almost hit earth is ludicrous. Great movie though - and so was Armageddon (with more science mumbo jumbo but with wonderful character arcs)

They waited because they didn't discover that the outgassing from approaching the sun had created a tunnel directly to the core of the big one. If that hadn't happened their nukes would just have shed the outer skin like the first set did.

I have a hard time believing that the impact would take out Atlanta. Atlanta is at significant altitude. It is very far from being a coastal or coastal plain city. Hurts to watch the wave destroy NYC with the Twin Towers intact, knowing what's happening on 9/11, just two years later. (I'm tired of watching NYC get it. Why not destroy Chicago for a change? I know, I know, nobody would gaf, but still.) For more of Maximillian Schell (Jenny's dad), check out "Judgement at Nuremberg" (1961). Best Picture, Best Actor for Max, and a young William Shatner to boot!

Lituya Bay wave reached a peak height of 1,700 feet. This would likely be bigger. Atlanta is only at 1000 feet, with flat land between it an the coast. Dont think Atlanta would survive.

A guilty pleasure of mine. Lol. The concept is so batshit and they somehow made their pseudoscience sensible in a way. It expects the audience to kind of just accept some silly things, but once you get over those humps, it's actually pretty great. Feels like a sub-par project someone was kind of handed and they somehow dug their way in and out of it with skilled storytelling. Lol And Stanley Tucci. That's all I gotta say.😂 I reference the empty-space static scene when discussing the way our deep space probes coded their data, and their sensors told NASA that the outer edge of the solar system was on fire.😂😂 It was plasma.

Studios and production companies pay each other's employees to be spies. Do leaks on what projects are in early development but fast-tracked. That's why we had: Wyatt Earp, and Tombstone Antz, and A Bug's Life Turner and Hooch, and K-9 Braveheart, and Rob Roy The movie "Outbreak," which was NOT based on the Robin Cook novel of the same name, and the TV movie "Virus," which WAS based on that novel

There's a lesser known end of the world disaster movie called "These Final Hours" (2013). It begins 10 minutes after an Asteroid hits the earth and a huge unstoppable wall of fire slowly encircles the earth. The last survivors are in Perth, Australia. One man who only wants to party and get drunk and take drugs to numb the coming holocaust, sees a little girl who's been kidnapped and about to get gang raped. He decides instead to try and rescue her.... Some other people think they can survive within a small underground backyard bunker....Other people just want to party, party, party! BTW 13 years ago Britney Spears did an end of the world music video called "Till the World Ends".

I saw both Armageddon and Deep Impact when they came out in theaters and I loved them both. I do not think one was necessarily better than the other, but I felt that Deep Impact,, for me, had more of an emotional punch. Not to mention that great score by the late, great James Horner. He made some great music in his time on this world. And I recommend looking for some of Morgan Freeman's early roles from before he became the name he is today. The earliest movie I can remember seeing him in is the 1980 film Brubaker, with Robert Redford. It was only a small scene, but he was in it.

I don't know how to time stamp in a comment, but at 3:24 you're looking out on the West River of the Chesapeake Bay. The little strip of land sticking out from the left is a summer camp and retreat center. I worked there for probably 10+ years and attended as a kid. I was there as a camper the days they were filming. Our counselor snuck us off property so we could stand in the road just down from the shoot and watch what was going on. Gorgeous place. In the actual film they pan onto the property a bit more, but CGI'ed out a lot of the buildings and such.

"Fun" fact: Some of the work Gene Shoemaker (a geologist and astronomer) did showed that there is a limit to how much energy a single impactor can impart on the planet regardless of its mass. So in reality the plan to break up a city-sized asteroid into smaller pieces would lead to multiple "max damage" impacts rather than one just one.

Yep. So, saving earth by blowing the big comet to bits, is the worst inaccuracy in this otherwise fairly accurate movie. We have to deflect the comet/asteroid instead.
