I’m sure it’s been mention but recommendation is to put it closest to the actual deadbolt as feasible because the deadbolt is what helps assist in ripping through the trim of your door and that’s where the momentum is focused... where you have it will certainly work, but because where the force will be applied is the deadbolt area it is better to get the latch lock in that general area. Props for installing and having something man! Also reinforce your trim on the deadbolt side with 3 or 3-1/2 deck screws every 12” or so this adds another could hundred pounds of force to your secure door

@Lewisusa112 жыл бұрын
@@johnnieboy66 The bolt of the deadbolt goes into a plate on the jamb and the inner trim (and outter) around the door helps attach the door to the door frame, usually just pin nails through the trim into the door jamb and finish nails through the trim into the framing. This is the area to reinforce a foot above and a foot below with lots of finish nails or screws. Real wood trim is better than MDF. the idea is to make the area that is going to receive the most blunt trauma is the deadbolt and what is holding it to the door and in the door frame stronger. This is why safes have multiple bolts. And remember, it's EXTREMELY hard to kick in a door that opens out. Sadly most residential exterior doors open inward. Change this and it really helps prevent kick-ins.
@teres39932 жыл бұрын

@evaiswg2 жыл бұрын
@@teres3993 Your deadbolt bolt sits into the door frame, then trim goes on top of that. When a dead bolt door gets kicked in the deadbolt rips through the frame and then pushes off the door trim. A lot of times the door trim comes off the wall and frame in one long piece. You put long screws through the door trim into the frame from the inside. It will reinforce the trim some but will look like hell unless you're good with wood working and cover the screw heads.

First of all, I would never have glass doors. Also, your door frame and its strength are important. Last but not least, the length of the screws in your door hinges matters a lot. This would be a great thing to have because most criminals are amateurs and will check the nob, kick the door once or twice and move on to someone else who left their window unlocked. But there are professionals out there who would make quick work of this. I’d invest in a security system as well as motion lights or those ring doorbells along with this device.

I added these to my home after my front door was kicked in at 1:30 in afternoon while I was home. I didn't have time to get to a gun, I just got between the 3 grown men and my girlfriend. They were shocked anyone was home and ran. If you haven't done anything to modify your front door there is a 2 inch strip of wood secured by 1/2 inch screws. Your deadbolt is worthless, most high school kids can kick that open. A standard deadbolt only takes 100-200lbs of force. The average man can generate 1,000lbs of force with a kick. Each one of these devices you add to the door adds 800 pounds of pressure. Changing your strike plate screws from 1/2 inch to 3 1/2 inches will secure them to the 2x4 in the door frame. Making these simple changes gives your door a minimum of 2,000lbs of pressure. If you think you will get to a gun before you are overtaken you are mistaken. This simple affordable product can save lives.

But if it takes 15 seconds longer for someone to get in, that’s well worth the money. Thanks for the time take. To show us this!
@bbrown58873 жыл бұрын
Door frames are often very weak as most are constructed of not more than an inch of softwood. The key to that devices effectiveness is high quality screws that are extra long, 3 or more inches, that penetrate well into the wall studs. This increases its integrity dramatically, as well as deadbolt strike plates if you install similar length screws there too. Your security weakpoint now is the glass window in the door. Breaking it causes noise so that can be a deterrent but not often. To address the glass vulnerability there are some very effective security films/laminates. Just be sure to install them right up to the window edge or the whole pain will just break out around the exposed edges. A few upgrades go a very long way to deterring lazy useless goofs.

As soon as I saw this video I knew there would be people commenting on how you can get around it. There are always ways to get around anything but what you do is you make it more difficult for the criminals. Not all burglars would break the window and they might might not know how the lock works. (Or you could simply use it on the door without a window)if you were at home it would buy you time to get other “defensive” measures in place. $10 is cheap it certainly would slow down people andGreatly prevent kick attacks.

I completely agree. Not any one thing is going to stop everyone, and if someone is determined enough they will get around it. But if you have multiple layers and make it exponentially more difficult then your house will likely never be chose and/or they will give up.

Pro tip if you're want even greater security buy some #10, #12, or #14 screws that at least 3 inch. So now instead of relying on the door jamb to stop the door, you're relying on the actual door frame.
@deankay44343 жыл бұрын
Per drill the holes before installing the 3-3 1/2” screws. If you install one above and below, it will be much much better from a physical attack from outside. One problem most will have, is the doors frame or jamb has a gap behind it. If you use a nice wide pry bar wrap it in masking tape or wide (Tall when vertical) metal butter knife wrapped again in masking tape or towel to prevent paint or drywall damage. Either way, you are trying to remove the trim or casing from that side of the door where latch and dead bolt are located. In construction terms, drywall stops short of the door jamb or frame (Same Part). But you will see a jack stud that goes close to the door case, but not touching it. This is the rough opening used to order a pre-hung door for example. This gap behind this device may pull in as you tighten the screws. Normally,,Zulu would take two shims sold in plastic or wood. Place the thick end into the opening where this device goes. Second shim is slid it thin side first to create an adjustable wedge to fill this gap, some gaps are thinner or wider. But fitting snug, close the door and check the gap to ensure it is even, top to bottom. If good, drill hoses smaller than screws and long screws between 3” - 3 1/2” or our longer, require a “TORX” bit like “T25”. These are brass colored mostly, but touch up with white oil paint from hobby store. Latex is fine and organized people keep marked in a cool storage space, but latex is water-based and after a few years, may show rust. My true fix is plate steel that is the thickness of the gap. Buy & cut 4” longer from top lock down 4” below bottom door latch (Knob or Handle). Buy or cut the depth of the gap of the jamb or casing. Hold in place with wedge or flat screwdriver. Mark opening thru dead bolt hole, then knob latch, drill the four corners and use a jigsaw or coping saw fitted with metal blade. With door stop pried off and removed, drill hole within its width to hide 4 screws, stop once thru metal plate. Pre-drill smaller holes for 3 1/2” - 4” - 4 1/2” inch construction screws, then tighten. The dead bolt and latch (Tapered Part) creates the ultimate backing plate to latches that hold these from being kicked in. It takes work but creates genuine confidence a lot of noise and sore legs and give up & run away. The noise alone will give you time to wake up, take action while spouse dials 911, while your “Louisville Slugger” at hand. Food for thought. As a retired ASE Master Tech since 1978, I fabricate and design parts or products I use at my house, as it started with a metal door I installed in the back kitchen door. I rebuilt the sill below the door once out. I was shocked to see my 1980 house I bought in 1993 from the original owner. The sill plate was naked. I cut out and installed PT wood and water/ice shield heavy rubber sticky on one wide and created an angle for water to run out. Sealing each hole with butyl tape and around the brick molding before installing the door. My expensive screen door shocked me when it had bare wood in the back. I put two heavy coats of oil based sealer on back, then two coats of color exterior latex paint over thin spray paint coat. Just picky but who wants to do it again in 12 years? Not me!

I sent a set back because the instructions said to just squeeze and open but didn't mention the pulling motion. I was getting so frustrated. Yours is the first video I've found that demonstrated the steps so well. Thanks.

Some of the comments are a trip. Burglars usually case a place to determine patterns of the occupants, if they have dogs and all these things. I have a German Shephard but he's more like Lassie. He wants to meet everyone but I need to test him just so I know what he'll do. My part of the street is very dark. I had someone start prying into my side door and left plenty of evidence. My Dobie was on the other side of that door and he sat there, trained not to bark..On the window I could see his lip prints as if he were peeking in. The pollen from the tree stuck to his greasy lip prints. I've been barricading the side door but am always cautius when I go down there. I like this device. It looks simple to install and easy and reliable to use..

I don't understand why people don't just read the comments section before they comment on the same thing someone else posted. I'm actually diggin these locks. I wonder if they have a version that allows you to lock it when you leave the house. Thank you for the review and I will look into these soon. Nice collection. I wish I collected cars like that but my kids would take them down and try to play with them. I still have a set I used to play with as a little boy. But that was like 5 years ago..... Hahaha. Kidding. I would play with those cars all day with my younger brother back in the days. Now it's all about tablets and TV. Trying to get outside. But Covid19 got us locked down. Anyways thank you. And wish you and your family well.

You typically want pressure locks like these where the foot would go when kicking. Some go up to 800 pounds of pressure which gives you more time because obviously you'll hear the added kicks. If you're looking for the bottom reinforcement, I forgot exactly what they're called (maybe nightlock?) That's something you slide into the floor in front of the door at night, and just slide out of the way in the morning.

Heads up: Untill it UNDER the locks (with 3" screws) I made the same mistake (on two doors) but redid them after watching how doors are kicked in. It's always from people turning around and horse kicking the very bottom of the door or straight on at the middle of the door. It's never someone raming their shoulder at the top of the door. Think about it, putting it lower stops the kick at the latch so you're not wedging the bottom of the door like a crow bar bending it inward until the handle lock breaks.

Though it is a danger that exists, I'm much more concerned of someone breaking into my door while I'm out than when I'm at home. However, I do have some external doors that I pretty much never use to enter the house upon returning home, so these would be of perfect use on those.

Super super super high security. Nice looking little thing. Just wondering how can it really prevent if somebody wants to kick the door in? The preventing part against the door is very tiny. Here in Finland we always are wondering why your doors open inwards and not outwards? Our doors MUST open outwards because of fire regulations. When we have to go fast out, the door opens to the right direction. This has saved a lot of people. And the door is impossible to kick in. Well, sure it can be done but then the door must be smashed.
@thesanfranciscoseahorse4732 жыл бұрын
What happens of debris is blocking the outside of an outward opening door? In places that get lots of snowfall I'd think people with outward opening doors could be trapped against the snow.
@moetocafe2 жыл бұрын
To further improve the door against brute force attack, it is best to install the door in a way, that it opens on the outside, not in the inside. This way - hammering or kicking the door inside - won't be of any use. And it's harder to break a door, that needs to be pulled, than pushed.

When a door is kicked in usually nobody’s home therefore the door that is kicked in is usually the main entrance door. This device does not work when it’s the door that you exit from. second when a door is kicked in usually the door frame is also broken therefore if ?? this device does not have screws long enough approximately 3 inches to 4 1/2 inches long to reach the wooden studs of the structure of the home then this device would be defeated during a kick in. But it’s nice but really should be installed lower below the Handel to counter the impact of the foot or ramming object at the proper height of impact.

This is an amazing gadget. It won't stop your door from being kicked in but it will make it to where they have to kick in your door and then you would hear it vs them just picking your lock.

This looks sound compared to other locks. If you screw 3" screws into the studs, that is a lot better than other locks on the market that just fit inside the bolt hole which is generally a 1/2" piece of wood trim.

I like to think about how to protect myself from intruders with locks and stuff but I also like to consider how to escape the house during a fire and this lock is hard to get open and thus bad in a fire situation.
@theplinkerslodge63613 жыл бұрын
That was immediately obvious to me. I learned about the fire hazard when I went to buy a vacation rental home on the water, and the egress from the upper unit was down a stairway to a door that opened INWARD. A whole bunch of people escaping a fire would have ended in disaster. Not to hard to reverse the action of the door, just takes $$$.

You should never install that near the handle. That is the weakest part of the frame. Thats always the first spot to fail when you kick in a door.
@eyeswideopen22844 жыл бұрын
I recommend you remove that thing and put it much lower. Either in the middle near the handle or just below the handle. If someone is kicking the door in, they are NOT kicking up high. They are kicking middle on down. Most will turn with their backs to the door and will then do mile kicks. If I wanted into that door (of course ignoring it has glass), I’d mule kick the bottom and it’ll then break inwards at the bottom. 💡 Now fix that my friend.

For everyone who doesn't already know the door jam is weak as he'll and will break super easy with a half-assed kick from. Just about anyone that's why this comes with 3 inch screws. That way you screw threw the jam and into the stud that the jam is attached that's where u get your strength from, it's also recommended to replace your hinge screws with 3 inch screws so that they 2 will hit the stud and not just the jam
