In this video we repair the chassis of the Defender 110. We cut out the rotten areas of the top rail and replace with new metal. We also completely remove the rear cross-member (x-member) and legs and replace with a new quarter chassis from Paddock Spares. This is a real how to video of a Defender 110 chassis repair and replacement. Do watch to the end if you need to do the same.

Absolutely! It was such a relief as I really didn’t want to buy a new one...think we may have to bite the bullet on the bulkhead though...have you guys ever bought any aftermarket bulkheads?

Thats the first one youve done Ill bet ,,, Ive done dozens od them , very surprised to see a tig out , very easy job with a mig , only thing I would say is next time angle the rear chassis replacement ends to a 20 or 30 degree angle , and opposite angles on opposite sides like chassis builders to , the whole joint turns into a W wrapped round the joint and does away with any chances of future issues . All in all a tidy job.

Thanks for getting involved! 🙏 we ended up with tig as it’s what we have but there have been a couple of comments about using MIG. One day we will have both 😉 Interesting about the angle, if you have a picture of one that your doing send it over to our Instagram! Am interested in seeing what you mean.

Hi what thickness of plate did you weld into the top of the chassis? Great work🙂👍
@BUST2BUILT

Sorry for missing this comment for so long. We used either 2mm or 2.5mm plate and welded two together so the total thickness of the repair is either 4 or 5mm

@@BUST2BUILT That’s ok, I’ve got to weld a piece in the side of my chassis on my defender 90, I just wondered how thick. I think I’m going to go for two pieces of 2mm, I think that should be sufficient. Thanks for getting back🙂👍

@@Menditman2014 when we cut open the chassis it was 3 pieces of 2mm so 6 in total. But we thought for stress purposes that less would be best as a replacement

Now I understand why pro shops just make the customer pay 5k for a new frame. If you had to pay shop rates for that repair you would go broke.

@@mudpanther6079 ahhh nightmare, so are you having to cut infront of the rear suspension mounts? We definitely got lucky with it only being the rear crossmember so we didn’t have to muck about with anything to do with the axle mounting.

@@BUST2BUILT so with mine its previously had a rear crossmember that's in good condition, but basicly where them brackets are for the A frame crossmember the fuel pipes run over the top must of had a fiel leak in the past and that hole side of the cross member and top of chassis is rotten

are you really allowed to weld it yourself and then drive it on the road with only a short DIY experience in welding? I'm so surprised - no judgement - just surprised?
@BUST2BUILT
@BUST2BUILT 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question this! Thank you for getting involved. The short answer is yes. However let’s discuss a different scenario. is an un-trained person allowed to change brake discs, pads and callipers? Yes, should he? 🤷‍♂️ Ultimately it comes down to if the person who carried out the job is happy that it is safe and that the job was completed to a good standard and the vehicle passes any required testing (MOT for the uk) then great. If the person is not sure then it is wise to take it to a professional to look at it. In this case we are happy that it is strong and straight. Not a lot more too it with this part of the vehicle.

The only advise I would give you on the welding is to remove all paint and only attempt to weld clean bare metal. I presume the paint you applied was some kind of weld through primer ?? I was a coded welder many year's ago on a certain job and the metal had to be scrupulously clean even to the point of degreasing to achieve the best weld. Keep practicing.
@BUST2BUILT
@BUST2BUILT 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks m p. The chassis itself had been sandblasted and yes you’re correct it was weld through primer. We ground the areas of the replacement panel that was going to be welded and used panel wipe on all the surfaces before hand, so we hope it was clean.

Does landrover defenders have catalytic converters? ?
@BUST2BUILT

It depends on which engine/year the defender is. First model year to have it were the 2001 TD5 I believe and this is a 2004 TD5 so yes it does.

Yet another video showing you how to fit a rear crossmember badly. A bodge fitting, wouldn’t have you do any welding to my vehicle and yes I restore cars so I can weld spray and do bodywork.

ROBERT HAWKINS Hi Robert, We by no means are professional restorers, nor do we claim to be. We are a couple of guys restoring vehicles for fun in our free time to the best of our abilities with the tools we have. We have no formal training, but love cars and mucking about with them. We are however confident that whilst the welds may not look pretty, they won’t be going anywhere ever. What aspect of the work do you believe to be a bodge? We would be keen to hear constructive criticism and advice from anyone who is an expert in these areas. We would also love to see some of your work, do you have a KZfaq channel showing off your talents?
@roberthawkins4471
@roberthawkins4471 4 жыл бұрын
BUST2BUILT No sorry I don’t have a you tube channel, do take photos so I’m happy to share them. I would say cutting the chassis straight off and then lap welding the replacement on is a bodge in my view, typically of what you get when it comes down to time and money in a shop buts it’s far better to stagger the joins when it’s just your time.
@BUST2BUILT
@BUST2BUILT 4 жыл бұрын
ROBERT HAWKINS thanks for the tip. Good to know for the future should we need to weld any other chassis’. The replacement part is designed to lap, it may not be the best approach for absolute strength, but is probably to ensure people of all competencies can undertake the job. Fortunately at the rear we won’t have any weight bearing down on the joints so we think it should be safe. It is a good point though and hopefully our viewers about to embark on the same task take note as staggering the joint could help offset the stress risers. It is rearward direction pulling force we are most concerned with as this will be a tow vehicle predominately, so if the back does rip off, we will let you all know 👍🏻
