The release of "Top Gun Maverick" has once again been slid to the right, this time moving to November 19, 2021. Obviously, Paramount and Tom Cruise want to ensure conditions are right for full theaters, etc. After waiting 35 years for the sequel, fans of the franchise and Naval Aviation are champing at the bit but are doing their best to be patient.
In the meantime, what can we glean from the two extended trailers and other associated "behind the scenes" footage that has been released? What might the plot be? How did they shoot the flying scenes? Did they get it right from a carrier aviator's POV?

Back when I was at Gulfstream, I met Tom Cruise and his then wife Nicole Kidman at delivery up in Appleton Wi. Pretty cool guy and we talked flying for 20 min or so while the "suits" were doing what they do. I delivered the aircraft to his pilot who I had helped instruct in the new jet. Got a photo and an autograph which still hangs on my "love me wall" along with a few others I met!

Interesting. Speaking of Gulfstream, I have spent a number of years flying them, including some of the earlier ones like the GII and GIII. I watched some of Wards other videos about the Tomcat and it struck me that the weights were similar to some of the GIII weights. Maybe Grumman just liked the thought of a 40k-ish zero fuel weight and a 58k-ish max landing weight? Since they were Grumman’s from a similar era?

Very cool. I grew up a few miles west of ATW, attended Neenah high, and took flying lessons out of MaxAir at ATW in the early '00's as a teenager. Later, I worked the ramp for Delta at ATW, and got to see the newly painted Gultstreams just on the other side of the fence. I've lived in several places around the country and now abroad, and it seems like I'm always learning more about how big aviation is in the place I grew up.

When I was in my mid teens, I lived in San Diego. One day I was walking along Blacks Beach and heard the distinctive sound of Military jet engines. I looked behind me and slightly out to sea, and a pair of F-14's were flying along the beach between 1000 and 1500 feet altitude. As they got near blacks beach, the lead pilot pulled a very snappy aileron roll for the very naked people on the beach. It was truly one of the highlights of my teens. I've loved the F-14 ever since. Such a beautiful aircraft.

I was serving in the Navy when the first Top Gun movie came out and I can tell you it was a real morale booster when we were out at sea and running plane guard for the carriers. Seeing the F-14's flying low over my destroyer when coming in to land gave me goose bumps every time. Believe it or not, some of us were actually hoping for some military action to happen to break up the boredom aboard ship. With all the training and simulations we did, we were very confident in our capabilities. Excellent job with your video and I think you are on the right track with the plot of the new movie.

My theory is Cruise is a Hornet pilot/instructor and gets selected to the SR72 project, gets shot down, they try to rescue him and one also gets shot down. Grew up, became a Marine parachute rigger/air delivery specialist and have been working in some form of air cargo most of my adult life. Thank you for your channel and awesome insight. I can riminess of back in the day and continue learning. Prayers to Capt. Snodgrass, family, and sorry for your loss. I met "Snort" at an airshow back in the day of the F-14 demo. BZ!!! I just found your channel. I've an interesting story for you. I'm a retired Navy pilot. I had 7 years active duty and 13 in the reserves, retiring in 1992. On a drill weekend, shortly after the movie was released, we were in the BOQ, drinking beer and discussing the movie. One of our pilots was working as a 747 F/E for NWA (now Delta). He commented that he'd flown a lot of cargo flights out of Hong Kong that were carrying novelties. He believed that he had "flown a cargo plane full of rubber dogsh*t out of Hong Kong". At the time, he was based in Seattle, and earning $75k/year. He thought it was a pretty good deal. My son-in-law and his buddies were big fans of the movie. At their wedding, he and his buddies surrounded our daughter, singing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". It was an awesome sight!

I have a theory on the plot. Maverick is now a test pilot, flying the "SR-72". This happens right at the beginning of the film. Something happens where he is forced to eject, losing the aircraft. Shift to the scene of Mav and Ed Harris. Going to guess that Ed Harri's character no longer wants to deal with Mav, so he is given orders back to Top Gun. Then a special mission comes up, where Maverick has to train some younger pilots for the mission. Of course, he runs into Goose's son, and we get that tension between the two. After training, the group is sent to the ship and launches out on this mission. During the mission, I'm going to guess Rooster gets shot down, followed by Maverick. Remember the photos of Cruise and Teller in the snow in Lake Tahoe? While trying to find a way to escape, they find the Tomcat, steal it and make their way back to the carrier. Going to guess there will be some sort of dogfight, resulting in the Tomcat being damaged. They make it back to the carrier, but have to take the barricade (photos were seen of a Tomcat on the TR, snagged in the barricade. Maverick and Rooster bury the hatchet and I'm going to guess Maverick finally takes his promotion, or he leaves the Navy. The reason they didn't use the JHMCS helmets is because it doesn't use a clear visor, since the tinted visor has HUD symbology on it. That, and as you had mentioned, you can't see the actors faces.

I think this is pretty damn close! I am sure that maverick and rooster are shot down behind enemy lines and somehow find that F-14 and fly it out to the TR and “crash it in to the barricade”. All I know is there was no actual F-14 that flew for this one because there was no F-14 available that was in good enough repair for flying! The one in the movie came from the museum in Mirimar, I believe and was repainted just for the movie and restored to its old exterior glory after! Time will tell and whenever paramount decides they want to let the movie release, we may get to finally see it! We’ve waited this damn long! If it gets pushed past November 2021 though I am sure I will….still wait🙄

I've heard this story a few times, but never seen it substantiated. I think it takes from a very old joke in aviation about about a large airliner (pick an era and it would be a 707, 747, DC-10, A380, whatever) being told to hold at a fix for sequencing to land. The upset captain then tells ATC, "It costs us $10,000 for every 4 minute hold!" The ATC then responds, "Roger. I need $20,000 of hold then."

I am not an aviator or pilot. Videos I have watched do say it is best to land into the wind. Does this explanation of why turning the carrier around for a sunset shot was denied hold water with anyone who knows more about carrier landings?
@ParkerUAS
@ParkerUAS 3 жыл бұрын
@@glennquagmire3258 , it does make sense. Having a tailwind (wind pushing the plane) means the speed over the deck on landing is higher. That means more inertia for the cables to stop as well as a more difficult approach in general. Definitely a sound reason to not get landing shots at sunset.

As an AO, I really liked the cinematography in Flight Of The Intruder. Bombs don't always get the screen time that air-to-air missiles do, and they went to the extra effort of showing how the retarding fins work.
