A program that each week Lynn Redgrave talked to a celebrity about a serious illness they have suffered.

Rick Allen saved my life as a young man I lost a leg in a motorcycle accident I was so depressed thought my life was over tried to end it all then I saw this amazing drummer who lost an arm he inspired me to kick myself in the ass pick up and press on today I play bagpipes in a military honor guard unit thank you mr Allen I know I'm not the only one you have inspired over the years

Made it to the big time. Now with one arm. Kind of tells you about will power and the wanting of doing what you can do if you make up your mind, you can do anything. Everybody complains about things in their life, it's easy to say I can't and another to say I'll try. We have no reason to give excuses and another to push and push in your mind to make things for self worth the effort.

Dont mean to sound negative , but Rick actually didn't record any drums except for the ones on the animal demo. Everything else was either pre recorded drum recordings or drums from a drum machine

It was tracked using an Oberheim drum machine because they all lived in a very small house, but then they moved to the studio to do it properly, he initially used his Ludwig kit but then after his accident, they re-did all the drum tracks with a custom made kit made by a Sheffield guy by the name of Pete Hartley

Can you imagine how he must've felt losing his arm? Nevermind that he played in one of the best bands of the 80's and was considered the God of drums. We're talking about losing a basic appendage. Seems like a genuinely great guy and am so glad that he worked it out with his drum kit (and plenty of blood, sweat, and tears!). You rock, sir!

I was born in '83 and didn't watch cartoons, but MTV (one perk of having somewhat absentee parents who didn't give a shit). Def Leppard was/is one of my favorite bands, and as a kid I remember being so incredibly fascinated by Rick Allen and the fact he only had one arm yet was a rock star and drummer. What a humble, soft-spoken, incredible man.

Right? At the peak of them really breaking thru they stuck by him & waited for his return. I was about 13 when this happened & hadn't been into much rock music. I saw their story & his miracle return & have been an insane fan all these years! I see them every year I'm able to & tear up each time he plays. I have so much repect for them all. If you want to get a lump in your throat watch as he returns after 23 years to Donington (sure I spelled it wrong).

+itkojecockot Nice to meet another die hard fan! I like tons of styles of music but they grabbed my heart when I was 13 & that spot is always there. Rarely do you get an album and like 99% of the tracks. My 8th grade boy friend gave me his Def Leppard guitar pin. I think I liked that more than him lol

Rick is truly an inspiration! He battled and came back....he never gave up! Even with one arm, Rick is the absolute best drummer or any band, past, present or future!! He is one of the reasons Def Leppard is the greatest rock band of all time!! God Bless You Rick!! You are the greatest!!!

I think I may quote you on this. I'm an ASK interpreter for the Deaf and daily have too explain to people they can and will do anything I can but hear. I've argued with Doctors ego tell them they can't d drive a care. I even interpreted a motorcycle training class & ride proudly with them!

My life today is so much better, but i do have reminders of what it was like. It wasn't that east to sleep, it would dislocate while sleeping. I am so grateful for skilled and really talented surgeons that decided to enter my life and say "yeah, we can fix this problem for this guy"

Rick Allen is my hearo as well. I have been living with CP all of my life. I look at what Rick went through and I have always said to myself. If Rick can go through this and still come back and play. Then there should be no reason why I can't persue my dreams of music.

Really Like To Meet This Amazing Drummer. Rick Allen Has Amazing Skill To Play With One Arm. I Have Had Injuries To My Face, But Nothing Ever Stopped Me Like Rick Losing His Arm Never Stopped Him From Playing Drums. The Car Rick Was Driving Was A 1984 Chevrolet Corvette, & Didn't Executive How Fast He Was Going, I'm Glad, The Way The Car Was Traveling On The A57, He Didn't Die That Day. Rick Continue The Drumming. You Are Absolutely Amazingly Talented.

Funny how his story has changed now. In a more recent interview he said he was pissed off at another driver who wouldn't let him pass, so he gunned it and lost control. Road rage! Seat belt slices arm off, he flies through the sunroof and lands in a field. In 1992 he still had to protect his reputation though.

It hasn’t changed, I have a book, Animal Instinct, and it has the story of an Alfa Romeo constantly trying to cut him off, then slowing, cutting him off again, and slowing, so Rick got frustrated and yes, in his anger, he floored it.
