In this video I go through a few things related to the purchase of a new car by my business (it will become my company car). As much as I wanted to lease a car I simply couldn't get approval and you'll see how my business and personal finances played a huge part in my decision of whether to buy new or used and whether to get an EV or an ICE vehicle.
I hope some of you find this useful or interesting. If you're in a similar position I VERY STRONGLY recommend that you speak to your accountant before taking the plunge on anything using your company funds and fully understand all the various ramifications for yourself.
By the way, the VAT thing would not have been beneficial for me as the car will be for both business and personal use.
Hopefully I'll be able to lease the next one!

I picked up a new Tesla model 3 on interest free pcp with low deposit for less than a lease deal. Still have some tax advantages for my wife's business. All other choice of EV where more to pay per month than the deal I got. Happy now and the Tesla is cheaper to charge at their superchargers, up to half the price of other chargers. I am definitely not a typical EV owner, I but I like the ease of ownership, I don't mind the charging on long trips, currently on 867mils of a 1000 mils road trip. Energy used so far 4.45mils per kilowatt. Mostly motor way driving at 70 and air con blasting. I have been following your channel for a while now great content.

Nothing remotely hypocritical about your decision to buy a new car rather than leasing, or to plump for an EV. We all have to do what best suits our own situation. Nice one Jim. I feel your pain on the tax stuff. I was a self employed consultant for a while and trying to get your money out of the business is difficult. I am PAYE now so just get fleeced before it lands in my bank.

I don’t really understand the tax situation with business owners. One I know boasts he doesn’t pay any tax,employs his wife even though she doesn’t do any work etc. whereas I pay tax which supports education social services costs etc in this country. Go figure?

@@agiugabenson7268 Essentially yes what you describe was common practice. Although if you do quite well you will have to pay some tax! It is not so easy these days. People pay themselves a small salary to avoid income tax and NI then take the rest as dividends as they are taxed at a lower rate, and used to have a reasonable tax free amount. You still have Corporation tax to pay first from the profits. Obviously the rules are now under scrutiny and are changing to some extent. The best way to get money out of a company is by putting though as may expenses as possible and buying tax deductible assets such as phones, laptops and cars.

Like yourself Jim, my EV purchase was solely to save on my tax bill, it would be interesting to know what percentage of EV sales are by businesses. I would hazard a guess that’s it’s quite high. I'm not an owner of an EV car but have used the Company EV cars for the past 2 years... They are not for long journeys especially in winter... But in the current weather in the UK... Hot... They are fantastic even with the aircon on... One day might get a second hand one probably during the back end of winter when their prices tumble. Hopefully the press does it's job to discourage people from buying so the prices tumble even further

SOmethign I'd do on a call but not in a video - too many would take it as financial advice. Net cost of the car will be circa £29k.

Basically, If you have profit of under £50k your CT will be 19%. If you buy a new EV, you're saving 19% of it's cost. If you give a directors loan and pay it back in future years you're also going to be saving tax in those years. You will personally be on the hook for company car tax but all other things like tyres, servicing, insurance etc can go through the business. Speak to your accountant who will do you a proper breakdown.

@DefinitelyNotAGuru My accountant is very straightforward. Big fan of leasing and in my brain the numbers worked. But writing of a tax bill and lending your own company money... which it has to pay you back is.... either pretty smart or creative!! Either way, it's clearly within the rules and it has afforded you an interesting opportunity.... Good for you. As before looking forward to your next ... installment! Pun intended.

It’s probably something I’d only do on a call; I don’t really want to do a video as it’s showing it all as I’d hate someone to use it as tax planning advice - the answer is to speak to your accountant really. I may possibly do it with a huge caveat at the beginning but I probably won’t 👍

Interested to see what you've gone for EV-wise? Having been a past advocate of PCP and made some decent profit on my last car. My workplace has just signed up to a new leasing company and now I have a brand new Mercedes EQC. For the money was a no-brainer. Circumstances can change for us all and not sure you're the type of guy to give a hoot what others think of your choice. I reckon a new Tesla was your 1st option but was out of reach????

I'm certainly looking down this route (also in consulting for the insurance industry). The 100% year 1 writing down allowances, with the v low BIK rates, (and the VAT perspective), mean that you'd be nuts not to have this as a core element of your income strategy. One peculiarity though - I see no reason why you wouldn't go for a 2 year old BEV, as the BIK would still be trivial (it's based on new RRP). The initial depreciation on new BEVs is apparently eye-watering, so I'd expect you could get something super fancy and still be able to take full tax advantage. NB- this is definitely core "tax planning", not "tax avoidance". Your approach is clearly to apply tax law as it is intended. The sad thing is that employees cannot take similar advantage, unless their employers offer a BEV salary sacrifice purchase scheme, which most do not. And those that do, seem to use firms like Tusker who appear to be very expensive.

With a used EV you can only claim 18% per year so not as useful if you have a large amount of cash and tax liability to play with in a relatively short period of time, otherwise I would have bought used.

Great Video Jim. Fully understand your position, money talks when you run your own business👍 but an EV😢just please dont say it is a Tesla😭😭😭. Driven a few EV's and I find that they are soulless, numb things that don't deliver on the driving pleasure front. Once the novelty of the instant accelartion wears off there is not much left. Hope the business grows so you can get a weekend car that you can still have fun with. Me, I am going back to sporty ICE manual before they are banned forever. Good Luck Fella👍

Running your own business is tricky because you have to know the ins and outs of how to not get decimated by the terrible tax system which makes it a no brainer to not pay it! I know you are Mr lease but a lease will never make sense to me financially.

EV's only make sense for company car drivers. As you say they are too expensive for Joe public who don't get any tax incentives. But if it makes sense for the individual then why not.

They make perfect sense for a lot of folks on a personal lease; if you can charge at home your running costs are virtually nowt compared to petrol or diesel.

Hi Jim. If your Ltd company leased the car, would the deposit and the monthly payments not be a business expense? Ie tax deductible?

Yes they would (remember I can’t get a lease and that’s a long term play - I had a short term issue)

On the fence with Tesla, due to all the bad press from Elon Musk. Hyundai Ioniq 5 my wife loves or Ioniq 6 which is my chose...soon the Pug 408 in that deep red will be electric...very nice but not out yet...hope you get on with what ever you go for....

I've had a Polestar 2 for 3 years now - they are great cars ! The obvious choice if you want something other than the default Tesla route.
