Red Hat Films is proud to unveil this documentary looking at the past, present, and future of Red Hat and the evolution of open source.
Take a look back at the beginnings of open source, and its growth through the 80s and 90s. Meet the people involved, and understand how Red Hat got started, went public, and changed the technology industry along the way.
Experience this story from some of the people that helped craft it, including DeLisa Alexander, Jeremy Allison, Paul Cormier, Alan Cox, John Halamka, Venky Hariharan, Lawrence Lessig, Alex Pinchev, Brian Stevens, Michael Tiemann, Mark Webbink, Jim Whitehurst, Jan Wildeboer, and Bob Young.
See what the early days were like, and what they think the future might hold for open technology and the software business.

Pity things went closed source, isn't it? "Open source as a culture really permeates everything we do here at Redhat."

First of all I would like to complement all of the people who made this great film available. I would just like to point out something that is pretty well know, which is that RMS fully supports Free Software (Free as in 'Speach') and does not do the same for Open Source Software. I think that the wording used at the beginning of the film that may lead to have a wrong idea about this. Once again many thanks for making this great documentary available to all of us. Regards

One of the problem(kind of) with RedHat is , they focused on the enterprise market(servers). they discontinued redhat for the desktop , leaving redhat fans with one option, the buggy ,redhat's-testing-ground fedora. Debian is slightly better. one of the reason fedora/centos is preferred is that people can practice for RedHat exams, because its dominant in the enterprise.

Desktops are not discontinued for Red Hat operating systems.. Many very large organizations rely on RHEL desktop integration and customization. Think government agencies and production companies.

RHEL stands for redhat _enterprise_ linux , so average desktop user is out of options if I am correct.

This came up on autoplay as I sat in my recliner. Interesting. Dabbled in Red Hat a bit in the early 2000s. This vid seems like a time life book memory away with the death of the desktop.

2 years and nobody answered this? Maybe because you didn't make a working timestamp. Better late than never. He said "if we didn't do RHEL". RHEL= Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

I'm watching this video in honor of ibm killing off rhel. I was forced redhat and solaris while at ncsu. Crazy how only freebsd is still here only. At ncsu we had access to all the unices and IBM DB2, SAS, and all the big time stuff. I can't believe Big Blue won by killing off competitors like rhel. Sad day.

Reeeeeal pity that, like Google being unable to live up to "do no evil", RedHat couldn't live up to "our code is open." Because it isn't, any more. CentOS Stream, and greed, ensured this.
