We pit the Ford Bronco against the Land Rover Defender in an off-road battle to see which is better. The new Bronco certainly offers better tires from the factory, but can the Land Rover keep up with its off-road technology? See how for Defender fares against this Ford.

The Landrover has long been an Off-Road ICON around the World - Tackling deserts, Jungles, Tundra and everything in between. The Bronco (albeit an Iconic name) is relatively new to the game and being better than the landrover would certainly give it an edge in solidifying its position in the market.
This was a great chance to show the best on road and offroad skills that both vehicles have! Mud, Water, rocks and dry pavement - We found it and four wheeled it all! Family cruising or serious outdoor enthusiast? Take note of this one!

But yeah... The Defender essentially has street tires whereas the Bronco had a proper mud terrain beefy tire. It was basically no competition, which is what I expected. This comparison basically proves how important a proper tire is on your rig when you want to go wheeling. If you're on a street tire, you cannot expect your rig to perform well... Even if you have the most capable optioned Defender, or Bronco, or Wrangler, etc... Without a proper tire, you will be in trouble. 😆😭👍🏼

In my view Land Rover has hit a sweet spot with the new Defender. I think it’s a mistake to say they failed because it’s not like the old Defender or better off road than a Rubicon or a Bronco. The market has spoken, Land Rover has found a market niche with little or no competition and they’re exploiting it well. The proof is a top spec Defender costs more than the new Range Rover SE, and they can’t build them fast enough. In reality that extra 1%….5% of off road prowess you might get with a less civilized alternative isn’t worth it to the Buyers of the new Defender. If I want a kick-ass off roader I’ll buy an old Jeep that someone else has already modified and use it on the reality extreme stuff, the other 99% of the time I’ll much more happily drive the new Defender.

I fully agree with you regarding the Defender, but let’s be real, 95% of the people spending 100K on a luxury SUV Land Rover will never take the vehicle off pavement, let along off-roading. Sure, the Sasquatch package is a factory option. It's hardly a fair comparison still. The Wild Track costs 60% more than the base version for the extra features and upgraded tires. Should have had AT tires on the Defender. And, when he was still struggling with the mud, he switched to the rock crawl. That made no sense. Hardly a real comparison. Still a fun video to watch though.

How it should be compared? LOL that is so stupid. A vehicle and the abilities and a technology put into it need proper grip. Having the same tires would give the technology involved in both a fair opportunity. Saying the way they come is the way you test it is very very very stupid. Land Rover knows people are going to put off-road tires they just don't because when you first buy it it's more comfortable and quiet and they know you can afford to put off-road tires.

Why it doesn’t shut off in low range I have no idea. But you need to manually switch it off, regardless of the Terrain Mode you are using. The only exception is the Sand Mode which allows far more wheel slip. But will have a different throttle map. @@Adam_Rosenberg91 4-low is rarely a good idea through deep mud because low speed through deep mud is a good way to get stuck. It is the exact opposite of rock crawling. Sand/mud modes allow for unlimited wheel spin and require higher RPMs, often higher than 4-low will allow. The advantage of 4-low is to allow feathering of the throttle in tricky areas and to engage lockers, but the additional torque is not needed when there is low traction. I would never advise faster speeds through deep water, but it is more advantageous in mud in the absence of deep water.

TFL had the same issue with their Land Rover with the street tires. To truly test it you have to put on some AT tires, or at least HT tires. But Land Rover owners don’t often go off road which is why the tires suck.

Why are Land Rovers so expensive now?they used to make off-road vehicles for everyone, now they make off-road vehicles for rich people who will never go off-road Don’t get me wrong I love the new defender but it’s priced way too high and I’m talking about us prices,I feel so sorry for the Canadians above us

Over priced off-road vehicles that never go off-road only every come back to the dealership for oil changes. Low priced off-road vehicles come back with all kinda issues that are covered under warranty at the dealership’s expense. They know exactly what they’re doing.

Great video. I think it confirms what my initial thoughts of both vehicles are in that the Bronco out of the box is extremely impressive and likely has a higher ceiling for extreme off road. The Defender being a global vehicle is limited on tire sizes in order to appeal to a larger market where 35's arent the norm and aren't readily available. I think with a better tire, maybe a 33" it will help immensely, and the Land Rover traction control will kick in to allow it to do some amazing things, but the tires aren't capable of keeping up with it when you're at slow speeds in these kinds of conditions. I would kive to see someone put a set of good tires on the Defender and then really compare them to the Bronco and Jeep to see how it performs.

I read Jacky Stewart's (auto)biography and he talks about his time with Ford during the time they owned JLR. I still see RR when I see a new Explorer or even Lincoln. What lengths a company , will go to to get design.

The defender needs too many modifications to be good and let’s not even talk about the price and reliability. The bronco is a beast out of the dealership and it’s so much cheaper and still very nice. It’s a no brainer.

@@interestingwaytoexplore4848 Many others have not been as lucky... "That being said, the things that CR didn’t like about the Defender weren’t crazy. The 2021 Land Rover Defender got an overall score of 45/100. The main killer was the predicted reliability score of 1 / 5. This score is based on reports from owners of previous models. Land Rover has not had the best reliability track record over the years. This doesn’t mean the new Defender WILL have problems, but it suggests that it might. This will kill any vehicle on Consumer Reports." The TFL Channel had an absolute nightmare with multiple new Defenders...

I really don’t think it’s the 35s as much as it is the actual tire and tread pattern. Almost not even worth comparing the two without having them on the same tires. Don’t get me wrong I love the video it’s just not a true depiction of the capability of the defender.

Despite of LandRover claims... Defender is only a luxury a SUV. Instead Bronco is a real offroad and do really much more than this nice video has shown. You can see Broncos in Rubicon trail... I don't think you may find any new Defender (olds one for sure, but none new one). Till now in all KZfaq video I have seen about Defender, I have only seen really basic dirt or muddy roads... but anytime ROADS... that for definition is not "offroad" !! Everybody talking about those simple patterns claims Defender doing something really valuable... to try to make the people not think about the easiness of the pattern in front of really hard ones. Everybody try to convince the people Defender is a real offroader... but simply it isn't...! Defender is not more than an old Touareg... that is a luxury SUV, not an offroad.

I think some of us have forgotten that Ford owned Land Rover for a few years so I would guess that alot of off road technology was shared. I also think put the same tires on tha Land Rover and the test would be a better. Thanks for the comparison.

The Defender needs better tires, but it is definitely the more rounded car of the group. The Bronco is a solid off roader and costs far less, but in its effort to be the ultimate off roader means it is compromised in other areas.

We had a 2004 Land Rover Range Rover for 13 yrs till 275000 km and repairs where less than a third of my Ford F250 which we ran for 10 years 150000 km . Rebuilt front end twice, shocks twice on Ford, replace transmission in both, replaced 460 engine in Ford once( stuck 700 miles from home). Ford was loose and rattled, Rusted and paint chipped easy. Window motors failed and so on. RR replaced two air bags $250 each and cooling system parts, never had to replace brake rotors just pads. All together Ford was broken or under repair for month. Catalytic converter on Ford fell apart internally and plugged exhaust, we got stuck in bush, $600 tow bill.
