Great series Brian! So impressed with how much work that you put into it. The results should give everyone serious food for thought. Can't wait to see your next endeavor. In the mean time, we are fans of red dot optics as well, and are working on mounts for the lever action rifles. Stay tuned. Thanks so much for putting so much into this series. We enjoyed binging it this evening!!

I have two Marlin 1894's, one in .357/.38 and one in .44, both with 16" barrels. My neighbor's house is literally the other side of my one-lane driveway. For HD, I load them with two rounds of Special (.38 or .44) and the rest with Magnum (.357 or .44), so that the first two shots are the Specials. It gives you two relatively easy shot to get your point across, followed by the hammer, if you need it. I had looked at the Malin 336Y (16" .30-30), but the pistol caliber rifles were an easy choice for me. Plenty of power for close range, the 1894 receiver is shorter than the 336/1895 receiver, and I can load more rounds for the same barrel length. I'd rather have 8 or 9 rounds of .44 than 4 or 5 rounds of .30-30 for short range encounters.

I know there were limitations on ammo availability, but I’d love to see a head to head on the .357 with the same hollow point as the .44.

Great series. I think Henry makes a 44 magnum with a 16 inch barrel. This series has me interested in one, maybe with some stout 44 special, like buffalo bore. It would be cool to see the shorty 357 head to head against a 44 of the same length and with the same ammo. Thank you for all of your work!

Thank you! I'll have to check into that. They are both great calibers, but I do want to see that head to head as well so I will definitely be doing that comparison.

Damn man, you really did a great job on this extensive series! Thanks, and for me I think the .357 but trying out different ammo would be ideal. I also have to add RPP ROCKS!!!

I chose a Henry Big Boy X in 44 Mag for Home Defense Lever. It allows me to use softer shooting 44 Special, as well as lower load 44 Magnums, up to full strength JHP 44 mag.

i used to live in restrictive state and choose .357 mag, revolvers and marlin lever guns. the lever guns shoot soft enough even my wife could shoot them. we didnt have these fancy rails back then, but was able to get extended top rails for a red dot and light.

I would choose the .357 as this one is set up. I use the Holosun 507c because of the shake awake feature. This rifle would also be capable of taking small game up to deer if needed. I reload everything I shoot, so to me that would be an advantage also. My supply of lead for casting would go further, less powder, etc. This relates to more possible trigger time, which means a higher level of skill.

Looks like that was fun. My pick would be 357 or 3030. 357 because it matches the revolver caliber I’m most likely to carry so they can share ammo and 3030 because it is the lever action equivalent to the 7.62x39 or 300BO. The round has some reach and plenty of power. If you want to explore the idea further, check out the Henry Long Ranger in 223 or 308. Not traditional lever guns but the rounds aren’t traditional lever gun rounds either.

Nice series. I'd lean towards a .44 and loading with .44 Specials HP or the .38+P in the .357 rig. My older eyeballs, I'd opt for a light/laser combo with one pressure switch for both. Now, I'm more and more pleased with my Mossberg 590 Shockwave with the Crimson Trace laser and light, and with the rubber piece insert to run the .12 ga stubbies in it.

I love the RPP stuff, but their stock needs to increase. I've been waiting quite a while for parts from them for one rifle, with 3 or 4 more to do. Your series has been great and it's been very informative. I now have 5 levers with a couple more to get. It's been a great distraction from ARs! Keep it up, and Thank you!

Regarding the glass, you could drop a tarp under your set up as well. That might be easier than trying to take the glass out of the doors. Still will make clean up easier as well.

Mounting a pressure pad on either side is viable if you practice activating with fingers or thumb, depending on which hand is on the grip.....really not an issue. I used to put my pressure pad on the top rail, but had the same issue of my thumb taking up part of the view. Once I moved it to the side and practiced activating it with whatever digits I had on that side, it was smooth sailing. My lever action is a Henry chambered in .45 Colt. After a ton of research comparing the .45 Colt and the .44 Magnum I found that the modern .45 Colt actually outperforms the .44 magnum by a small amount. Is the difference enough to argue about? Not really, but the point is the modern .45 Colt is nowhere near the same as the old school .45 Colt. Since I simply LOVE the .45 in any iteration, it was an easy choice. And, I have some very HOT .45 Colt rounds I got from Buffalo Ammo and it hits like a truck! Maybe get your hands on a .45 Colt and compare it ballistically to the .44 Magnum? Would love to see if my research proved true or not since I can't convince my wife I need a lever action in both calibers.....

This series made me put my 30-30 Henry LeverX into frontline home duty. Always thought 30-30 would over penetrate, especially with the Leverevolutuion rounds, but clearly that's not the case.

Great videos on lever guns and I agree with almost everything you said. The only thing I disagree with you on is using a rifle for home defense. If I am going to use a long gun then a 12 ga, pump shot gun with a 18 inch barrel and 00 buckshot is my choice. My other choices are 9MM handgun and 357 revolver I have several staged around my house in different rooms and out of reach of any visiting children.

Nicely done, kudos! My choice is also 44 mag, but with specific requirements. 10 rounds in the magazine, 19~20" barrel. 1873 action slicked up for speed and reliability. Defending against target(s) not inside the house, but outside attempting arson, vandalism or other attacks.

I have a Rossi 92 16 inch in 357 I have been loving on. It is fast enough to out run my buddies with tricked out ar's and ak's. When I say I can beat them at what ever games we play by like 19 seconds. Butt it only holds 10 or 6 rounds. Butt for hunting, fast and lite is an under statement.

Loved the series. Your lever guns are far more gucci than what I went with. Mine are more old school and my “in home”option is a very classic 1873 Winchester with a 24 inch barrel in 357 Mag and a Marlin 336 in 30/30 Win topped by a Nikon Red Dot and XS Ghost ring sight. For outside on the ranch, I have a modern 1886 in 45/70 Deluxe. I know, kinda fancy but it sure puts the hurt on if needed. Just another note … the 1886 ain’t no lightweight. Eat your wheaties if you are going carry one of these girls in the field!

I just learned of your channel and just watched this series. Lots of good info. However, I'm wondering why 45LC was left out. You get a good bump in velocity with a 16"+ barrel and it packs a wallop.

Thanks for checking us out! Unfortunately, I don't own a 45LC. Also, this was shot during the main ammo shortage. It took us months just to get a little 44 mag. 45 was pretty much nonexistent then. I hope to revisit the series with some new cartridges and calibers though!

Very nice selection, my opinion would be the 44mag to be the best option ......but I prefer the 357 , for a well placed shot on deer or 🐻 bear, but if I were in Alaska or Yukon and concerned about a bear charge I would go for the 44mag , thank-you for the video.

i liked 30-30 performance. Still i would ideally go for 44 because it has more ammo capacity and is effective enough(understatement if there ever was one). Also I reload and 44 is easier to get brass, bullets for and less hassle to load as a straight walled cartridge. Will probably get a 44 some day, for now my choice is 357 as it is what i have - also cheaper to practice. And i can use most of my 9mm reloading setup to load 357 which makes the process fast.
