Always nice to see content from Padmapriya. He has such a calming, soothing delivery. Regarding defoliation - I have two mame Sycamore that start each season with a handful of big leaves. Cutting them off always results in a second vigorous flush of tiny leaves which look more in scale with the tiny trees. 👍

A great video, I visited the nursery in May and after the very cold April one of my beautiful Maples (bought from Heron's last year, I love it) had suffered alot of frost damage. I think it was Tibor who talked me through this process and I'm happy to say that my tree is now in full leaf again and looking beautiful! Also when I visited I treated my self to a lovely Oak. Thanks so much, Peter, for all your illuminating teaching and encouragement for the rest of us. I especially appreciate your “Bonsai For Everyone” mission statement. Padmapriya's work is also very appreciated. I've recently acquired a number of self-sprouted seedlings around my home, and some of them are maples. How old should these trees be before I defoliate them? Also, if the leaf stem dies anyway, why is the leaf cut at the outermost stem point instead of closer to the node area? Again, thank you for your time and efforts. Your videos are quite relaxing, too.
@Dave_en
@Dave_en 2 жыл бұрын
Let the plant grow for atleast one year before experimenting on it. Before that the plants are very fragile. You can spray cold water and keep the plant in morning sunlight for an hour or two for vigorous growth. If your plant is healthy it will withstand pruning and defoliating. You can cut the rotting or dying part though

Great topic, great video Padmapriya....I was wondering, when is the best time to defoliate? Even though its early/almost mid summer here in the states, ( June 28th) My Tridents are still shooting small leaves, and all three trees have just went through their first real wiring. SO.. with the days around 32-35°, and them being wired about a few weeks ago, I am worried first, that this would be too much stress, and two, if its the right time. I always thought early to mid summer was the right time, but seeing that my trees may be stressed already, I might not try this this year. I haven't had the nerve to try this ever, so far.

As long as the leaves are removed - that's all that matters. By removing the leaves you are forcing the tree to regenerate leaves as they are the food factories for the tree. It needs leaves to survive.

Hey Padmapriya, I am not sure about the feeding part you mention at the end. If you feed the tree before the growth has hardened, in my experience, the only thing you get is longer internodes thus rendering part of the defoliation pointless. Could you please check that out? It must have been too late to do this process and none of the leaves came back that year. This year the tree is doing great. Maybe you can help me. I may have ruined my ficuses. They are around 50 years old ficus benjamina, inherited from my late father. I found them too large, so I trunk-chopped all three, two times. The first time 2 of them sprouted new branches, almost like a knotted willow. A year later I found them too large still, so I chopped them again last fall 2021. All chops were done under branches. I also root chopped them and placed them in less tall pots, more like a large bowl. I did that in spring 2021. Now it's summer '22 and still no branches. I've tried a few cuts on the bark early spring and nothing. I do have several strange little knobs on the trunk, almost like warts. Are those maybe the start of branches? Am I too impatient? Thank you.

Hi Peter and all staff. I have a question I hope you can help with as I know you are fond of picaea glauca. I have a picaea glauca daisy white that I have made into a bonsai about 4 weeks ago. I have noticed in the last few days some browning of the ends of the needles particularly around the crown. It has new growth and fresh buds, seems to be healthy otherwise. Is this due to sun scorching or possibly due to the vast amount of rain we have had in Kent in the past few weeks, perhaps it is overwatered??
