In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
- 300 Blackout Federal PowerShok 150gr Pointed Soft Points
- Ruger American Ranch chambered in 300 Blackout with a 16 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Seems like that bullet is right at the knife edge of working properly, sometimes it does and sometimes...not so much. I think Federal would do better to drop down to the 125-130 grain class at 2150 fps for the .300 BO.

The only reason it's 150 grains is because manufacturers like to put .308 bullets designed to be going 2800 fps in them because it's cheap.

I think Barnes vortx makes a 125 & 135g copper for this reason. It seems 150 is a slight bit too heavy unless you are using a long barrel 300 you may have better luck

Using traditional 308 Winchester bullets in the BO seems risky, at best, for anything but target work. I’d pick the subsonic 190 grain hornady over this 150 grain I think.

I just ranged my 300 AAC Diamondback Winchester 150 grain XP, Barnes 125 grain OTM, and Barnes 110 grain TAC-TX and was impressed with the Barnes 125 grain accuracy! The other 2 were inconsistent in grouping at 100 yards. Thank you for testing these Federals! May test before open deer season.

I bought several boxes of these in 120 grain solid copper, about 5 years ago when prices were normal. I haven’t fired a single one yet. Tossed me into an ammo van and put in the closet. While getting ready for deer season I pulled out all my ammo cans and found these that I forgot about and decided to look up any testing on them. This is the only good video covering them.

Barnes is obviously the established king of 300 blk loadings. More interestingly though I have yet to see a video of Sierra 115 gr HP loading in 300 blk.

I bought a 300 Blackout upper for my AR, I choose the Federal Fusion 150 gr bonded soft point. I don't recall where I saw the ballistics testing, but it was obvious this stuff should be fine for deer at less than 100 yds. Hopefully the rifle likes this cartridge, I have not yet sighted it in. Thanks for the testing, yet another round if it doesn't like these.👍

Saw one of these cute little carbines today in . 300 Blackout. Got really curios about the numbers it delivers. Very much M1 . 30 carbine for speed with 40 more grains of bullet. Given the speed numbers, maybe 150 grains is a smidgen heavy for the cartridge. 125s and 130s may be a better balance point. I certainly need to study up on this cartridge and how it ranks with 7.62x39 in best deer loads for both.

That sure looks like the same bonded bullet as the fusion/ gold dot. You can see the lead is stuck to each petal. Federal uses the fusion/ gold dot bullet in a few of the powershock loads, such as 6.5 cm.

I do appreciate the effort you put into the videos and tests. Your tables seem to have enough warping to them to sag the gel blocks. Do you have a method to clean and re-melt the gel? Another channel I've watched a long time also uses gel and found a way to clear it out really well, have it crystal clear for each session. The stuff is expensive, so I assume it's worthwhile maintaining the clarity.
@masonleather
@masonleather 10 ай бұрын
The blocks sagging a little has no effect that matters that I can tell, the gel doesn’t have fibers that bend that the cause the bullets to do anything different. I’m not worried about if they’re crystal clear or not, they still work the same and that’d be one more task in a rather time intensive endeavor. They’re going to darken over time, most of my blocks have been melted and reformed approaching their expected lifespan of 10 ish uses. I’m doing this on as industrial a scale as possible for one person, there will be trade-offs, clarity is definitely one I’m willing to let slide. I filmed 14 more videos today alone, with another 50+ over the next few days.

@@masonleather Makes sense. Thanks for the response. I only mentioned the tables as a former video had the impacts zipping out the block tops.

300 Blackout was optimized for subsonics. If it is hunting that you want to do then a 300 HAM'R conversion barrel for that rifle is available from Wilson Combat for $250. Velocities for a 150 grain bullet from a 16" barrel would be closer to 2200.

@@masonleather I have a friend who was going to buy a single shot 300 blackout to run subs out of it with a suppressor. Quite yes! I made the point if you are going to run a single shot with subsonic rounds make it a 45/70 with 500-550gr pills so atleast you have lots of energy within 100 yards. Maybe put a 45/70 up against a 300 blackout running subsonic ammunition. It would be nice to see what they do at 50 and 100 yards. Maybe a .22lr sub, 5.56 sub, 300 blackout sub, 38 special sub and a 45/70 sub at distance.
