This series will cover the essentials of Defensive BFM that you need to survive a dogfight in DCS World. The aim of this video is to show you the options you have, depending on the Bandit’s TC entry, to force decisions between a shot or good follow-on; to prolong the fight; and to neutralise or escape.
Chapters
0:00 Intro and caveats
1:00 Aim of the video
1:49 Early entry counters
3:17 High Yoyo counters
3:57 Late entry counters
4:27 Low Yoyo counters
4:56 Misalignment counter
5:44 Conclusion
By the end of this video, you should have a basic understanding of:
- How to respond to Bandit initial TC entry.
- How the Bandit will appear in various follow-on BFM and how these relate to geometry.
- How to respond to Bandit position and manoeuvre.
I'm not a fighter pilot. While these videos are based on real tactics, they are for context only and are only relevant in a game environment. This is based on my own understanding and is not professionally authoritative. Accordingly, the tenets in this video are the ones I apply, and not some official law that fighter pilots live by.

As always, I hope you enjoy it. Please like a subscribe if you feel I have helped you better understand the topic, and I'll see you again soon.

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP The series is great I think and I certainly gained a lot of knowledge. I'm still relatively new to DCS in general and I just started with BFM but the series really helped me to get started and understand what I should try to do and what I need to pay attention to. Also the topics are very nice explained so it's easy to understand and the videos are not bloated with unnecessary information or anything like that. Many thanks

Thanks Tobias, feedback like his helps us dial in on things we can do more of, in an effort to educate rather than entertain. A lot of people start with BFM, but there's so much more to Air Warfare, hopefully BFM is the 'gateway drug'! ~Tyro

Hi James, I'm going to try to get the DBFM series finished off in March and then move into HABFM in April, but we are now getting into a very busy time of year for me and I have some things coming up this year which mean I will have to focus a lot on my day job - that said I'm hoping to join up with someone else who understands this stuff sufficiently that the videos can keep coming. ~Tyro

What do you mean by “assessing if the bandit has vertical performance” I have watched all the previous videos. But does that mean if the bandit is performing a high yo yo or does it mean assessing the bandits ability to perform the high yo yo. Lastly. Can you provide us a list of the best turn rate “bands” for the popular aircraft in DCS? thanks! Love this series!
@AIRWARFAREGROUP
@AIRWARFAREGROUP Жыл бұрын
Hi Marrero, assessing the Bandit’s vertical performance just means, how far into the vertical do you think they can manoeuvre their nose. Ie if they are 10 deg nose down with a lot of bank at high alpha and low speed, they might struggle to get the nose very far up and will almost certainly not be able to get into the pure vertical. Secondly, I can’t I’m afraid because I don’t have the time to gather that kind of data experimentally and a patch update could render it pointless. You can use TacView to do your own experiments but the best way is just to fly the aircraft and gain experience.

Loving this series a lot learnt and a lot to put into practice, i have a question that you may be able to cover or perhaps you are planning this for another episode, how to deal with the aggressive player that in a guns only fight they go right in for the guns to your face no merge no pass no get into the fight turn just in your face aggressive guns. Fairly confident although you will know more than me that no RL fighter pilot would go in aggressive guns in the face due to the risk of sucking in wreckage from your opponent , my brain is going i know you want to but don't cause air intakes an jet engines suck bits in and jet engines don't like fragments of metal mixing in with the air it will be fatal. These type of players are found on the servers quite a bit and dealing with them i find difficult and don't really know how to deal with them. Once again thankyou for your efforts i know making content can be hard and long, but please keep up the fantastic work i really hope this channel takes off for you with more subs.

Hey Weasel, that's an expansive question. There's a saying by Medal of Honor recipient Cdr David McCampbell USN - "If you ever caught a fighter pilot in a defensive mood, you had him licked." This applies here. You are correct in that a gunshot will result in a shrapnel cloud, and in training there are strictly enforced (by NATO forces at least) training rules on no head-on simulated gunshots to avoid mid-air collisions. However, from a head-on pass there is a greater threat from the Bandit's own canon rounds. Giving them a burst of fire not only threatens them but will force them to manoeuvre if their nose is on. If you have advantageous geometry (i.e. you have been able to build and exploit turning room) then you should continue with that plan (arrive at the fight with an advantage). But you should always employ weapons if you can. For example, if you are committed to the merge from a radar attack, keep firing your Fox-3 or Fox-1 shots as you approach the merge, and then once you're in WEZ, employ Fox-2 if you can get a tone, after that follow your canon rounds into the merge. If you assume 'Queensberry rules', then you're handing your opponent a huge advantage.

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP Thank you that makes sense, and i suppose with what you have been explaining here in this series can be applied to the old warbirds to with the exception of missiles and flares obviously, i seem to have more luck in warbirds no fear of missile up the butt. Well thankyou again and looking forward to more episodes.

I have a question about countering a low yo-yo with a good/high energy state. I usually use this because, as a viperist, I fight as an energetic fighter, so, when the bandit (usually a hornet) gets my six with a good entry and/or a misaligned circles, he gets much slower than me and he does a low yo-yo. At this point, I go up vertically and always find myself slow on top far above, I descend on him and find myself head on, nose down with the bandit climbing towards me, in lead, shooting before/better than me and winning. I also tried to do a flat high speed turn to his high six, but the epilogue is always me in flaming wreckages. What is the desired follow on of the nose high maneuver?
@AIRWARFAREGROUP
@AIRWARFAREGROUP 2 жыл бұрын
It’s difficult to say without seeing a TacView replay, but going straight up against a high-alpha fighter before you have really burned their energy down is risky, as they can move the nose up easily. A less ‘all-in’ option might be to tighten down and deny the low yo-yo while building speed to rate around. Then is the Hornet pulls for lead again, you have a much better energy differential for a vertical mnvr. However as I say, very difficult to debrief specifics without a TacView. It’s likely that the situation isn’t the same every time.
@xagremnightyndale673
@xagremnightyndale673 2 жыл бұрын
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP agreed. Every situation is different and when something can work with a bandit, it cannot work another bandit on the same aircraft. Anyway, the hardest aircraft to face for a viper is the hornet. It outrates the viper easily and can turn its nose wherever the viper wants to turn around. Will you ever make any video for cases where different fighters face each other (energetic Vs nose authority, high Alpha Vs high speed, ecc)?

I’ve started producing some videos that debrief individual engagements but there’s no ‘set piece’ even for fighters that have different strengths and weaknesses. One size sadly doesn’t fit all when it comes to Air Combat!

These videos are very good, but if I had any criticism it'd be that sometimes the language you use is so efficient, the meaning can be lost unless we're really paying attention. Often you might say that some concept has already been described somewhere else (in this video or another one), but for training materials I think it's more helpful to err on the side of being too repetitive, than being concise. Be a tutor, not a textbook, and remember that this is all new to us and stuff needs time to sink in. Otherwise, these videos are amazing, and thankyou so much for making them.
