DEF CON 31 - An Audacious Plan to Halt the Internet's Enshittification - Cory Doctorow

The enshittification of the internet follows a predictable trajectory: first, platforms are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.
It doesn't have to be this way. Enshittification occurs when companies gobble each other up in an orgy of mergers and acquisitions, reducing the internet to "five giant websites filled with screenshots of text from the other four" (credit to Tom Eastman!), which lets them endlessly tweak their back-ends to continue to shift value from users and business-customers to themselves. The government gets in on the act by banning tweaking by users - reverse-engineering, scraping, bots and other user-side self-help measures - leaving users helpless before the march of enshittification.
We don't have to accept this! Disenshittifying the internet will require antitrust, limits on corporate tweaking - through privacy laws and other protections - and aggressive self-help measures from alternative app stores to ad blockers and beyond!

We should have paid more attention when Google dropped its "Don't be evil" motto.

Google was evil long before it dropped the motto. They treated the motto like "don't be a moustache-twirling evil villain" and that meant anything short of kicking puppies was perfectly okay.

This is an excellent presentation. People should watch it. Lots of facts that I wasn't even aware of, much less being able to put them together and see this direction. He's right despite my misgivings at the outset. I've never used Facebook but I'm surprised and even shocked at their operational business model. Glad I never signed up. But I am a big Amazon customer. Lots of comments here have been deleted.

I don't know if it is a coincidence or a logical consequence but it seems as if at some point a platform's "new user" experience becomes utter garbage. This is strange considering the emphasis big tech places on growth, I can't believe they actually plan for stagnation and decay.

Milton Friedman fucked up when he designed the income tax system to make it more palatable, instead of convincing higher ups to go for the georgist property tax he believed in. It would be great for the economy efficiency, environment and technological landscape if economic players were incentivized just to hold as many properties as they need... and with this tax companies would probably not have incentives to enshitify the internet.

Incredible talk and I agree with most of it aside from the faith in government to repeal those laws. "Just Vote" or "lobby your reps" doesn't work :(

Pretty sure no where in the entire video did he say either of those things. Pretty he sure he said that shit takes too long and there are better ways. Had you finished the content.

@@jeffbrownstain I think, even if that shit takes too long, it's still something that should be targeted. Just because it takes time to remove a bad law, doesn't mean you shouldn't act in the short term to offset its damage *_and_* in the long term to repeal the law.

First part was a passionate and entertaining critique on the state of Web 2.0 and how we got to this point and what it means for the future. Second part of the talk was briefly covering solutions to undo these things and how to ensure the future of the internet is better for it. Pretty good talk.

Right diagnosis, wrong prescription. The market will naturally discard the enshittified platforms, as it has repeatedly throughout history.
@oasntet
@oasntet 7 ай бұрын
How? If the market is owned by five companies that have already been found to form trusts, the market is already not free. When any new contender pops up, one of the five companies will buy it, bury it, or both. It doesn't matter if Facebook finally goes under when the boomers finish dying off, they already own Instagram and are already trying to Embrace, Extend and Extinguish the FOSS contender that it can't buy. Anti-trust is the right prescription.
